Her Life

Roberta was born in Brooklyn, New York to Rosaline and Louis Klein on April 3rd, 1936. Her family moved to Hollywood, California when she was about 6 years old.  She attended Melrose Ave. Elementary school, Bancroft Jr. High and Fairfax High school. After graduation, she attended L.A.City College. In Junior High, she played the piano in the school orchestra. During High School, she worked at the Ontra Cafeteria. As a teenager she loved to ice skate and horseback ride. She belonged to the California Rangers ( a horseback riding group). She was a Girl Scout and champion cookie seller. She loved to hang out at Santa Monica Beach with family and friends.

Later she worked for Financial Secretary. She worked for the L.A. Unified School District in the office at San Fernando High, Kennedy High and Grant High schools.

In 1955, she married Armand Szulc and they had 3 children, Deborah, Diane, and Larry. Later that marriage ended and she married Ed Thompson, better known as Jack. They were very happy. She cared for him after he was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident.  He passed away in December of 2004. At the same time, she took care of her mother until her death in April of 2006.
Roberta had many friends. Bev & Elliott Michael and Adella & Lenny York were her friends for 60 Years.

Roberta loved life. She was a volunteer at the Wilkinson Senior Center in Northridge. She played Bingo there every Tuesday and Thursday. She loved shopping for grocery items for Bingo prizes. Shopping was her passion. She loved traveling, sometimes with her friends, sometimes with her family, and sometimes with her sister Francine. She loved gambling and going to the horse races at Santa Anita. She also loved her dog, Ritzie.

Roberta loved her grandchildren very much: Deborah's kids - Jeff, Danielle, and Sam. Diane's kids -  Daniel, Josh, Aaron, Nathan, Katherine and Benjamin.  Also, her great grandkids from her granddaughter Danielle - Alex and David.  She was very proud of all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And she loved her sister, neices and nephews and extended family, and loved all the holiday gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas at Sheri and Dave's house and MIke and Allison's.  And of course, Ritzie was her faithful companion at home whom she adored!
