Her Life
June 1, 2013

Mary Bessie Winston Fannings was the youngest daughter born to the late Burrell Harrell and Rosa Winston in West Point, Georgia on September 16, 1928. She departed this earthly life peacefully on May 30, 2013.

Mary Bessie was educated in the West Point School System. After graduating, she married the late Jim E. Fannings, Sr. and started a life together in Detroit, Michigan. Mary Bessie was a shrewd businesswoman, owning a successful restaurant, Lee’s, for a number of years before returning back home to West Point.

At Emanuel Chapel C.M.E. Church, she continued her passion for cooking and entertaining by serving on the Kitchen Committee. In addition, she put her business skills to use as a member of the Trustee Board, Missionary, Sunshine Club (Pastor’s Aide), as well as, singing in the choir. In her own opinion, the choir could not survive without her tenor voice! She faithfully served Emanuel Chapel C.M.E. Church until her failing health.

Mary Bessie was affectionately referred to as Sister, Auntie, Dear, Ma, and Grandma. She was so loved and will be sorely missed by her family and a countless number of friends. There are not enough words or paper to describe the love she had for her grandchildren. Mary Bessie was truly special to all of us.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim E. Fannings, Sr. and her children Beverly Fannings Mayo and Jim Ernest Fannings, Jr.

Mary leaves to cherish most precious memories: loving and devoted grandchildren Eric and E. Rose Fannings, Atlanta, GA; a sister Precious Brooks, West Point, GA; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives, her church family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Emanuel Chapel C.M.E., P.O. Box 28, West Point, GA, 31833, in honor of Mary B. Fannings for the fence fund.

She will be missed by all who loved, respected and admired her. May she rest in peace.
