Knowing Grandma Sadie meant knowing there was always room for you and your friends at the table or for the night. Staying the night meant hearing her read the Bible out LOUD and praying a prayer that included you. Meant homemade biscuits and pear preserves. Meant cooking a full country meal before the Rooster crowed so she could help fill the tobacco barn. Meant chicken houses, picking up eggs, and beating snakes to death with the baseball bat. Meant church every Sunday and a Sunday lunch with the pastor, friends, and family invited. Meant every Christmas Day afternoon at her house. Meant an Easter Hunt for years in her yard. Meant never using the front porch or front door but wearing out the side porch and side door. Meant hearing how wonderful her husband Sam was and how much he loved his children and grandchildren. Meant hearing the stories of old, connecting you with your heritage. Meant being surrounded by her ten brothers and sisters and the entire extended family. Meant an afghan or quilt to all her children, grandchildren, and married great grandchildren and others. Meant every picture you ever gave her was on the wall or dresser. Meant time with you was the best time of her day. Meant her reading her Bible everyday, at the end with a bright light, large print, and a magnifying glass. Meant her memorizing your birthday and anniversary, and the birthday and anniversary of every member of your family. Meant her living to 102 and still contributing to your day by valuing you for who you were. Meant everyone deserved to hear the words "I love you"."
Grandma, we will do our best to pass it on.
