I only just learned of Martha's passing. We worked together in Calaveras County, CA. I was a speech therapist and Martha worked with me as a translator to to assist me with my work with many children. She loved the children and their families and they loved her!  I retired in 2016, but I have often thought of Martha. She was a special person with an open, giving heart and she was a truly beautiful person. There is no doubt that she will be missed by many.

Tia Martha, It's been a little bit more than 3 month since you passed away and we still don't believe it. My aunt was the most kindness and happy person in the world. Even thought we lived in different countries, when she was able to visit us in Honduras we really enjoyed her presence and tio Chaytan's also. She loved going to the Mayan ruins in Honduras and usually had family chats every night at my grandma's house. My mom(her sister) misses her every day and she will be truly remembered forever. Sending our love to tio Chaytan and the boys and many blessings for them also. Love

Martha was my dear cousin. We grew up in different countries and never even lived in the same state. Our physical encounters over the years were few. However, from the first time I met Martha when I was a child she made an indelible impression. She stole my heart. Her kindness and love were palpable. In recent years with more available time, we became even closer. I lament the fact that I wasn't privileged to have her in my day to day life and didn't get to share all of her joys and passions. But I had the best of her - Her Love. I will miss her greatly but know she will forever be watching and caring for all of those she held dear. She was truly a remarkable woman.
To the Purohit Family, you are my family and my love for Martha extends to all of you!

I will never forget Our NY neighbor, Martha or her family. I have wonderful memories from my childhood, running back and forth from house to house and backyard to backyard. I am happy that we were able to keep in touch over all these years with emails and photos. My family and I will never forget when Martha flew across the country to be with us when we held a memorial service for my sister Susan who was killed on 9/11. I wish we had more time to visit with Martha that day. Chaitan, Hans, Ravi and Vikram, I am so very sorry for your great loss, God Bless you all. ❤️

Dearest Family of Martha,
Your wife, mother, grandmother, and friend were the light of days. Her positive nature, clearly spoken thoughts, and loving manner deeply impacted the families we worked with on a daily basis.
She was supportive in my personal life and I attempted to support her after our working together.
She will be deeply missed and forever in my heart.

Thank you for this beautiful tribute. Martha was a big part our Sunnyvale family. Our families spent many a Christmas and Thanksgiving together, and I have so many wonderful memories that I’m very thankful for. Martha was such a beautiful soul, always smiling, and so generous with her warmth and kindness. I will miss her very much, and I’m thinking of the Purohits at this very hard time. Sending my love your way.

Martha volunteered to help my Spanish speaking students learn English at Cherry Chase Sch in Sunnyvale. She arranged her work schedule so she would be able to help. My students LOVED her- she was always stylishly dressed and so eager to visit with my students...she made them feel very special with her enthusiasm and nurturing. She was so dedicated that during spring break, she arranged to meet some students in a park so they could continue practicing their English. Over the years we have exchanged Christmas notes and I always looked forward to hearing from Martha. She lived her life as an inspiration to all, making the world a better place. I am sorry that she's no longer with us and may her life continue to inspire all of us....Sara English

We moved to Sunnyvale about the same time, but it didn’t take long to feel like you knew her forever. We followed her and Chaitan to ‘Copper’ and then to Banning, they just couldn’t seem to shake us! The Purohit’s, Henne’s and Lacy’s shared many holidays and we will all meet again. I think God missed Martha and wanted her back home. So glad you were part of my life, dear friend. Thank goodness for Jay.

Even though I had known her for only a short time she was always so thoughtful when she found out mom was at an assisted living in the memory care unit she wanted to visit but because of Covid-19 we couldn’t so she would call me to see how mom was doing. Always with a beautiful smile, cheerful a very sweet lady. She’ll be missed by all especially our Sun Lakes group. Sincere condolences to the family she is now resting in the arms of our Lord.

Martha was a ray of sunshine in the world!! Our kids grew up together and we laughed together also at our Bunco meetings.
So many memories! I picture her in heaven having a coffee with my hubby Don just waiting for the rest of us to join her. That will be one happy day for us.

Having a "Martha" in ones life is very special -- I am so lucky -- she was special in mine and I have so many memories -- memories of sharing holidays, of our kids growing up pains, and so many good times. I will always miss my junkin' buddy. Becoming a grandmother for Jay was the high-light in her life and everyone shared her happiness.

Martha's Star is high up in the Orion Constellation shining brightly for us all.

My dear friend Martha will be so missed. We worked together at Allstate Savings and loan in Sunnyvale. She was my head teller and we became such good friends.  I moved to Boise Idaho and in 1998 she came to Boise to my Sons wedding and did the Bride's make up and Brides maids. We had a wonderful week together. Martha, my dear friend, Verna who has passed and me. My Blessings to the family.....What a wonderful lady!!!

Her Life

From the Family

"Meeting Martha in New York was a godsend angel to me. She was my pillar of life and inspiration full of positive thoughts and ideas. We took life as it came. (Being immigrants) it was a new experience every day and together made a wonderful life for fifty-six years. I will follow her to the stars."
      - From her loving husband, Chaitan

"You are my Guiding Light, my North Star, my Conscience and my Teacher. But most of all, you are my Mom, and I will forever be grateful to be your son. Any good within me is because of you and even though my heart hurts, I know that you have been called by a higher power, and that they need you now. Your generosity and you kindness can never be repaid, but I will do my best to honor your memory for the remainder of my days."
I love you mom, Me-
- From her son, Hans

"The best thing my mother gave me was life.  And what a life she gave me.  My mother's quiet dignity; that she carried about herself was one of the most beautiful displays of humanity that I have ever been a part of.  How lucky I was to be her son.
My mother was a leader, a professional with an uncompromising work ethic, a devout Roman Catholic, humanitarian, environmentalist, an avid reader, BritBox addict, and a proud grandma. She was always thoughtful and a strong Latin woman.  I can not forget her love of Elvis, William Holden, and all the animals of the world.
I will miss my mother everyday of my life. But I am comforted in the fact that the many lives that my mother touched, live a life, like the life my mother gave me."
- From her son, Ravi

"I was lucky to meet Martha, and even luckier to have her as my mother in law. We talked, emailed and visited often. She was my family, my friend and the best grandma to Jay. The first thing she always asked (even up to the last call we had) was, "how is Jay doing"? She loved him beyond words and although I miss her everyday, I'm thankful that Jay had 3 wonderful years with his grandma.  I love you Martha and will always keep your memory alive with Jay and all who knew you."
- From her Daughter in law, Nicole

Martha Purohit

For those who knew her well, you know Martha was one-of-a-kind, a gentle and kind-hearted person who loved life. Martha loved people and cherished the relationships she made. She was so friendly, welcoming and open minded.  She never passed a person without saying hello or sharing a smile. She always saw the good in people and the positive side of every situation. Martha’s nature was to always look for and find the goodness in people's heart. She treated people the way she wanted to be treated - with kindness and respect. She loved making friends, cultivating her friendships, and keeping in touch throughout the years with a visit, a phone call or with a note in the mail.

Among her many loves were both nature and traveling. She had such an appreciation for nature - trees, plants, mountains - every part of nature. She donated to help the earth and was always doing her part to help our planet. Her green thumb was unmatched, she could take care of any plant or cactus. She was able to nurture and help any living plant thrive. That is a testament to who she was. She was loving and nurturing and helped everyone she knew. Martha and Chaitan loved exploring together. They loved discovering new places, seeing new things and of course, Martha loved meeting new people. Huell Howser (one of her favorites) was often an inspiration for new places to visit. Trips to Arizona to visit Ravi, San Fransisco trips to visit Hans and trips to Redondo Beach to visit Vic, Nicole and Jay were always on the list.

Most of all, Martha deeply loved her family. She met her husband, Chaitan in New York in 1964 on the subway. That subway is where their love story began. They had three sons: Hans, Ravi and Vikram. On top of all of life’s goals, as a mother, Martha wanted her children to be happy. She was so proud of them and loved being a part of their lives. She would listen to stories about daily life and no matter the topic, you knew she was listening and would follow up with a thoughtful gift or article related the conversation.

One of the most special qualities about Martha was her love of children. After she retired, she spent over 15 years translating for the school district, specifically for special needs children (where English wasn’t the primary language). She not only translated for them and helped them navigate to get the care they needed, she became a true friend and advocate for these children and families. She took a special interest in their lives and became close friends, attending family functions and celebrations. She gave her time and love to all the children she worked with. Apart from being an amazing mother to her three boys, it was no surprise that she would relish in her newest role as grandmother to Jay. She doted on him and loved him with all her heart. Together, they shared a special bond. Just like with her students, she was patient, loving, played the role of listener, teacher and caretaker. He brought her joy and happiness with just one look. They are so lucky to have had each other.

End of Life

February 17, 2021
On Sunday, February 7th, Martha Josefina Navarro-Purohit, passed away. Martha was 80 years old, and one day after her 56th wedding anniversary to her adoring husband Chaitanya, she succumbed to the after effects of major brain surgery to remove a brain tumor. Martha survived breast cancer twice, skin cancer twice and had heart surgery twice, all of which she beat soundly.  We remember Martha on this day for what she was: a kind and gentle soul, who looked at everyone as God’s child and treated them as such. But we must also remember Martha as a fighter, who not only fought her ailments till the end, but also fought diligently for women’s rights, her children’s rights, and other children’s rights.

Joyful Woman

February 25, 2021
When I think of Martha, I picture her smiling brilliantly and laughing happily!  She always made time to ask how you were doing.  All of the kids were her kids. When my youngest son was little, he needed some extra care, and Martha made it a point to send little books and toys to brighten his days. She was so encouraging and you felt her genuineness. She made you feel like you had someone out there that had your back, even if you didn't see her every day. I sure will miss her.
