Welcome to the Memorial Website of Reverend Magora Kennedy

We honor the life and legacy of Reverend Magora Elmira Kennedy, a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength in the fight for civil rights and LGBTQ+ equality. Born on September 22, 1938, in Albany, New York, Reverend Kennedy's journey was marked by courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

From a young age, Reverend Kennedy faced immense challenges. At 14, she was forced into a marriage to "cure" her homosexuality, a testament to her mother's misunderstanding and the societal prejudices of the time. This experience, however, only fueled her determination to live authentically and fight for her rights. Reverend Kennedy's life was a testament to her indomitable spirit - being black, lesbian, and a woman of the church, she continuously battled uphill for her beliefs and identity.

Her activism was as diverse as her experiences. As a former Black Panther, Reverend Kennedy was deeply involved in the civil rights and women’s rights movements. She stood tall during the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history, marking her as a key figure in the fight for equality. Her work didn't stop there; she continued to inspire younger generations through her advocacy and outspoken nature, remaining out and proud for over 50 years.

Reverend Kennedy's personal life was as complex as the times she lived in. Marrying a man 21 years her senior at a young age, she later annulled this union and courageously came out as a lesbian. Her second marriage, to a bisexual man, further highlights the nuanced challenges faced by individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.

Her career was a blend of activism and ministry. A talented comedian and singer, known for her platinum wig, Reverend Kennedy eventually attended seminary in New York. She served as a minister and was involved in various church choirs, despite facing discrimination for her sexuality. Her time with the Black Panther Party, especially after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., reflects her commitment to fighting injustice in all its forms.

Reverend Kennedy's legacy is enriched by her participation in significant events and media, such as the documentary "CURED" and interviews commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. A former Chaplain of the Stonewall Veterans Association and a member of the National Action Network, her impact is felt far and wide.

Her writings, including "This Goddess Has Landed: Does She Have a Message For YOU!" and her forthcoming book "Shades of Stonewall," encapsulate her philosophy of love, acceptance, and the power of sisterhood.

As we remember Reverend Kennedy, let's embrace her teachings: Mother Goddess/Father God loves you just as you are, and love is the most powerful force in the Universe. Her life reminds us to love ourselves, stand proud, and fight tirelessly for what is right.

Thank you, Reverend Magora Kennedy, for your unyielding spirit, your inspiring journey, and your lasting contributions to the fight for equality and justice. Your legacy continues to light the way for future generations.
