Was marriage always part of your plan? How did it happen?

"Yes!! The day of our wedding. It was 15 degress and I was trying to wash the car in the morning. After the wedding we went to Milwaukee for our honeymoon. And some jerks put stones in our hubcaps and is scared the heck out of us."

How long did you go out with mom?

"One year. we got engaged on her birthday, July 13th, 1947."

Do you rememberr the first time you asked mom out?

"A week after the wedding."

"The night before Uncle Dick and Auntie Vi's wedding. Your mom was washing walls."

"Baseball and football players."

What kind of studen were you as a kid?

"Pretty good at ties and again not so good. In the eight grade I had a spell of puppy love and came home with an 'F' on my report card. My mother wanted to kill me."

What were your teenage dating experiences?

"The Prom at St. Thomas School. I got stuck with a gilr Patricia Lawler who had a dozen brothers and sisters and when I went to pick her up the razzin I got."

What are your memories of being a teenager?

"We hung out at the Ice House on Rooselvelt Road and 30th Avenue. Luckily we never go in any real trouble. It could have happened."

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?"

"When I was a child you didn't have much choice. The day we graduated from high school, two day's later we were on the train for Milwaukee getting drafted into the armed services."

Did you ever get upset with your parents? Why?

"Yeah-- My mother was the boss--when I bought my first car, a 1948 Plymouth--she didn't appreciate the fact that I took the money out of the bank without her permission. I was 23 years old at the time!"

What were your brothers like when you were growing up?

"My brother Glen was king of the family. He could do no wrong. My brother Jim was the silent one and a miser, thank God, because he left most of his money to me and I was able to share with my family"

What was you sister like when you were growing up?

"She was like a big brother. We shared the same bedroom upsairs with no heat. She would take me out of the cirb and put me in bed with her to keep me warm."

What are some of your favorite memories of your mother?

"She was a terrific cook and good housekeeper."

What are your favorite memories of your father?

December 25, 2012

"We would go fishing at Lake Michigan for perch. We would go to his favorite saloon, Christ's Bar, and sell the fish to buy drinks. Also, my mom would send him to church and he would get as far as Christ's Bar. Coming home feeling gay, his old saying was, "it's better to be in a bar  thinking of church instead of being in church, thinking of a saloon."
