My heart and prayers are with the family at this time. Ruth Barnett was one of the main reasons I became a teacher. I was a paraprofessional in Rhonda Vansant's kindergarten classroom at Clubview School around 1985. My husband had many medical problems and I was struggling to provide for my three children. "Miss Ruth" encouraged me to go to Columbus State, (CSU) and obtain my teaching degree. I had stayed at home with my children and would be a 38 year old freshman. When I was apprehensive about that she said, " Becky, you are going to be that age no matter what, go for it". And I did. I enrolled in the Adult Reentry class, got my teaching degree in 1991, and went to Troy at Phenix City to get my Master's Degree. I am now retired after being a teacher at River Road School for 24 years. This was all possible because Ruth Barnett had Faith in me. She helped me as I continued to be a paraprofessional by day and a student by night. Her encouragement was always so uplifting. Through the years, I tried to encourage other paraprofessional to continue their education and would relay what Ruth did for me. I lost touch with her and so now I am hoping and praying that She will somehow know how very much she has meant to me throughout these many years. So sorry for the length of this. Just wish I could have relayed this to her personally . One other thing, I was always amazed at her talent to make anything out of construction paper. We would need something and she would get her scissors and whip it out.
