Her Life
June 6, 2022
Lyn was born and grew up in Vandalia Ohio near Dayton. She graduated from Otterbein University and became a teacher. She taught in several different parts of the country including some time in Hawaii.
She spent some time out as a hippy in San Francisco before returning to teaching. She had some great stories from that time!
I met Lyn in 1986. I answered her personal ad in the local dollar saver paper in Newark California. We went on a couple of dates but then drifted apart. A year later, we connected again and began dating seriously.  From there we got married in 1988. Lyn became step mother to my sons Adam and Terry (although Terry was living on his own and not at home any more). Since Adam was living at home with us for several years, Lyn became very close with him and felt that he was the son she never had. She never thought of him as a step son, just a son.
We spent a lot of our weekends camping. Our favorite spot was Cassini Ranch on the Russian River near Jenner on the California coast. We often took our goddaughters Lizzy and Erika with us. They really enjoyed it and Lyn really enjoyed taking them. She also enjoyed taking our son Adam and his friends often.
One day Lyn saw a boat for sale and this started our boating period. We boated on San Francisco Bay and spent the weekends on the boat in the marina. Lyn loved it. She loved taking our friends out for a day on the bay every chance we could get. One great experience was taking the boat to San Francisco for the Senior Ball for the high school. We were chaperones so we dressed up on the boat and took a taxi to the hotel. After the ball, we came back and drank champagne on the boat in the moonlight. The next day we had to go back across the bay and it was really nasty out. We might have been the only boat on the bay that day but Lyn was fearless. She loved it! She was fearless on the water!
When her medical issues got worse, we had to give up the boat because it was too rough on the bay and she also had to retire from teaching. She hated giving up both.
We moved to Oregon and she tried to do some part time teaching at Western Oregon University where she taught teachers about special education. She also taught the occasional class at Chemeketa College but her medical condition got worse and she eventually had to quit. We still camped a lot and often took kids with us. Lyn still enjoyed doing things with children. She worked with some after school projects for students when she could. We hosted a Brazilian student and Lyn really enjoyed interfacing with her as well as the rest of the Brazilian students (they came as a group). We later hosted a student from Thailand whom we enjoyed very much. Lyn became very attached to her and hated to see her leave.
Eventually, I retired and we moved to Sequim Washington to be closer to Adam and his family. Lyn's medical condition got worse as time went by and she was unable to do those things she most wanted to do. She spent the last couple of years mostly house bound until her illness finally got the better of her. She never gave up though and always held out hope that she would get better.
