Richard was born in Rostov in Russia in 1913. He was a British citizen, his father serving as the vice consul to the British embassy in Rostov. The family returned to the UK in 1917 as the Bolshevik revolution began.
Richard attended Bembridge school on the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately he was forced to leave as his father disappeared and the family were then in financial trouble.
At the age of 15 he was sent to Canada to work on a farm as part of a programme to help needy children.
He returned to the UK aged 18. He met and married his first wife and had a daughter named Isabel born in 1938.He was in the army and stationed in India amongst other postings.
He served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War and fought at the Battle of El Alamein. He spent much of the war in North Africa and also in Burma fighting the Japanese. He transferred to REME in 1945 and after leaving the army worked in engineering. He met his second wife Joy and married her in 1966. Their son Charles was born in 1966 and daughter Caroline in 1969.
They moved to Devon where he worked as an electrical engineer until ill health forced his retirement. He remained in Devon for the rest of his life.
His health declined over the next few years, having several heart attacks and 2 strokes.

He eventually died in 1987 shortly after meeting his first grandchild James who was born in 1987.
He was cremated and his ashes sprinkled at Crow Point in Devon.
He had 7 other grandchildren who unfortunately he never lived to see born. He now has a great grand daughter born in 2020.
His oldest daughter is a retired archivist and his son a paramedic and his daughter a registered nurse.
