I was deeply saddened by the tragic news of the demise of our brother, friend and colleague Dr. Maqbool Jafary. We all remember that the credit goes to him and few of his colleagues for establishing EMAME. I remember his zeal, dedication and friendly nature. Dr. Jafary’s great contributions to EMAME will always be remembered with honor and pride. He will be greatly missed by all.

Thanks for sending me the link of “Off the Record Column” about death of Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary. I felt so sad by this loss of a truly dedicated professional who will be remembered for years. His contribution to promote scientific publication was a singular honour in addition to his other role in the uplift of education, teaching, training and supporting ethical way of practice in our country.

I only had a limited contact with him. He was very kind to me and especially always appreciated and supported our work in the field of psychiatry. May his soul rest in peace. I know your grief as you have lost a great friend. I join you in passing on our sympathies to his family.

KARACHI: Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) organized a condolence meeting for late Dr. Maqbool H.Jafary former President of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME) and Chairman Editorial Board Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences at PMA House Karachi on March 28th 2015. Dr. Fatema Jawad President Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) and Chief Editor of Journal of Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA) was the host.

Dr. Fatema Jawad in her introductory remarks paid rich tributes to late Dr.Maqbool H.Jafary and also showed some pictures from the EMMJ3 which was held at Shiraz Iran as well as from EMMJ4 from Bahrain. Dr. Jamshed Akhtar General Secretary PAME and Editor of JCPSP read the message received from current President of EMAME Prof. Farhad Handjani while Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid read the messages from Prof. M.Ishaq former President of Pakistan Hypertension League and Prof. Shabih H.Zaidi an eminent ENT Surgeon and a dear colleague of Dr.Maqbool H. Jafary, both of whom are now in UK and sent their messages specially to be read on this occasion. Prof. Ishaq termed late Dr.Maqbool H.Jafary not only an outstanding physician but an institution in himself who was known for his friendly advice to everyone. Everyone who came in contact with him thought that as if he was his best friend. Prof. Shabih H.Zaidi in his message said “We have lost a great human being, a top class academician who despite remaining outside the fringes of our academic courtyards did more for academics, research and education than all put together. He shall remain in our memories as permanently etched out emblem of love for reform of mankind through his high moral values, ethics and teachings.

Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid said that he had an association with Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary lasting for over forty two years and he was a great source of strength for him. He was my mentor and we had extremely cordial relationship all these years. I learnt a lot from him, I dragged him in the field of Medical Journalism and here too he made tremendous contributions and left his imprints. He was affiliated with a large number of professional specialty organizations and even founded Pakistan Association of Pharmaceutical Physicians (PAPP) was its founder President. He made tremendous contributions in all these organizations in different capacities. Whenever we had some differences, either he used to convince me or I used to convince him and this is how these issues were resolved. He has over fifty papers published in peer reviewed journals and co-authored four books with me besides making numerous contributions in the medical and national press writing on various important issues.

The condolence meeting was attended by eminent members of the medical profession, office bearers of Pakistan Medical Association, representatives from the Pharmaceutical trade and industry, former executives from Novartis where he served as Medical Advisor for South East Asia and retired after thirty two years of distinguished service besides members of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors. Speaker after speaker recounted the qualities of late Dr. Maqbool H. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is always very aggressive in his approach and whatever we wanted to do, we always used to ask Dr. Maqbool H. Aslam Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences for the same purpose in the absence of Dr. Maqbool H.Jafary. Mr. Qaiser one of the family members of late Dr. Maqbool H. Inna Lillahi wa inna Ilahi Raji'oon. Saturday mornings in the Virden HH will seem lonely and painfully different, not hearing Dad J's weekly "...aahhh my Dearest Ali..." I met Dad J and Ammi when I traveled to Karachi to ask him permission to marry Tehseen. I am sure he reserved approval until he felt he had done his due diligence in our long meetings and talks while I was there; however, he never made me feel uncomfortable and Dad J went out of his way to make me feel welcomed and at home. He and all the Jafary's quickly made me feel like I was and had always been part of the Jafary family. Dad J quickly became a role model of success and servitude to others, an example to aspire to emulate: his action-oriented faith, as a father and a husband. It was clear that his entire family was his life, and that his 50 years with Ammi were so rich and full of happiness and love. What else could a person possibly aspire to achieve.  Dad J you are sorely missed but you have left a legacy to the many people whose lives you elevated. We are so sad that you aren't with us Dad J, yet you had such a profound impact on me that a part of you is forever a part of me. Inna Lillahi wa inna Ilahi Raji'oon.

The sadness and loss at Dr Maqbool Jafary's passing is shared by everyone in EMAME. Perhaps there is a way to honor the memory of everything he did to support and nurture EMAME -- for example, by naming the prize for best presentation at the next and subsequent EMMJ conferences after him.

With deepest condolences to Dr Jafary's family,

I find myself short of words to express my thoughts that could match the humane and kind personality of Dr Jafary. He was a true father figure and always very supportive and encouraging. He encouraged and mentored hundreds of medical writers who had limited access to such opportunities. He was an excellent music fan and sang old indian songs that we all loved. He will always be remembered and missed.
