Red Chocolate Pie
My Grandma was a very unique woman and that also applied to her cooking skills. I don't remember my age (maybe around 10) but we spent time at Grandma Mabels as often as we could. I recall mentioning to Grandma Mabel that she should make a chocolate pie (secretly because I LOVE it!) and she was busy in the kitchen. All of a sudden, I heard my Dad ask her what on earth she put in that pie! He said, "It looks like I am doing heart surgery when I went to cut a piece of it."
She said so calmly, "I might have accidentally put that cough syrup or food coloring in it" with a BIG ole grin on her face. She really wasn't sure because they were so close to each other. You ask why? Nobody knows but that was one scary looking pie! It did make us all laugh a lot (including her) so I call it a great memory. It was never a surprise when Grandma Mabels cooking didn't turn out perfect but that isn't why we were there anyway. Our family time was all that mattered.
She pulled some doozies in the cooking department and I'm sure others have some good stories too. There will NEVER be another Grandma Mabel....
