ForeverMissed

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Naomi Ezeagu, 52, born on October 29, 1963 and passed away on July 21, 2016. We will remember her forever.

There are some things that are just hard to explain. Naomi was a gem. One of those rare people you come across every now and then. She was intelligent as she was hard working.   Her passing represents a huge loss to the Liberia Country Office of the African Development Bank, because Naomi had knowledge on the people, the history, and culture of Liberia. She had experienced almost every aspect of life in this country, especially during the war – her favorite topic. If you wanted art work, she knew just where to go. If it was life among civil society organizations, she could give you a chapter.  She would see aspects of things you never could imagine unless you looked again as she pointed them out to you.

The Bank and ORWA has indeed lost a dedicated, devoted and productive staff member. Within Liberia’s challenges, Naomi gave her best. Our office is really in mourning. We could weep like babies, but what would it bring us???

It is hard to think that in December, Naomi left with her own two feet, and now her empty desk might only be filled by someone else. Her laughter is lost to us forever.

In all of this, Naomi has rested in the Lord. The pain of her cancer is no more. The burden of her loss is ours now to carry. May our load be light.

Fufu,

My first landing place upon my initial return in April 2011 to Liberia was your home. You were there for me, giving me all the support that I needed to make my landing, my return, a soft one. For this I will eternally be grateful because everyone needs a soft landing place to break into their return to Liberia. To say thank you is not enough. All I can do is to repeat what you did for me for another person. I really wish you did not have to go now. This country needs all the history and experience that you have stored in your repository - your head. It is a major loss for the country. I was so happy when I learned that you had returned to school and were working at the AfDB. So glad you were able to send your grandson to the US to jjoin your son. So fortunate for you to have reunited me with your brother Omar - my St. Patrick's and Basketball Brother whom I had lost touch with for a while. You were not only my friend, you were my sister. You will be surely missed. I pray for you to have a safe landing on the other side. I know that you are in peace. I pray that you intercede on our behalf with God for a better days to come to Liberia. Rest in Peace Fufu, till we meet again. That smile, That motherly spirit...will forever be etched in my mind. Go in peace and may light perpetual shine on you. Amen.

Her fearlessness

July 28, 2016

Naomi worked for us but more rightly with me at the fishing company in Monrovia. She was our secretary but actually she was a major link in keeping the operation of the company moving.Though she was an employee, you would never had known because we treated each other as parteners. My partner Ade & I  owned & operated 12 vessels during 1991-1194. A period that most had turned their backs on Liberia. Fast forward, two of vessels were captured by Taylor's forces...at the time greater Liberia  (which was occupied by Taylor) was a formidable force. However, our vessels entered into waters which we had no license to fish. Subsequently the vessels were boarded by Taylor forces. In the ensuing weeks of negotiations  (we had a predominantly crew of former Soviet block nationals), Naomi called in every favor, talked with anyone who would listen....including diplomats... eventually & because of her efforts I was able to secure the release of more than 30 crew members. This was all done during a PEACE conference held in the city of Yamasoukro, Ivory Coast. She was passionate, loyal, true, committed, wise, dependable.

Let me add that at the time of all this is had a young baby....a son...I had to leave him to travel in order to secure the release of so many... though I had a nanny, Naomi assured me that she would "take care of him". She said, "go and bring our people home... their families need them too". I brought ALL the crew home knowing I didn't have to worry about my home...

Rest in peace!!! I shall never forget how good & great you were
