Schooling - Humboldt, South Dakota
The family lived in Humboldt, South Dakota when she was in 7th and 8th grade. It was a mile to this one-room school. This was the first time she had a male teacher, Mr. McCoy. The winter of her seventh grade was severe. A blizzard hit one afternoon and the students that came in that day could not get home. Wood was running low and they were wearing their coats when a few hours in to the storm a man walked in to the school covered in snow. It was her Dad who had tried to make it by car but could not. They had the children out on all the coats, scarves, boots and mittens they could find, tied each student to the next and began the quarter of a mile walk to the nearest farm. They could not see any further than the back of the person in front of them. It seemed like hours with her Dad walking up and down the row talking to the children and making sure they stayed bundled up. They found the farmers driveway by luck and the surprised lady let them all in, fed them and made beds on the floor for all of them. Loretta’s Dad would not let the lady give up her bed, as she was nine months pregnant.
She was one of only two 8th grade students.
Schooling - Fostoria/Spencer, Iowa
The family moved to Fostoria during the last few months of her first year and would later move to Spencer, Iowa. Each of these schools were one-room, with all eight grades in one room, no electricity or running water, and two outhouses, one for boys and one for girls. Each grade had their own time for each subject with the teacher, and the other grades did work problems or reading while the teacher held her classes.

Birth
A Dr. Kenny delivered Loretta on a farm on Sunday, October 18th, 1936 at 2:20 am in Curlew Iowa. She was 16 inches long but only 3 and 3/4 lbs. Her mother, Effie Ring, noted that she had to be kept in a baby buggy among hot water bottles and jars for a month. She was known as the neighborhood "curiosity" because she was so tiny. At 1 month old she had made it only to 5 lbs and 20lbs on her first birthday.
