Obituary
Sheeba Ouseph Paranilam, was born on March 17, 1971 in Chalakudy, Kerala, India to the late Ouseph Thekkiniath, and Sossa (Chuliadan) Ouseph.  She was married to her devout husband, Jose Paranilam for 25 years. Sheeba departed this earth on December 13, 2020. She is survived by her husband Jose, and two sons Alex, and Robin, her mother Sossa, her siblings Mr. Shabu Thekkiniath, Mr. Shaji Thekkiniath, and Mrs. Sheena Kanjirakadan, and their families.

In her early years, Sheeba was an extraordinary student. Throughout all of her primary and secondary education, she was top of her class. In addition to her academic excellence, she participated in speech and dance competitions, developing into a stellar, well-rounded individual. She was a role model and inspiration to all around her, having held many leadership roles within her schooling and always striving to try new things. Supplementing her education, she continued to develop in her faith, studying the Catechism and going to Sunday School. After completing her secondary education, Sheeba went on to complete her Bachelor's degree in Nursing at Calicut University in 1992. Then in the summer of 1995, she married her husband Jose Paranilam.

After their marriage, Sheeba immigrated to the United States where she initially lived with the Paranilam family in one house in Baltimore, Maryland. In this new country, she loved occupying her time with plenty of dancing, fishing, growing vegetables, playing with nieces and nephews, and spending time with family and friends. Sheeba also enjoyed performing cultural dances at various Kairali programs. She was known to be an active member in her new local community as well.

While in the United States, Sheeba went on to further her education. She obtained a Master’s degree in Nurse Anesthesia from Georgetown University in 2005. Sheeba then continued on to earn a PhD in Nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2013. Soon after completing her doctoral studies, Sheeba acquired a M.B.A from Madurai Kamaraj University in 2014. She also obtained a Maryland real estate license in 2018. Sheeba always had a love for learning and education, recently she even went on to study towards a degree in theology.

Sheeba worked as a registered nurse at various hospitals in the Baltimore area before joining the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center team in 2007, where she became the Chief Nurse Anesthetist in 2014. Sheeba loved her job and enjoyed providing excellent care to the veteran patients at the VA. She was also involved in various organizations, whether it be cultural (Kairali), professional (IANAM, MANA, Hopkins School of Nursing) or religious (CCD, 4Life, Women’s Forum, Parish Council). Her loving heart, humble mindset, and infectious personality made her a beacon of guidance for all in the community.

Although she received many awards and accomplishments, the one she took most pride in was raising her two sons Alex and Robin. In addition to pursuing higher education and working full time, she was devoted in taking care of her sons as well as her parents and in-laws. Sheeba knew the significance of keeping family close, and she exemplified this throughout her life. She was happiest when spending time with her family, and she emphasized the importance of education and faith. Sheeba was described by many relatives, as the one who bridged the gap between the two generations of her family.  She was known to be the one that explained the history and traditions of Kerala, to the younger people of the family. Sheeba always encouraged her kids to try new things, to do their best, and keep God close. Furthermore, she was a role model to all within her family. Sheeba welcomed anyone into her home and enjoyed spending time with others. She had a charismatic and friendly nature, being kind to anyone and everyone she met.

Sheeba passed away peacefully in her home after a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family and friends, as per her wishes. A true kind soul, Sheeba will be missed by everyone. However, she will forever be in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers we request everyone to send a donation to Mercyful Charities. Donations will support low income and less fortunate families fund student education in Nursing.

Very difficult news to accept, but God knows best. I will always remember Sheeba for her kindness and compassion. She really cared. She was deeply righteous and very loyal. She was always truthful and had integrity. Yes, she was one of my favorite people at the VA. Jesus said, “I am resurrection and the life...” May the good Lord give strength and comfort to the husband, sons and entire family.

Sending Light and Love to the Paranilam family on the loss of Sheeba. We worked together at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, and I always admired her kindness, compassion, and empathy for her patients and for those around her. We found something other than work to chat about whenever we saw each other--namely music--tabla and sitar. When all the nurses wore white on their White Day, she wore the most beautiful eyelet sari--of course, the white uniform of her nursing school in India. The world is a chillier, darker place without her bright light shining forth. Pls accept my deepest condolences.

I got to know Sheeba only during the last 3 years. She was kind, compassionate and had a remarkable positivity and zest for life. She had great work ethic and always strived to do her best for patients. Her family meant the world to her, and she often talked about her loving sons and devoted husband. I cannot imagine how difficult this must for Sheeba's family, who experienced her warmth and love on a daily basis. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. Rest in peace, Sheeba. You left a lasting impression on many of us and you will never be forgotten.

Dear Sheeba, whenever I heard your name from our common friend, Alphonsa, your face came to my mind and your face always had a smile. We met a few times and talked on occasions and your positive spirit left good memories for me. So, I can only imagine what your dear ones are experiencing at this time of pain. My prayers for your family and friends. You had a purpose and you did well. Now, it is time for your eternal reward.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her! May the soul of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace

I am fortunate to know Sheeba Paranilam for so many years. She was an inspiration to so many in our community. Mr. Jose Paranilam considers me as his younger brother and I had special place in his family. I was blessed to hear confession of his parents as well as Sheba’s parents too. I was really blessed to talk to Sheeba, hear her confession and spend some time with her and the family during her final moments on this earth. We lost an inspiring person, but Heaven gained another angel. She is in a place where there is no more pain and struggle. We pray for her soul. Comfort and peace to Jose Chettan, Alex and Robin.

Together we shared a child’s world
We talked… we fought… we disagreed
We shared many hurts & joys
The older we grew, the stronger
The bond between us become
Though the journey of life put a gap between us
I was always so proud to have you as my little sister
Now life has taken us down to separate paths
You went early to Heaven, as you said once
Leaving behind all the loved ones
To rest in eternal peace with the Heavenly Father
Your departure is unbelievable…
I will never accept it…
I am not going to weep or mourn…
You will always live in my memories
Neither the span of miles
Nor years between us
Can ever change the feelings I have for you
I love you my dear little sis and the best friend,
as you wished me to be…

Sheeba – my friend! How can I say good-bye to you? We studied together for four years in College of Nursing (Calicut) and lived together in a hostel room as best friends and sisters! Those wonderful memories will last for ever! I remember you as a cheerful bright young lady full of energy and enthusiasm for life! You were a studious student that everyone looked upon to emulate. When we slept the night before the exam, you stayed awake and prepared for the exam. We were encouraged by watching your study habits. As we went our ways, you continued with that energy and enthusiasm for everything in life. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for everything you have done to make this world a beautiful place!

You will be deeply missed, my friend. Condolences to Jose, Alex, Robin, Ammachi and all other family members.

Dr. Sheeba Paranilam - Homage from IANAM
She was a dear daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, nurse
And many more were the hats she wore in life’s journey
A life so loved by many, cherished by manifold, taken away too soon
A compassionate nurse dedicated to her patients
Always a reason for pride and joy to near and dear ones

A soul full of purpose and love, high flying and zealous
Who lived a virtuous and righteous life
A leader so gentle, kind and compassionate,
Who held fast onto her dreams, took wings and flew
And accomplished all she put her heart into, winning many a laurels
A role model, mentor, comrade, teacher
A fighter so strong and resilient, a true warrior in life and death
Who showed fortitude in the face of darkest moments

If only we knew that that you would be gone too
If only we knew that was the last time we would see you smile,
If only we knew that was the last time we hugged you,
If only we knew that was the last time we would hear your voice
If only we knew that was the last time we took a picture together….
We would have done anything to get many more of those moments

Our hearts are broken, heavy, crushed and sore
Shattered, grief stricken and laden with sorrow
As the painful reality is sinking in
you left a void too large to fill, as you took a part of us with you
You were gone too soon, never did you let us say goodbye
Little did we know that God was going to call your name
And carry you to heaven so soon to start a life anew on that blissful shore
Devoid of pain and sorrow, with angels dancing around you
You gave us memories to cherish and your love will guide us through
You will be with us in spirit, until we meet again…….

Her Life
December 15, 2020
Dr. Sheeba Ouseph Paranilam passed away on December 13, 2020.

With compassion in her heart and service in her being, Sheeba always wanted to serve the sick and poor, and that desire led her to the nursing profession, which she began in India. She graduated from the College of Nursing Kozhikode in Kerala with a bachelors in 1992. She completed a master’s in nurse anesthesia in 2005 from Georgetown University, then a PhD in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2013. She continued her education and completed a master’s in business administration (MBA) from Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu, India in 2014.  She joined the team at the VA Maryland Health Care System in 2007 as a Nurse Anesthetist. Once asked what she found most challenging, she replied “The most challenging part of my job as a nurse anesthetist is to keep my most ill and elderly Veterans safe and comfortable by watching their every breath and every heartbeat in every second while they are entrusted to my care during anesthesia.”

She married Jose Paranilam on June 25, 1995, and immigrated to Maryland in the United States that same year. There, she joined with local Malayalees and contributed to organizing functions and activities to bring the community together. She became a central figure among Indian Catholics in Maryland and an executive member of Kairali of Baltimore. She brought her passion for Kerala culture and classical Indian dancing to area youths, and received many accolades for her talents. She was a nurturing force in the community and was able to be an early contributor in building St. Alphonsa Syro Malabar Catholic Church for local Indian Catholics.

She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. Her two boys, Alex and Robin, were her pride and joy. She instilled in them compassion for others and service with a full heart. Her husband, Jose, took pride in making her smile and helping her attend to the less fortunate. Together, they opened their doors to the community and welcomed many into their home. She was able to bring her parents and siblings to the United States and had a full heart when they were all together.

She left this Earth surrounded by her loved ones. As we reflect on the life she lived, we know that Heaven has received a faithful servant of God, the chorus of angels sing to accept her as their own.

She is survived by her husband Mr. Jose Paranilam, her mother Mrs. Sossa Ouseph Thekkiniath, her two sons Alex and Robin, her siblings Mr. Shabu Thekkiniath, Mr. Shaji Thekkiniath, and Mrs. Sheena Kanjirakadan, and their families.

One of the Best Aunts!

December 15, 2020
Sheeba Aunty gave birth to Alex a couple of months after my mom had given birth to me. Therefore, most of our childhood was spent together. Sheeba Aunty has always been a free spirited person and known for her positive energy. Sheeba Aunty and Jose uncle were always there for my family and made sure we never missed out on any opportunities in life. When I was younger, all the cousins would get together to go to the old house so that we could go swimming. I remember Sheeba Aunty would make so much food for all of us. One of my favorites was her teriyaki chicken. Another memory I have of Sheeba Aunty was when she would pick up me and achu to go to block buster with alex and Robin to pick out a movie and watch at their house. She would also take us to the movie theater and allow for us to get any snacks we wanted. I remember going with her to Little India and helping out at the store and looking at all the sarees.
Sheeba Aunty has always been an adventurous person. She would plan different trips for our families to take. She was really good at getting the whole family together and creating memories. Whether it was any six flags adventure, getting a coach bus to go to kings dominion and Canada, or even going on a cruise to Bermuda ... she definitely helped make our childhood more memorable. When I was a kid, I wanted to become a teacher. Therefore, I would play school with Robin and would pretend I was his teacher. This was before he even started pre-k. When Robin started school he was ahead of his class. Since then, every achievement Robin had received Sheeba Aunty would always say that I was his first teacher and would always thank me for what I taught him. But the thing is alex and Robin had a mom that set an example of excellence through her words and actions. She was their first teacher and one of the greatest teachers to have if I say so myself. She made all the cousins believe the sky was the limit and that we can achieve anything we set our minds to. She was so excited when I was about to start college and I decided to major in nursing. She helped me out with everything college related. She had a passion for nursing and helping others that she would try to persuade all of the cousins to choose a career in nursing as well.
Last year, when Jose uncle and Sheeba Aunty took a trip to India she had asked me to watch her two boys while she was gone. I told her of course and I promised that I would make sure that they did not get in to any trouble and were safe. Sheeba Aunty I know you are watching them from above, but I will still keep that promise in watching over your two boys.
To many she was Dr. Sheeba Paranilam, but to me she was just simply Sheeba Aunty. Someone I could go to for guidance. Someone who knew how to love with their whole heart. Someone who was a God Fearing woman. Someone who had accomplished so much in such little time that she was here. Someone who wanted the best for their family. Someone who would put others first before themself. Someone who led by example. Just someone who I look up to and want to be more like.

Middle School Movie Nights

December 15, 2020
When I was in middle school, on the weekends my mom would take us to the Blockbuster on Maiden Choice Lane. We would get takeout and rent movies to watch at home. She really liked family comedies. Some of her favorite movies were Nacho Libre, Get Smart, and Pink Panther.
