A Tribute To A Blessed Soul: Prof J. A. T. Ojo

Professor J. A. T. Ojo of Ikogosi Ekiti, a UNILAG Don, Professor Emeritus of International Banking and Finance, UNILAG, President several terms of MMU(Men's Missionary Union), Baptist, Obanikoro, Lagos, former(Ex) staff of OPEC, Vienna, Austria, Fellow CIBN, Nigeria,(formerly NIB), Former Dean Business School, Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria, a humble man, has gone to rest from his labours at 79.

Prof. made great impact on a number of souls I knew, including the UNILAG B.Sc. Finance (with special reference to Banking, class of 1986) of which I am one humble part.

I have been so blessed by our late father Prof Ojo, his wife and the divinely blessed children from brother Toyin, eldest, to the youngest. I was an orphan admitted to study in Prof's department and he practically adopted me, housed me, tutored me, personally taught me Finance Research(even till far into the night), Article writing, Academics, Consulting, Christianity (practically, by his love for people) I am honored, immensely grateful to God and humbled by this life so lovingly lived and so positively touching to humanity!

Referring to an earlier tribute, what can we say about the Agbeje he gave us to eat! The bananas for UNILAG Staff Primary School children visiting Prof at his UNILAG office! Now at age 54, I still remember those children singing "Baba Ologede" as they dance away from his door. The pawpaw fruit for young souls refreshed by his care, jovial spirit and magnanimity!

The love and closeness to the ways of Christ, the Prince of Peace, shared by Prof Ojo and the entire Tade family, shown to us from other families, is a beautiful thing to behold! The elders of that family and even the "younger" ones, like Kolade Alade, Tayo Tade, made many happy to have known this family!

We have been greatly loved because "God gave us you," sir! Rest in the blossom of the Lord, until we meet to part no more.

PROFESSOR J.A.T. OJO WAS INDEED THE PROFESSOR OF PROFESSORS

I first met Professor J.A.T. Ojo when I enrolled in the Department of Finance at the University of Lagos in the late 1970s. He later left Nigeria for Vienna, Austria for a short opportunity with OPEC. After his return to Unilag our path crossed. I had completed the B.Sc. degree program and was a graduate assistant and a member of the first cohort of the M.Sc. degree in finance in the department. Professor Ojo was one of my professors. He reached out to me, and I became close to the family. My closeness to the family led me to attend church with the Ojos. I left Nigeria in the late 1980s and was regularly in touch with the family. My relationship with Professor Ojo was the reason I chose to serve as a Fulbright Scholar at Covenant University in 2012 when he was a key member of the university. Professor Ojo was a scholar in the true sense of the word. He was a hard worker who would stay diligently in his office at all hours conducting academic research. Anyone who knew Professor Ojo would tell you of his devotion to academia. He made his mark in the field of banking and finance in Nigeria and beyond. At a recent ‘Celebration of Life’ in Toyin’s church in the U.S., Toyin said that his dad turned down monetary offers from some “executive” students. I was shocked. Of course, some Nigerians are bold in a negative way. I cannot wrap my head on the idea that someone would look at Professor Ojo and bring such a request to him. The Professor Ojo that I knew was an upright man. A man who was dedicated to God, family and his community. In 2012, when I was at Covenant University with Professor Ojo, he would attend the church service on any Sunday in Ota and then drive back to Lagos to attend a second service at the Shepherd Hill Baptist Church. Professor Ojo was a father to all. Any time he was in the U.S., he would call to let me know he was around. Most of the time, we would organize a get-together and would appreciate his prayer points as a man favored by God. I have no doubt that the Lord has accepted him into His bosom. I’m already missing him sorely. May the Lord grant him Eternal Rest.

DADDY PROF. JOSHUA ADEWALE THOMPSON OJO.
I really do not know where to start. I have found it too difficult and unbelievable writing a tribute to someone whom I have known from childhood as a father. More so when we were trusting God while you were asking us to join our faith with yours believing you would get well soon.
Hardly did I know that I would be so close to you in 1968 when you taught me History in form one at Ekiti Parapo College, Ido - Ekiti where you worked briefly after graduating from the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University. It was during this time that you met my only sister Florence Olayemi, the girl who eventually became your wife of forty years before her demise in 2009. You have been there for me and my family as a father and somebody to look up to as I was always around you and your wife since then.
The memory is still fresh of how you used to drive all the way from Lagos to Ikogosi to see Yeye (as your late mother was fondly called), to Epe to see my mother, to Ado-Ekiti to see your sister Mrs Ilojo, Akure to see Daddy Ogundare and Ondo to visit Baba Ondo (your late Uncle). On our way back,  the car would be loaded to the brim (with no space to put our legs), with fresh farm produce such as yam, assorted vegetables, plantain, bush meat which you loved so dearly, assorted fruits and in particular your favorite pumpkins (agbeje). Oh! how time flies.
My trip to Austria in 1979 for holiday with your children when you were working at OPEC while your wife was a student in Germany is still fresh in my memory. It was from your home I took off to my own home. My wedding was planned from your home and conducted at your church, Shepherd Hill Baptist Church Obanikoro, as I started my own family with my husband. Even after our wedding, we had to put up with your family for good 6 months before moving to our own apartment. This is how magnanimous you were to us.
Our children grew up to know you as “Daddy Campus”.
Daddy, what more can we say, you were a loving husband to your wife. You stood with her when she needed your presence. Quite unfortunate she was snatched away from you suddenly by the cold hands of death in 2009. An incidence that shook you greatly!!! You were a faithful and wonderful father to your children. Thank God that you trained them in the ways of the Lord which is evident in their lives even when they had left home.
What more can we say, your godly virtues is highly contagious as no one can go out without the morning devotion nor sleep without the night prayer time and fellowship. Daddy, our consolation is that you modeled many lives. You left a godly legacy for all of us. You touched numerous lives and homes. Above all, we are confident that you are resting in the bosom of the Lord you loved so much.
Good night Daddy. We shall meet at the resurrection morning where we meet to part no more.

You are going to be greatly missed daddy. You were an epitome of humility, love and devotion to your God. I remember when we moved to Magodo in 2012, you became so close to our family as if we've known for years. Every morning then, you would come and knock at our door and began to sing joyfully and the environment would become a mini church worship. You were so caring and selfless and you would never look down on anybody. You reflected Christ in all you did and there was no way anyone could cast aspersion on your genuine born again experience. Daddy, daddy as I fondly called you, you will be greatly missed . I am so certain that you are already amongst the heavenly choir singing joyfully. Rest in perfect peace.

Prof. J.A.T Ojo has always been a complete gentleman. Soft speaking. Unassuming.
I was in Form 1 while he was in his final year. Form 5. I never for once saw him quarrel with his mates or punish a junior throughout the time. The last time I met him was during the launching of his book at Covenant University in the company of Chief Olorunfemi and Engineer Bejide. It was also the first time, I set my eyes on the Proprietor of the University. Bishop David Oyedepo. Thereafter, Prof. Ojo intervened unsuccessfully to ensure we are offered the Language Laboratory installations contract by the institution. It was awarded to our rival who made a poor job of it. The lab has to date, remained redundant since it was installed. That showed how caring and patrotic he was. Exceptional. 
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Goodnight my Professor.

Daddy! Hmmm...Words fail me to be honest..A strong man indeed! You fought battles physically and spiritually. You loved God dearly you didn’t joke with your Christian life. You thought me so many lovely hymns. Still hard to phantom but God knows best.

We bless the Lord for the life and times of Prof JAT.I first met Prof in 1997 when I served my Sabbatical at DLI, University of Lagos and he was the Director of the Institute. A good boss who was very kind and always willing to help.I really enjoyed working with him and he gave me good advice for the development of my Career.
Our paths crossed again in 2004 when I was on Second Sabbatical at Covenant University, Once again he was my boss: the Dean of the Faculty where I served.The staff and students loved this aimable hardworking, erudite scholar who was a father figure to all
I later got to be connected with the family through his kind late wife, Mrs Florence Ojo ,who I discovered to be a senior sister to my friend, Mrs Victoria Ojo.I enjoyed my relationship with the family till his demise. The Baptist Convention and The Academic world will definitely miss Prof.May the Lord comfort his widow, his children and grandchildren and the entire Ojo family from Ikogosi.The Lord will glorify Himself in all the burial activities in Jesus name.Jesus is Lord!

TRIBUTE TO A PROFESSOR OF PROFESSORS

Popularly known as "Prof. JAT". A father to many students and friends to many lecturers. An epitome of blessings to all who had encounter with him. He was my lecturer, 1986 - 89 (Unilag.) and also my dean during this period. After 29 years (2018), Prof. Ojo was the Dean, College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, Mountain Top University, where I am currently lecturing. He worked all through his lifetime. His passion for teaching, researching, coaching, mentoring and publishing books had no boundaries. He feared God and was committed to the works of God as a chorister. A disciplinarian and a man of high integrity. He surprised me anytime I find him teaching as he would not sit but stand and move from one point to another to assess the understanding of the students. His classes were very interactive and until his retirement in 2019, Prof JAT had been a father to all in the College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences (CHMS), MTU Adieu Prof.

TRIBUTE TO LATE PROFESSOR JOSHUA ADEWALE THOMPSON OJO

The Bible in the book of Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, verses 1&2 says
"To everything there is a Season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die: a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted"

The season has come to bid farewell to our dear Professor Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo. A man whose humble beginning started as a Clerk at Barclays Bank between 1961 and 1965.

Late Professor Adewale Ojo's quest for knowledge and scholarship led him to the Academics, where he rose and attained the coveted Professorial Chair in Finance on 1st October, 1984 in the University of Lagos.

Based on his yearning to contribute to the development of his Faculty, he was appointed Dean, Faculty of Business Administration between 1988 and 1992, Acting Dean from 1994 to 1995, making him serve for two consecutive tenures.

Not done with management at the University, late Professor Adewale Ojo achieved yet another feat on the 1st of August, 1995, as he was appointed the Director, Correspondence and Open Studies Institute, University of Lagos, a position he held until the 31st of July, 1997, (the first to be appointed outside the Faculty of Education).

Among his numerous achievements as Director of the Institute are:

Movement of the Institute from Faculty of Arts Building to its permanent site.

Standard welfare of Staff and Students of the Institute.

Selfless service to his numerous Students, Department of Finance, Faculty of Business Administration, Distance Learning Institute and the University in general. (This was attested to by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, FAS who was one of his Postgraduate Students).

Late Professor Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo was an epitome of good character, a complete success in all sphere of life.

Our amiable Professor, we love you but God loves you more.

May your Gentle ana Kind Soul Rest in Perfect Peace. Amen.

TRIBUTE TO DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR JOSHUA ADEWALE THOMPSON OJO

Distinguished Professor Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo, the pioneer Dean of the College of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, Mountain Top University, has gone to be with the Lord and we celebrate Jesus in his life. When 'Baba', as we fondly called him assumed duty in the College, he showered everyone with positive aura, sense of responsibility, anointing for impact and humorous disposition.

Baba was very friendly and related freely with everyone in spite of the wide margin of age between him and every member of the College. He was an embodiment of compassion and practiced Christianity of no deceit. He related with every College member's problem's of life personally and was always willing to bring solution to such problems be it physical, social, financial or spiritual. He was a gifted counselor as he would sit the affected persons down for a session of Godly advise which in most cases brought solution to such problems.

Simple but thorough, Baba always frowned at tardiness. He instilled in members of the College a deep sense of responsibility. He knew how to commend good/positive performances and how to lovely/Godly rebuke/correct shortcomings .

Baba was a firm believer in the word of God and its power. At every College Board meeting, Baba would always utilize the opportunity to read the word of God and give exhortation. This was very dear to him as he believed that all issues of life were settled in the word of God. As a result of this, every member of the College became a better person.

With Baba, there was no dull moment; his sense of humor was legendary and second to none in the entire University. If he took part in any stand-up comedy competition, there was no doubt that Baba would defeat all other contestants. In all, Baba was humane, friendly and Godly. He impacted positively all that came his way. He will be sorely missed, not only by his biological family members but also by his academic family where he had been a mentor for several decades. We rejoice with the family for the good life Baba lived, for the legacy he left behind, and above all, for the hope of where Baba has gone to be- heaven.

I will never forget you in my life, God bestowed on you wisdom and understanding from above,you are so brilliant, vibrant, diligent and above all fear of God is your watchword.
Our father late Pa Mathew Ojo Tade died in 1957 when you're in form 2 at Ekiti parapo college, that morning of our father demise on 28th September 1957, our mother late Lydia Adesoye Ojo told our father that look at Adewale who was sent for school fees from school and our father replied that every one will contribute ten ten kobo for your assistance and he gave up the ghost, ha what a lost, calamity!
Since then God have been showing mercy and uncommon favor upon Adewale my brother,he won scholarship in IJERO districts Council in 1958 till 1960 to complete his secondary education.
He equally won federal scholarship due to his brilliance to further his education in 1968 to England where he obtained his MSC and PhD respectively.
In England, he ensures that all of us, his younger ones we're able to further their education, he enroll me at Uromi trade School in 1968 to 1972.
I know him as my father because, l was just 12 years when our father died and up till his dead he played and demonstrated fathers roles to every one of us, he confessed how dearly he loves me, he tells me everything l need to know, he said whenever we are aged and gone that he loves us to meet at a resurrection day,adieu my brother.
We met last in October 2020 when he came for burial and l told him to correct some issues which he obliged immediately as if he knows that his time is nearer, l got wind of his sickness and l visited him immediately in Lagos where l asked him of is fearing and he said promptly that's not feeling better at all, l prayed for him and he responded, but unfortunately he died five days l left his place.
I ll forever missing you on daily basis,o ma se o.

Prof JAT Ojo was my mentor in academic world. He was instrumental to my starting a Doctoral Degree in Finance at the University of Lagos ("UNILAG")and subsequent appointment as a pioneer staff of Department of Banking and Finance at the then Ondo State University Ado Ekiti ("OSUA"). Although my stay in academics was brief, the mentorship of Prof Ojo is evergreen in my memory.
As an academia in Department of Finance at UNILAG for many years, he contributed immensely to the training and manpower needs of the Nigeria banking industry.
At OSUA, with other pioneering academics, Prof developed a curriculum that elicits the interest of staff and students in wide areas of Banking and Finance("BF"), hence OSUA was able to produce in 1989 a set of graduating students who are now accomplished professionals in BF. Most of these students are mainly Ekiti indigenes because of community interest of Prof Ojo to Ekiti natives at home and diaspora .
Prof was unassuming and an accomplished authority in Development Finance. He will be missed by all. May His soul rest in peace.

Professor JAT OJO was one of my mentors, he helped me to secure admission for law degree at University of Lagos. Immediately i completed my law degree my former company Dunlop Nigeria Plc elevated me to the post of purchasing manager.

One of your first class beneficiaries, and your son, Biodun Ogundipe ( Balesi of Ikogosi Ekiti).

The role naturally conferred on you as the ELDERLY FATHER in the house of ALU-TADE of Ikogosi-Ekiti, this you diligently/adequately served well and held so dearly to your heart. Your death created a big hole in the family as there are major assignment and projects the reports of which you would have loved and gladly taken to our progenitors: Late Miriam Oyindamola Alade (Nee Tade), Late Rev. Solomon Ogunmola Tade, Late Matthew Ojo Tade, Late Enoch Oni Tade and Late Julianah Ajibola Oguntusa (Nee Tade). As it is, the onus now is left to us here to carry forth with the projects and see to its logical conclusion, for which I know you will be greatly pleased so as others in the great beyond. We are MISSING YOU ALREADY my FATHER! We will forever cherish with fondness every moment you spent here. Such MEEKNESS, HUMILITY and a BEAUTIFUL SOUL with the HEART OF GOLD. Rest on well with the LORD JESUS CHRIST whom you so much loved and served all your life. It is well, all all is well! Love as ever.

I write on behalf of myself, my family, and Ekiti Parapo Unilag Estate to express our deep condolence to the family of Prof. Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo of Ikogosi-Ekiti and pay a tribute to this worthy son of Ekiti.

Prof. J.A.T Ojo was a highly celebrated scholar who distinguished himself as one of the foremost Financial Economists in the land. We observed with pride the trajectory of his academic career from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to Universities of Leeds and Wales where he left a blazing trail. His sojourn as an international money and financial analyst at OPEC secretariat in Vienna also prepared him for a sterling career at the University of Lagos where he was head of Finance Department and Dean of Faculty. We noted with admiration that even in retirement, he was a much sought-after professor of finance by Covenant University and Mountain Top University, his last port.

Prof. J.A.T Ojo was a highly valued member of Ekiti Parapo in whom we are all proud.........an unassuming, un-obtrusive yet extremely cerebral ambassador of Ekiti. A committed and un-apologetic Christian of the Baptist Faith, we pray that God in His mercy would rest his gentle soul and keep the loved ones he has left behind.

PROFESSOR ADE T. OJO: A GIANT IN THE BANKING WORLD

Professor Ade T. Ojo was a great academic, a dynamic researcher, a development enthusiast and a benevolent father.

He was essentially the progenitor of Banking and Finance as a discipline in Nigeria. He was instrumental to the establishment of Banking and Finance Department in Ondo State University (now Ekiti State University). My coursemates and I were the pioneer students of Banking and Finance in OSUA in 1985. We had the privilege to be taught by Professor Ojo for four academic sessions. Yes, we were under his academic training for eight semesters. He gave us all the education one could dream of in domestic and international finance. He loved us so much that all academic and non-academic staff in the university recognized us as his adopted children.

His demise was like the fall of the brightest star from the firmament of Finance. All his former students who are now leaders in the private and public sectors of the economy felt the huge loss. A great mentor has exited this world. A prolific author has just dropped his pen and left for the celestial realm. He will sorely be missed.

In recognition of his positive impact on us when we were his students, my classmates and I (OSUA BFN '89) have created an Endowment Fund in his honour. Our Endowment Fund will enable Ekiti State University to give Professor Ade T. Ojo's Prize to the best graduate of Banking and Finance at the University's Annual Convocation. Every recipient of the Prize will also receive N50,000.00 as a reward for academic excellence. This will serve to memorialize Professor Ojo. It is worth mentioning that contributions into the Endowment Fund began about three months before his death. Our intention was to allow him to witness the honour while he was alive but God had a better plan for his eternal retirement. In spite of his demise, OSUA BFN '89 has resolved to go ahead with the glorious plan.

On behalf of all members of OSUA BFN '89, I pray for the repose of his gentle soul. May the Lord comfort his wife, children and grandchildren.

TRIBUTE TO DN. PROF. J.A.T. OJO (1941 - 2021).

Shakespeare said "All the world is a stage, and men and women merely players. They have their entrances and their exits..."So, our beloved Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo , the godly,erudite scholar of international repute, humble and caring friend and brother has played his part and left the stage.
He advocated hard work, honesty and truthfulness. He took interest in people around him and made sacrifice for them as necessary. All who were close to him will always remember him as a person who viewed situations and challenges from positive angle. No doubt he has deposited something valuable in us all not only to help us here but also more importantly, in eternity with Jesus.
I conclude this tribute in King David's words in Psalm 37 verse 25 "I have been young, and now am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken not his seed begging bread."
May we all finish our earthly journey well and strong as well in the mighty name of Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Amen

I knew Daddy Ojo as a dedicated and kind father to all. I spoke to him last in January 2021 and didn't think it would be the last time. I've had many good encounters with him when he visited.
you were and will always be an inspiration to us, the entire family and anyone who knew you. You have left a void in the family that will never be filled. Your Death came as a shock to us and as you sit in the arms of the Lord, I pray your gentle soul continue to rest in peace sir.

I am inspired to celebrate the life and times of Late Professor Joshua Adewale Thompson Ojo, also known as Professor JAT, who spent most part of his life earnestly seeking ways to better the careers of others. When one looks around and see the number of academic products (former students) of Baba, many of whom are now Professors, Bankers, Industrialists, Consultants, Pastors, Business men/women, among others, one can say without equivocation that he fulfilled the divine mandate of fruitfulness.

Professor J. A. T. Ojo has fundamentally influenced my academic development as my Mentor and Supervisor at both first and second degrees. He read and improved the quality of my Ph.D thesis and inaugural lecture. He was a Lead Editor of the book published by the School of Management Technology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria, to honour me as the first Substantive Dean of the School. To God be the glory, I am happy that he was able to read the book, which was delivered to him on Sunday, 14th March, 2021, before he died on Wednesday, 17 March, 2021.

In appreciation of the rare robust academic-heartedness of the Late Distinguished Professor, all his academic products (former students) have agreed to stand by the family, pay the last respect by attending the programmes of the burial ceremony and ensure that the dream of baba does not die with him.

Our prayer is that God shall grant his soul eternal rest, and he shall live in the best heaven.

Adieu! my great academic father and benefactor! Since I came in contact with you many years ago by divine providence, you have changed my academic and career landscape. You took me and related with me not just as a student but as your bossom son in whom you were well pleased. You sincerely opened all the available channels of your resources for me to benefit from. Your words of encouragement, timely assistance, discipline and warnings are of great benefits. I will continue to be eternally greatful for all you did to make me what I am today. Your investment in my academic and career upliftment is immeasurable and indelible. Thanks very much sir for the trust and great confidence reposed in me to the extent of making me your 'bestman'. I pray I will not let you down. You were more than a father. You were an incomparable Mentor and uncommon teacher. You were truly an erudite scholar, a professor of professors, a teacher of teachers, and the acclaimed doyen of Banking and Finance profession in Nigeria. You were truly a God sent. Besides, you were God-fearing, faithful and a committed servant of God with high integrity. You exhibited zero tolerance for indiscipline, indolence and indecency in all ramifications. You were indeed a man beyond description!!!. You have left a great legacy behind which will continue to speak loud of your virtues for generations to come. It has been a joy to know Joshua as a good friend since his postgraduate days in Bangor, North Wales nearly 50 years ago.  He was a lovely presence at Penrallt Baptist Church, full of warmth, laughter and a deep faith.  That faith was reflected in immense dedication to his work, which usually kept him at his books late into the night. We will never forget the party with students from around the world at which he celebrated the award of his PhD. It was a privilege there to handle his bound thesis, and to see alongside the traditional thanks to supervisors, professors, and others his expression of gratitude to the God who had enabled him to complete it.  We had never encountered such a dedication before, and it left a lasting impression.  We thank God for the privilege of having known him.

I first knew Prof from a distance as a lecturer in University of Lagos and never would I have thought I will be married to his niece. He has achieved so much and yet he lived a very simple life with so much admiration.

Adieu Baba,may your soul rest in perfect peace.

A father, a Missionary and erudite Scholar Deacon (Prof) J A T Ojo will always be remembered for his passion for the things of God, especially Evangelism. Prof Ojo would always organize and sponsor a mission visit on every Good Friday to Iberekodo, in Eti-Osa Local Govt Area of Lagos. His valuable contributions to the growth of Missions & Evangelism is unquantifiable before he laid down his sword for the great reward.

Definitely, Baba Prof Ojo did not go to meet His Creator empty handed;
May God help and enable those of to also finish well and strong.
