My mother Mary Markovich had a pure and beautiful soul that was manifest in her loving and giving lifetime. I'm sure she was a wonderful daughter to my grandparents Majer in Postage, PA. and an outstanding student in school. When she married the the love of her life, my father Edward, she couldn't wait to have us children, even suffering 4 miscarriages before it finally happened. For the rest of our lives, she showered us with love and care. That giving also extended to the rest of her family, friends and neighbors.
She was a great cook and especially loved baking goodies to give away. Her nut bread and cut out sugar cookies at Christmas were legendary, and her lemon meringue pie in demand. My 2 children spent many hours in her care, playing bingo, her favorite past time at the Essex bingo hall where she had a special table with friends, and lots of other games. A true gambler, she also bought lots of lottery tickets and loved the slot machines when Syl took her to casinos. Her yard was always meticulously groomed, planted with colorful flowers, vegetables we ate, and resplendent with varieties of her favorite, r.oses. I can still picture her sitting on the ground on one of the hand-woven carpets her mom made on her loom. I was often a recipient of a gorgeous rose bouquet. Besides babysitting, she also took children and grandchildren into her home when we needed it. She couldn't do enough to make us happy and comfortable! Especially when I was laid up after knee replacement surgery, I am SO grateful for all she did for me.
A devout Catholic, she had a special relationship with angels and believed she could hear them singing or talking. She had a large angel collection of many types. I think she embraced the concept of selfless service to others wholeheartedly, as i have never known a more generous lady!
She had her physical problems throughout her life- hearing loss, 2 types of cancer, and extremely painful osteoarthritis of her knees. Mom was not one to complain, though, and was very brave. She didn't much care for shoes, and it wasn't unusual to see her bare footprints in the frost or snow when she went outside to get the morning paper! Gotta love her!
I like to think the heavenly host of angels greeted her warmly at the gate to Paradise and thanked her for her devotion to them. And her reunion with my dad, whom she lost to heart disease when he was only 57, must have been absolutely something to see in its sheer joyousness! Sweet, kind, loving, generous Mary, home at last
Rest in peace, Mom, I will think of you always with much love! Eileen
