40-Day Memorial Speech by Laura Ghandour
(December 1, 2023, Vienna, Virginia) 

Bismillah Alrahman Alraheem, In the name of God, the most Gracious, the most merciful.

Hello everybody – I would like to thank all of you for coming today to show your love and respect for Sobhi and to share your condolences with me and our family. We have been comforted by the outpouring of love and care.
And I would really like to thank everyone in the family for your amazing love and support throughout this time. Thank you for being here today and for always being there for me. Special thanks the Dorn clan who flew in from Minnesota and Maine and Massachusetts and Florida to be here, and to the Hijazi and Tucker families for all your TLC. Sobhi loved all of you so much, and I am so blessed to call all of you my family.
I would also like thank the Vienna Community Center for graciously providing this space tonight and for all the help they provided with the many many events Sobhi hosted here over the years. You have always been wonderful to us, and we appreciate it immensely.
Finally, a special thank you to the members of the committee who put this memorial event together. I appreciate all of your hard work and generosity and time – Mohamed Said Al-Ouafe, Reem Khaldi, Bassem Yamak, Said Arikat, Omar Khaldieh, Mohamad Al-Arabi, Mohammed El-Shinnawi. You’ve made Sobhi proud.
To my deep regret, I never learned to speak Arabic. Because of that, despite how close Sobhi and I were, I know that there are big parts of his life and thought that I don’t fully comprehend. I appreciate that our speakers tonight can talk about those sides of Sobhi – they deserve to be shared. 
I would like to talk about Sobhi the man and my husband and our adventures with Al-Hewar Center.
Sobhi and I got married on August 18, 1988 – only two and a half months after our first date. We had an instant connection – we shared similar values, and a similar sense of humor, and we knew almost immediately that we were soul mates. When he asked me to marry him, I thought, what the heck, whatever happens, the ride will be worth it because he is such a wonderful person. And now, 35 years later, despite the tremendous pain of losing him, I can say unequivocally that the ride was amazing. He was a kind and generous husband and my best friend, and we always had each other’s backs. I am deeply blessed to have had him in my life, and I think many of you feel the same way. 
Sobhi and I started Al-Hewar Magazine featuring the Arab-American Dialogue in early 1989. It was a daring feat – as so many of Sobhi’s undertakings were. I was making about $18,000 a year at my job, and Sobhi had just left another start-up publication. So basically we were broke. I was very green, but willing, and Sobhi showed me the ropes. He had been a journalist since he was 16 years old, and by the time we met, he had helped numerous publications get off the ground. Through his sheer force of will plus some outside encouragement, including early subscriber Mr. Ibrahim El-Hibri, plus many many late nights, we managed to churn out issue after issue of Al-Hewar Magazine for 20 years. Sobhi was tireless about taking copies to hotel newsstands, bookstores, grocery stores, embassies, organizations, receptions, and anywhere else he could spread the word and develop a subscriber base.
The late, great Dr. Clovis Maksoud loved to share the story about how Sobhi hand-delivered the magazine to his house once -- right after a big blizzard in Washington -- on a day when even the post office and the Washington Post weren’t making deliveries. I was with Sobhi that day in our little stick-shift Honda Accord as he drove all over Washington, up and down icy, hilly, snow-covered roads to deliver the magazine. We had a few scares, but he was an excellent driver, and we got all of the issues delivered – mostly to places that were closed due to the blizzard! At least they had a surprise waiting for them the following day!
I think Clovis loved sharing that story because it encapsulated Sobhi so perfectly. He had talent and determination and he never gave up if he truly believed in what he was doing.
Five years after we founded the magazine, and after laying the groundwork with a series of meetings at IIIT headquarters with Arab community leaders, Sobhi started Al-Hewar Center because he wanted to bring people from all backgrounds together to really talk to each other. He believed in dialogue as the best way to solve problems. He established his principles of respectful dialogue and equal speaking opportunity before we even opened the doors of our first location in Vienna. Our first event took place in December 1994, right after another blizzard, I might add. We were moving in furniture during a snowstorm.
Nothing like Al-Hewar Center had ever been done, and people thought he was crazy and that it would never work, but Sobhi always had a very clear vision of what he wanted to achieve and what was possible. He also looked for the very best in people. In the early days, some attendees wanted to argue and shout and monopolize the time, but Sobhi persistently appealed to their better natures, and eventually got people to understand that it was okay to have different opinions, and it was okay to disagree with each other, as long as everyone had a chance to speak – and be heard -- and as long as the conversation remained respectful and moved the dialogue forward. He was a master host, often using his gentle sense of humor to defuse tense situations, and he always asked insightful questions and did his best to steer the conversations in a positive direction. Sobhi’s dream with Al-Hewar Center was to help unify the Arab World, beginning with the diverse Arab-American Community, so that they could reach consensus on important matters and ultimately control their own destinies. As we know, Sobhi and the entire Arab world, were up against much more potent plans and powers, and things have not really gone the way we hoped, especially after 9/11, which threw everything, everywhere, off its axis. The hurdles for the community became much higher that day, but Sobhi persisted until the end, and the community continues the struggle against ignorance, injustice, racism, and discrimination.
Sobhi and I finally became tired of blizzards, so we moved to Florida in 2017 to fulfill a long-time dream of living in a warmer place. Without missing a beat, Sobhi transferred Al-Hewar Center into a weekly online meeting via Zoom. This opened the Center discussions up to a whole new audience of people from overseas, allowing what he called the “style of dialogue” to spread to many more people and countries. Of course, this was especially fortuitous during COVID, when Al-Hewar Center continued seamlessly and even grew as on-line meetings became a lifeline for so many people during that time.
Sobhi hosted over 1,200 Al-Hewar Center events since it opened 29 years ago. We are grateful to the amazing retinue of speakers that we had the privilege to welcome over the years, from writers, journalists, and academics, to diplomats and activists, to religious and faith leaders, to strong women and eager youth, to everything in between. We have been inspired by your experience and knowledge.
Many people have mentioned to me how generous Sobhi was. It was one of his hallmark traits. I know this from first-hand experience of course. But I also wanted to share a little illustration. Every week or two for the many years that we lived in Virginia, Sobhi would go to downtown Washington DC and order 100 cheeseburgers from McDonald’s and take them, with cases of water, to the Community for Creative Non-Violence – the largest homeless shelter in the city. People would see his car and start lining up to receive their meal. True to his nature, he got them to line up in an orderly fashion because he wanted to make sure each person got a sandwich before anyone got seconds. The people at the shelter were always happy to see him, and they nicknamed him “Mr. Cheeseburger”. Nothing made Sobhi happier than giving to others – be it family members or friends or hungry strangers.
Since Sobhi passed away, I’ve been looking at a lot of photographs. The thing that I notice the most is that there is always a bright light shining in his eyes. He was so passionate about his work, so full of curiosity about everyone and everything, and he cared deeply about his family and his friends. He was full of life and gave all of his life and his energy to making things better for the people around him and for his wide circle of colleagues and acquaintances, for his adopted country of America, for his beloved Lebanon, and for the greater Arab World. The recent unfortunate events began in Palestine shortly before Sobhi passed, and to his chagrin he was too weak to write articles or give interviews about it. Throughout his life, he remained a true and dedicated advocate for the Palestinians and their right to live free, and many people were surprised that he was not speaking out on the subject. He had not told many people about his illness because he never wanted pity and he wanted to keep working and living his life until he no longer could. And that is what happened.
I had to put him in the hospital on a Wednesday morning, and he rang for the nurses every five minutes for 3 days pleading for them to let him go home because he wanted so desperately to host his Al Hewar Center event that Friday. The event had already been arranged and was to be a discussion about the situation in Gaza. On Friday, he had me run home and get his laptop so he could run the event from his hospital bed. We got the Zoom meeting all set up, but the hospital was just too noisy to hold the event. All of the meeting attendees agreed that we could and should have the event the next day at the same time. 
Sobhi was released from the hospital that evening into Hospice so I could take care of him at home, and he did, indeed, host the Al-Hewar Center event the next day. He gave a brief introduction and you could hear how weak he was. That was followed by an excellent presentation by Said Arikat and a good audience discussion. We recorded the event and posted it alongside the many other Center meeting recordings on our YouTube site. Sobhi knew it would be his last event, and I know he felt proud that, fittingly, it was an event to support the Palestinian people. 
During his last week on earth, I took care of him the best that I could. His nephew, Yasser Hijazi, made the long drive up from Miami every single day to visit his uncle and to help however he could. He brought us food, took Sobhi for walks in his wheelchair, prayed with him and for him, and gave him every manner of loving care. Yasser continues to check in on me and my Mom regularly. Yasser – we are forever grateful for your help and care during that time and now. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 
In addition, Yasser’s wife, Carla, came and spent a week with me after Sobhi passed. Carla – thank you for your tender loving care – you kept me calm and helped me find a bit of peace during the worst time of my life. You are a wonderful and cherished friend.
And a special thanks to my Mom, who lives around the corner from me – you have given me so much love and a soft place to land. I cherish your advice, understanding and loving care. Now we know why God guided you to move to Florida.
I understand that there have been numerous tributes and memorials for Sobhi both in the states, and in Lebanon, and for that I am truly grateful. He was a special man who gave everything he had to help make things better for others. It warms my heart to see the love and respect that he garnered from around the world.
Sobhi’s family in Lebanon asked me to thank all of you for being here today and to tell you that Sobhi is missed by the entire family and will be missed as long as we live, yet he remains vividly present in our minds and souls. He also will be remembered because of the great body of work that he leaves behind. His values and principles and dedication will be recognized and cherished always, and we are and will always be so proud that he is a very very dear member of our family.
As for myself, I am very proud to be Sobhi’s wife and helpmate. He was a blessing in my life, and I know he helped me to become a better person. We will all miss his love and intelligence, his wonderful sense of humor, his indomitable spirit, his occasional stubbornness, his constant generosity. He helped many people in many ways, and touched innumerable lives. Sobhi, we will remember you and your great spirit forever. God bless your soul.
And may God bless all of you. Thank you.

Dear Laura,

The death of Sobhi was such a shock and left a big void behind, yet knowing how closely you worked together and being familiar with his optimistic and open spirit I know his work will find its way to growth. Yet, what a loss! His open mindedness, his accute journalistic perceptions cannot be replaced. May God bless his soul, Allah Yerhamo, we do miss him and we were always aware of the privilege it is to have Al-Hewar as part of our lives.

I was there around the table at the opening founding meeting of Al-Hewar so many years ago... Sobhi Ghandour’s spirit will always be in this place. 

He served his community with the utmost devotion and his efforts to make this a better world will haunt all efforts he set in motion towards a world of harmony and understanding.

أقام المركز الوطني للدراسات أمسية وفاء تأبيناً لعضو قيادة المؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني ومدير مركز الحوار العربي في واشنطن الإعلامي الراحل صبحي غندور، وذلك في دار الندوة في الحمرا-بيروت، حضره حشد من الشخصيات السياسية والإعلامية والإجتماعية ورفاق درب الفقيد. 

بعد الوقوف دقيقة صمت وقراءة الفاتحة عن روح الفقيد وشهداء فلسطين ولبنان، أدار الأمسية عضو مجلس بيروت في المؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني الدكتور فواز الحسامي، مرحباً بالحضور، ومتحدثاً عن علاقته مع الراحل الكبير والتي تمتد من اواخر ستينات القرن الماضي، مستذكراً أبرز المحطات التي عايشه فيها من معركة المعادلات للشهادات العربية بالشهادة اللبنانية، مروراً بإدراة تحرير مجلة الموقف، وصولاً لتأسيس مركز الحوار العربي في واشنطن.
 
ثم كانت كلمة رئيس مجلس إدارة دار الندوة النائب والوزير السابق بشارة مرهج ألقاها الإعلامي ديب حجازي، فرحب بالحضور في هذا اللقاء الأخوي حول شخصية عربية لعبت دوراً مهماً في الحياة الثقافية العربية وصاحبة موافق جريئة وعملت على نشر الوعي العربي والفكرة العربية وخدمة القضية الفلسطينية في كل مكان وبخاصة في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، مشدداً على أنه بالرغم من الحزن على رحيل الدكتور صبحي غندور، فإن إرثه حافل بالعطاء، وأسمه سيبقى منارة للاجيال القادمة.
 
تم تحدث رئيس تحرير جريدة اللواء صلاح سلام، فقال إن الحديث عن صبحي غندور يعود بنا بالذاكرة إلى أيام النضال الوطني والقومي الذي كنا نغالب فيه الطموح المستحيل في تحقيق أحلام الوحدة العربية. لقد كان صبحي يميل دائماً إلى الحوار مع الآخر ولو من موقع مختلف بحثاً عن المشترك بما يخدم الوطن، وعندما تعطلت لغة الحوار في لبنان، غادر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأميركية فنشط في الدفاع عن قضايا العرب في الأوساط الأميركية، وساهم من خلال مركز الحوار في نشر مفاهيم الثقافة العربية، وعمل من خلال المركز للرد على الحملات العنصرية ضد العرب والمسلمين، مشدداً على أن العزيز صبحي غادرنا إلى دنيا الحق لكن ذكراه باقية في قلوبنا.

نقيب المحررين جوزيف القصيفي إستذكر العلاقة التي جمعته بالراحل منذ مطلع السبعينات، عندما كان النقيب عضواً في حركة الوعي وصبحي غندور عضواً في إتحاد قوى الشعب العامل حيث تعاونا لغرس قواعد الإلتقاء حول قيم جامعة توحد لا تفرق تحت شعار الوحدة الوطنية الشعبية التي كانت تشبه لبنان في تكوينه وتنوعه، مشدداً على أن المتابع لمسيرة الراحل الوطنية الفكرية والإجتماعية والإعلامية يتوقف عند صفات صبحي في التهذيب والإحترام للآخر والإيمان بالحوار والحرية وإنفتاحه على الآراء، وهو الذي بقي طوال حياته داعياً للعروبة بمعناها الحضاري ومواجها للوبي الصهيوني ومدافعاً عن قضية فلسطين، فكان لوبياً عربياً قائماً بذاته.

وفي تسجيل صوتي، قال رئيس أساقفة سبسطية للروم الارثوذكس في فلسطين المحتلة المطران عطا الله حنا: لقد عرفت صبحي غندور منذ سنوات في خلال الندوات التي كنت أشارك فيها في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، كما شاركت في ندوات مركز الحوار العربي عبر تطبيق الزوم. الصديق صبحي شخصية عروبية يعتبر القضية الفلسطينية قضية الأمة وكل الأحرار، مشدداً على أن فلسطين والقدس لن ينسوك.

ثم القى الشاعر الأمير طارق آل ناصر الدين قصيدة مما جاء فيها: 
اتصمت أنت يا صبحي؟ عجيب                         إذا إستحل الكلام فمن يجيب
أحكامي؟ وهم خرسٌ وطرشٌ                           وأصنامٌ وأتباعٌ تعيبُ!
جمال نسرنا العربي ولى                                  وولى بعده الزمن الخصيبُ
ومن رضعوا من الكاوبوي شحاً                         أيرجى منهم الرأي المصيبُ؟

كلمة مدير عام تلفزيون المنار الحاج إبراهيم فرحات ألقاها بالنيابية عنه الإعلامي محمد شري الذي قال: عرفت صبحي غندور من خلال الصحافة وشاشة المقاومة، فكان الضيف العزيز العارف والمفكر والملتزم بقضايا الوطن والأمة المنفتح على القيم الاخلاقية والإنسانية الأصيلة، مدركاً لعدوه الحقيقي المتجسد بالكيان الصهيوني وداعمه المتمثل بالولايات المتحدة الاميركية. كانت نظرته واضحة ان جوهر المشروع العربي النهضوي يتمثل بمقاومة الإحتلال الصهيوني، وأن لا حرية ولا ديمقراطية من دون هذه المقاومة.

ثم كانت كلمة للرئيس السابق للجامعة اللبنانية الوزير السابق الدكتور عدنان السيد حسين، فقال إن صبحي غندور كان متحرراً من الفئوية الطائفية، ومتخلٍ عن لوثة المذهبية المدمرة، صادق مع طرحه لأنه مؤمن بقضية الإنسان العربي ولبنان المعذب، مشدداً على أن الدعوة العربية تحتاج لدعاة مثل صبحي غندور الذي كان يقبل بالرأي الآخر ويحاجج بعقلانية وبالبرهان العلمي، وإن فقدانه خسارة للعمل والفكر العربي، وهو واحد من الذين إخترقوا عالم الغرب بإنسانيته وفكره والتزامه بقضايا وطنه وأمته.

الخبير في الشؤون التركية الصحافي محمد نورالدين وصديق الراحل قال: في وداع صبحي غندور نودع من شرب العقيدة وهو فتى من مفردات زعيمها الخالد جمال عبد الناصر. كان صبحي بشخصه ومركز الحوار العربي الذي أسسه لوبياً بكل معنى الكلمة، وأكثر تأثيراً من كل اللوبيات العربية الخادعة المزيفة، فكان نضب العروبة في كل الولايات المتحدة، وكان فلسطينياً، عربياً إنسانياً، تقدمياً، ديمقراطياً، فكان بإختصار العروبة الحقة. لقد كان صبحي المناضل بالكلمة والموقف وأصبح شهيداً على طريق القدس وفلسطين.

ثم تحدث الأمين العام لحزب الإتحاد النائب حسن مراد فقال: لم اعرف المرحوم الكبير صبحي غندور على المستوى الشخصي لكني عرفته بحواراته دفاعاً عن فلسطين و لبنان والمقاومة والعروبة، وعرفته محللاً ومفكراًعربياً ناصرياً.. لقد نجح حين اخفق كثير غيره، نجح في استقطاب اجيال الى مؤسسة فكرية ناصرية كنا و لا زلنا نعتبرها قاعدة فكرية لهذا التيار في مرحلة من اخطر المراحل التي كانت تهدد الخط الوطني في هذا البلد. رحل صبحي غندور جسداً ولكن مثله لا يرحل الا بالجسد، فبقيت افكاره وراءه خالدة ما دام في كل جسد عربي نفس، رحل ولم ير الصمود الاسطوري الذي تقوم به المقاومة اليوم في غزة.. سنفتقد وتفتقد فلسطين ولبنان والامة ويفتقد الخط القومي العربي الناصري برحيل الاخ صبحي، مناضلاً من طراز رفيع ومقاوماً بحقٍ في وجه طواغيت الظلام، ومثقفاً كان مدرسة ايمانية في مواجهة المشاريع الاستعمارية.

كلمة رئيس الهيئة القيادية لحركة الناصرين المستقلين- المرابطون العميد مصطفى حمدان القاها بالنيابة الأستاذ محمد قليلات فقال: لقد أدرك صبحي منذ الثمانينات ان التيار العروبي الناصري مستهدف، فهاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة ليؤسس مركز الحوار ليكون وسيلة ضغط في صميم الإدارة الأميركية. لقد آمن صبحي إيماناً قوياً بأن الجماهير هي القوة الحقيقة وأن الوحدة العربية تحققها القوى الشعبية وهذا ما تعمل له القوى الناصرية في لبنان والعالم العربي لإستنهاض روح وحدتها في مواجهة المؤمرات التي تحاك ضد أمتنا العربية.
  
كلمة عائلة الفقيد ألقتها ابنة شقيقته السيدة غادة حجازي، فقالت: لقد اقتنع صبحي بمبادئ ناصر الأمة، وعمل جاهدًا منذ ريعان شبابه حتى اللحظات الأخيرة من عمره دفاعًا عن هذه المبادئ وعن القضيّة المركزيّة للعرب، فلسطين. لقد كان خالي
مُشبعا بالنضال، صادقًا صدوقًا، مخلصًا محبًا، ملتزمًا عهده ووعده. بجهده الانساني ساهم بنشر مبادئ ثورة 23 يوليو الناصرية، وبنى مؤسّسة عربيّة تفاعليّة نحتاجها جميعنا، غايتها الإقناع بالحوار، او على الأقل معرفة رأي الآخر وتقدير هذا الرأي. متقدمةً باسمها وباسم جميع افراد العائلة، بالشكر للمؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني قيادة وأعضاء على ما قاموا به لتخفيف المصاب الجلل الذي أصابنا، كما شكرت المركز الوطني للدراسات على تنظيم هذا اللقاء التأبيني، والمتحدثين لنبل مشاعرهم وصدق عواطفهم.

ختام الكلمات مع كلمة مدير المركز الوطني للدراسات عدنان برجي فقال: عرفتك منذ أكثر من خمسة عقود، وكنت أكثرَنا نشاطًا، وأعمقَنا فكرًا، فزاوجت بين الفكر والعمل، بين الدعوة والممارسة، بين القيادة والإخوّة. تميزّتَ بإصرارٍ عنيد على أن لا مستحيل أمام إرادة الإنسان. عندما بدأتَ مسيرتَك الإعلاميّة تحولت لمؤسسة تدريبيّة لجيل الشباب من الإعلاميين. لم تكن مجلّة "الموقف" هي إنتاجُك الإعلاميّ الوحيد، بل كنت المكتب الإعلامي لاتّحاد قوى الشعب العامل، ثم للمؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني، وكنتَ دار النشر الذي أصبح لاحقًا المركز الوطني للدراسات، فكنتَ تشرفُ على إصدار الكتيّبات والكراريس والبيانات والمذكّرات، وهي ثروة إعلاميّة تشكلُّ مرجعيةً للعمل المؤسّساتي الشعبي الحر والمستقل. أما تجربُتك في مركز الحوار على مدى ثلاثة عقود، فإنها تتكلّم عن نفسها، فيكفي لمن لا يعلم أن يزورَ موقع الحوار على الإنترنت ليُدرك كم هو إرثك الفكري والنضالي غنيّ الى أبعد الحدود.

With heavy hearts, the Board of Directors and staff of The Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development, along with the Palestine Center, mourn the loss of Sobhi Ghandour. His impactful journey as a journalist was marked by a steadfast commitment to shedding light on Arab issues and fostering a nuanced understanding of the Arab World.
Mr. Ghandour’s legacy includes the founding of the Al-Hewar Center in Washington, D.C., a vital institution that challenged biased narratives and offered a platform for often silenced Arab and Palestinian perspectives. This center became an essential hub for dialogue and knowledge exchange about the region’s issues and affairs.
A true friend to The Jerusalem Fund and Palestine Center, Mr. Ghandour consistently advocated for our initiatives. His unyielding support propelled our work, and his immense contribution to the Palestinian cause resonated within and beyond our organizations. His advocacy was especially poignant amid the troubling dehumanization of Arabs and Palestinians, a struggle that makes voices like his profoundly missed.
As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate Mr. Ghandour’s enduring legacy. His dedication to promoting understanding and justice will continue to inspire our mission and guide our future endeavors. Brother and friend Sobhi Ghandour left us after suffering from an incurable illness that did not last long. He and I, knew that his illness was not curable, but he did not want anyone to know about his illness, as he did not want pity and sadness from anyone. I was encouraging him and trying to instill confidence in himself and encourage him to live with full activity and what he offers through his weekly seminar on Arab issues, especially the issue of the Palestine.
May God have mercy on Sobhi, he was a distinguished person, educated, gentle, an interesting modernizer and a diligent activist, who devoted his life to serving Arab causes.
May God mercy you brother Sobhi and enter you in Paradise and reward you for what you have offered in your life. We will miss you, and your memory will always remain in our hearts.

صدق الله العظيم
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
تلقينا والجالية العربية والإسلامية في أمريكا والعالم الخبر المؤسف في يوم الجمعة العشرين من تشرين الأول عام 2023م بفقدان المرحوم صبحي غندور مدير مركز الحوار العربي بمنطقة واشنطن. ولقد عرفته منذ أكثر من ثلاثون عاما كأخ وصديق ورجل ومناضل ومفكر ورائد وعلم عروبي وطني سخر كل حياته من أجل الحق والمبادئ والقيم والأخلاق والوطنية المبنية على العدالة والضمير الحي. وكان رغم تألقه كالشمعة التي تحترق لتنير الضوء الى دروب الحق والقيم والمبادئ والعدالة. وكان مترفعا بكل شهامة ورجولة عن كل مطامع الدنيا وبريقها ووقف صامدا صلدا ومتألقا كشعلة للحق وبالرغم من كل الظروف الصعبة والمآسي التي مرت وتمر بالأمة العربية من ظلم وانكسارات ونكبات سواء كانت داخليا أو خارجيا مجسدا مقولة:
" بدلا من لعن الظلام أبقى صامدا برفع شعلة الحق والتنوير ضد الباطل"
نعم يا أخي وصديق الدرب المرحوم العزيز صبحي أنك لم تخسر الرهان فقد صنعت عبر هذه الرحلة. المئات من المواقف المشرفة والمشرقة بصحوة فكرية وقومية ووطنية بروابط قوية بين الشرفاء والوطنيين من أبناء هذه الأمة العربية والإنسانية بعيدا عن مستنقع الهروب من المسؤولية القومية والوطنية والأخلاقية والاستسلام بعيدا عن مستنقع الطائفية والقطرية وعقد العبودية والخوف من الآخر المستبد.. ولقد جسدت بحق الجوهر الحقيقي لفهم الأيمان الصحيح وهو واجبنا في عمل الخير والبناء وليس الشر والهدم وعدم الاستسلام والخنوع والخضوع للباطل ولأنه هو الجهاد الحقيقي الذي أمرنا به الله ووفق كل الأديان السماوية والرسل والأنبياء.
إخوتي الأحبة:
نلتقي اليوم وكلكم من محبي وأصدقاء المرحوم صبحي، سواء عرفتموه في مركز الحوار عندما كانت تنعقد ندواته الأسبوعية في فرجينا (A٧) أو عبر نافذته الأسبوعية بحواراتها عبر الإنترنت بعد انتقاله وعائلته للسكن في فلوريدا (FL)؛ والتي كانت أخرها بشأن المأساة الإنسانية التي يشهدها شعبنا الفلسطيني في غزه. حيث وبرغم من وجعه وألمه الصحي وتواجده في المستشفى للعلاج بسببها من أخطر ما يمر به إنسان وهو يصارع الحياة والموت من أخطر ورم في الرئة، ولكنه أصر على الخروج من المستشفى لكي يقيم ندوة خاصة عن مأساة شعبنا الفلسطيني في غزه وما تمر به الملايين من ماسي إنسانية. اقل ما نقول عنها أنها وصمة عار في وجه الإنسانية والحضارة وكل القوانين والأعراف الدولية ومبادئ وقرارات الأمم المتحدة ومن ازدواجية المعايير الظالمة بالنظر بعين واحدة الى الحقيقة المرة والتي لم يشهدها العالم منذ مئات السنين. وقبل ادعاءات تحضر الأمم والإنسان وما استفادوه من تجارب الحروب والماسي، والتي أخرها الحربين العالمية الأولى والثانية والتي أخرجت لنا الأمم المتحدة بقوانينها الإنسانية والحضارية المفترضة، ومنظماتها ومنها منظمة حقوق الإنسان والتي تؤكد كلها على حرية وآدمية الإنسان وعدم السماح بالمساس بها مهما كانت الظروف. ولكن، ومع شديد الأسف، كلها تقف وتتجمد عندما تتعلق بالإنسان العربي والفلسطيني بشكل خاص من ازدواجية المعايير ولكي نكون عادلين كانت هنالك أصوت قليله شريفة ونبيلة ومن كل بلدان العالم الظالمة، وكذلك من كل منتسبي الأديان السماوية، كانت مع الحق وضد الظلم الصادر من حكامهم.
ومع ذلك، في الحقيقة، وبرغم من الم المعاناة من كل ذلك، إلا أنى وفي الوقت الذي أقرف واشمأز من ادعاءات دول العالم المتقدم والمدعية الحضارة عندما تتعامل مع حقوق العرب والقضية الفلسطينية بكل دونيه وعدم احترام، إلا أنى أحمل كل المسؤولية للحكام والملوك والسياسيين العرب، ومن يرقص ويغني لهم من رجال إعلام ودين، في عدم تحملهم مسؤولية الدفاع عن شعوبهم وحقوقهم والاستسلام للآخر دون قيد أو شرط رغم توفر كل الإمكانيات - من قوى اقتصادية و بشرية وجغرافية وعسكرية مجتمعة - والتي لا يملكها أي شعب آخر في الكرة الأرضية، وبعدم استخدامها بشكل أمثل، ليس مع شعوبهم فقط، بل مع أعداهم والذين يعملون على استعبادهم وإذلالهم. فكيف نطالب الآخر مهما كانت القيم والمبادئ التي يجب أن يتمتع بها أصحابها وكيف نطلب من الآخر العدل معنا وان يكونوا ملكيين أكثر من الملك! وان يقولوا كلمة الحق والعدل معنا وهم يرون الأمة العربية والإسلامية وقد جعلوهم حكامها جثث هامدة وعبيد؟ ولماذا ينصفون العرب وحكامهم لا ينصفون شعوبهم، وجعلوهم أحجار وعبيد بلا حراك ولا فعل ولا عمل!
ولماذا يخسروا الآخر الظالم والمعتدي وهم لا يخشوا من أي ردة فعل من قبل العرب وحكامهم بشأن حقوقهم؟ ولأن حكامهم جعلوهم أموات بلا حراك. نعم الحل كل الحل يبدأ من عندنا نحن العرب والمسلمين في الدفاع عن حقوقنا والتعامل مع الآخر أي كان. وكل حسب عمله وموقفه منا سياسياً واقتصادياً وإعلاميا وعسكرياً. وعندها فقط سيفكر الآخرين (كل الآخرين) ألف مرة قبل الاصطفاف مع أعداء الأمه العربية والمسلمة الظلمة -- وسوف يحسبونها بالعقل الاقتصادي: كم سوف يربحون وكم سوف يخسرون في معاداة الحق العربي! نعم يجب أن نفیق حكام العرب من نومهم وسباتهم، ويجب أن تمارس الأمه العربية وشرفاءها الضغط والهزات على حكامهم ليوقظوهم من هذا السبات. وبالتالي سوف نرى فجراً جديداً، وأمل أفضل للأجيال العربية القادمة، ومستقبل زاهر بدون ظلم وماسي من قتل وفقر وتهجير وإذلال. وستعود الأمه العربية مره أخرى خير أمة أخرجت للناس، تأمر بالمعروف وتنهي عن الباطل والمنكر. وبالتالي سنكون وليس كنتم عندما نعود إلى أصول الإيمان، ومنها أصل ومبدأ العدل الذي ألغته وغيبته السياسة عن اصول الإيمان الإلهي لأنه المعيار والميزان للأصول الثلاثة الأخرى، والتي بها نكون قد صححنا بوصلتنا نحو الهدف الصحيح والأسمى في حياتنا الدنيا.
إخوتي الأفاضل الأعزاء - أتقدم بإسمي ونيابة عنكم ببالغ الحزن والأسى وخالص التعازي الى الأخت لورا زوجة المرحوم صبحي ورفيقة عمره. وكانت كالجندي المجهول في تعضيد وسند المرحوم بكافة مجالات الحياة وأعباءها. صبرها الله على ما فقدت بوفاة المرحوم صبيحي. كما أكرر التعازي الى كافة أهل الفقيد، سواء في لبنان أو غيره، من أخوة وأخوات وأقارب وأصدقاء وأحباء المرحوم.
وصبرنا الله جميعا على هذه الخسارة. ولكن يواسينا أيماننا بانه كسب رهان الآخرة، وهي الأبقى. وفاز بوعد الله بفسيح جناته لأنه شهيد كلمة الحق ضد الباطل، والتي أفنى كل حياته من أجل ذلك.
أخي الحبيب المرحوم صبحي: نم قرير العين فقد فتحت المزيد من الينابيع وقنوات الري للمياه العذبة ولسقي زهور الحق ضد الباطل والشر. أخي العزيز صبحي رحمك الله في الدار الآخرة ومكانك فيها كما وعدنا الله وهو الحق بالجنة. ولأنك بعت الحياة الدنيا ومطامعها واشتريت بها الآخرة ويومها الأبقى. فأنتم السابقون ونحن اللاحقون إن شاء الله.

On Friday, the 20th of October 2023, we received the unfortunate news of the loss of our late friend Sobhi Ghandour, director of the Center for Arab Dialogue in Washington. I have known Sobhi for more than thirty years as a brother, friend, fighter, thinker, pioneer and a renown Arab patriot, who devoted all his life to the sake of truth, principles, values, morals and patriotism based on justice and conscience. His brilliance shined like a candle that burnt to illuminate the paths of truth, values, principles and justice. He was exalted with all magnanimity and valor from all the ambitions and luster of the world and stood steadfast, solid and glowed as a torch of truth. And despite all the difficult circumstances and tragedies that the Arab nation has gone through, and is going through, from injustice And setbacks and calamities, whether internal or external, embodying the saying:
"Instead of cursing the darkness, remain steadfast by raising the flame of truth and enlightenment against falsehood."
Yes, my dear late friend, Sobhi, my brother and my companion along the path of life, indeed you did not lose the bet, as you had taken through this journey hundreds of honorable and bright positions informed by intellectual, patriotic, and national awakening while maintaining strong ties between the honorable and patriotic sons of this Arab nation and the wider humanity. Yet, Sobhi stayed away from the quagmire of escaping from national and moral responsibility and never surrendered to the swamp of sectarianism and narrow nation-state concerns, nor did h succumb to the slave mentality or fear of the tyrannical other. Sobhi had truly embodied the true essence of understanding true faith, which is our duty to do good and be constructive, not to do evil, destruction, and to never surrender, submit to falsehood. For this is the true jihad that Allah commanded us to carry out, per the teachings of all monotheistic religions, messengers and prophets.
Dear brothers:
We meet today with all of you who are fans and friends of the late Sobhi, whether you knew him at the Dialogue Center during his weekly seminars that were held in Virginia, or through his weekly portal via online dialogues after he and his family moved to Florida, the latest of which was about the human tragedy that our Palestinian people are suffering in Gaza. Sobhi did this despite his pain and health challenges and from his hospital bed while receiving treatment for a grave condition. His was concerned about the Palestinians at a moment when he was fighting for his life! Despite his personal battle against a most dangerous tumor in the lung, Sobhi insisted on being discharged from the hospital in order to hold a special seminar on the tragedy of our Palestinian people in Gaza and the human tragedies that millions are going through.
To say the least, what is happening in Gaza is a stain on humanity, civilization, all international laws and norms, and the principles and resolutions of the United Nations. Not to mention the unjust double standards of staring with one eye at the bitter truth. The world has not seen such a tragedy for hundreds of years. Before accepting the alleged civilization of nations and of man, or that lessons were learned from the experiences of wars and catastrophes, the most recent of which were the First and Second World Wars, which brought us the United Nations with its supposed humanitarian and civilized laws, and its various organizations, including the Human Rights Organization, all of which emphasize the freedom and humanity of man and not to allow them to be violated under any circumstances. But, with great regret, all of them stand and freeze when they concern the Arabs, and the Palestinian people in particular. They freeze from double standards. But to be fair, there were a few honest and noble voices from all the unjust countries of the world, as well as from all the followers of the monotheistic religions, who stood with the truth and against the injustice meted by their rulers.
However, in fact, despite the pain of suffering from all this, while I am disgusted and sickened by the claims of the s-called developed world countries and the pretenders of civilization when they deal with the rights of Arabs and the Palestinian cause with utmost disrespect and supremacist attitude.
I put all the responsibility on the Arab rulers, kings and politicians, and those who dance and sing to them, including the Arab media and clerics. I hold them guilty for not bearing the responsibility of defending their peoples and their rights and surrendering to the other unconditionally, despite the availability of immense aggregate resources: economic, human, geographic, and military.
Few other people command such huge resources! Alas, these resources are not used optimally, not for the benefit of their own people nor against their enemies and those who enslave and humiliate them. Given this, how can we demand anything from the other, no matter what values and principles they espouse? How can we ask the other to be just with us and be more royal than the king! Or to demand they speak out the truth and be just to us when they see the state of the Arab and Islamic nations and witness how their rulers have made their peoples lifeless corpses and slaves? Why would outsiders do justice to the Arabs while the Arab rulers do not do justice to their own people, whom they transformed into inanimate stones and slaves without agency, incapable of action or deed?
Why would they lose the other oppressor and aggressor when they do not fear any reaction from the Arabs and their rulers about the abuse of their rights? Especially, when their rulers have made them dead and motionless! Yes, the solution, the sole solution, starts from us, Arabs and Muslims, by defending our rights and dealing with the other, whoever that other might be. We must deal with each nation according to its deed and its political, economic, media, and military stance towards us. Only then will others (all others) think a thousand times before aligning with the injustice of the enemies of the Arab and Muslim nations. The others will then calculate with economic reason: how much they will gain and how much they will lose if they display hostility to the rights of the Arab! Yes, we must wake up the Arab rulers from their sleep and slumber, and the Arab nation and its honorable people must exert pressure and send tremors under their rulers to wake them up from this slumber. Only then we will see a new dawn, better hope for future Arab generations, and a prosperous future without injustice and tragedy of killing, poverty, displacement and humiliation. The Arab nation will once again return to being the best nation among humans, enjoining good and forbidding falsehood and evil. Thus, we will be, and not has been, when we return to the true origins of faith, including the origin and principle of justice, which was abolished and absented by politics from the principles of divine faith. This is because justice is the criterion and the balance of the other three tenets, by which we have corrected our compass towards the right and supreme goal in our worldly life.
Finally, my dearest esteemed brothers: On my behalf and on your behalf, I extend my deep sorrow and sincere condolences to our sister, Laura, wife of the late Sobhi and his companion throughout his life, who was the best loyal wife and the twin of his soul. She was like the unknown soldier in supporting the deceased in all areas of life and sharing with him its burdens. May God grant her patience and resilience as she deals with her great loss, the passing of her husband, Sobhi. I also reiterate my condolences to all the family of the deceased, whether in Lebanon or elsewhere, including brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.
And may Allah help us all endure this great loss. What comforts us is our belief that he won the bet of the hereafter, which is the more lasting. He won Allah’s promise of His paradise because he was a martyr of the truth against falsehood, a fight for which Sobhi had dedicated his whole life.
My beloved brother, the late Sobhi: Rest in peace my dearest. You had opened more springs and irrigation channels of fresh water to spray the flowers of truth against falsehood and evil. My dear brother Sobhi, may Allah have mercy on you in the hereafter and may your place in His paradise, as Allah promised and He forever speaketh the truth. And because you had exchanged the worldly life and its ambitions and instead opted for the hereafter and its everlasting day. You went ahead, and Allah willing, we are to follow.

خواطر حول الموت والحياة
صبحي غندور

* رغم أن الموتَ واحدٌ مهما تعدّدت أسبابه وشاملٌ الأحياء جميعًا على هذه الأرض .. فإنّ الموت كما الأحياء متنوّعٌ في حالاته ومعانيه ..
* البعض أمواتٌ في عطائهم للحياة رغم أنّهم أحياء ..
والبعض أحياءٌ في عطائهم للحياة رغم أنّهم موتى ..
* البعض يحيا عند الآخرين أكثر حين يموت كما لم يكن معهم حيًّا قبل الموت ..
* وإذا كان الموت حالة جبرية حتمية لا خيار للإنسان فيها، فإنّ الحياة هي تلك المسافة من الزمن التي ينعم فيها كل إنسان بحقّ الاختيار وبالقدرة على صنع القرار:
الاختيار هو لكيفيّة عيش هذه المسافة الزمنية، أي مسافة الحياة، مهما اختلفت أمكنة العيش. والقرار هو في تحمّل مسؤولية هذا الاحتيار.
* البعض يختارون في رحلة حياتهم قضاء حاجات النفس فقط، والبعض الآخر يختار قضاء حاجات الناس ويعطونها أولوية على حاجات النفس، فيحبّون الخير والخير يحبّهم.
* بعض الناس يعبد الحياة لا من منح الحياة لهم ..
وبعضٌ آخر يقضي حياته كلها في عبادة مانح الحياة.. والبعضُ القليل يدرك ويتعلّم حكمة الخلق فيزكّي نفسَه لكنّه يرى الإيمان أو العبادة صنوان للعمل الصالح في الحياة بما يتجاوز النفس ويشمل الآخر، أيًّا يكن هذا الآخر ، ومن أيِّ جنسٍ أو لونٍ أو دين أو مذهب ينتمي إليه هذا الآخر.
قال تعالى:
"تباركَ الذي بيدِهِ المُلكُ وهو على كلِّ شيءٍ قدير، الذي خلَقَ الموتَ والحياةَ ليبْلوَكُم أيّكُمْ أحسنُ عمَلًا، وهو العزيزُ الغفور"

Dearest Uncle Sobhi
You may not be with us here anymore but hopefully you'll know how much we miss you and wish you well. I thank God for the peace you went with, and I hope from God's utmost Grace you have won! And that your grave will a part of paradise. I hope you got to see our beloved Nabil and all our beloved ones who left us before you. May you all be with the most beloved Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his generous family. We leave you all in the custody of God subhanahu, He who does not lose His belongings, the Most Merciful. Insha'Allah we will meet you at the Prophet's (PBUH) basin bi-ithn'Allah.

غاب رجل الحوار صبحي غندور...من يحمل رايته؟

هو فارسٌ من فرسان العروبة الحضاريَة الجامعة، حمل قضيّة الأمّة في عقله وقلبه منذ ان تفتّح وعيه السياسي، وكان لا يزال فتىً يافعًا على مقاعد الدراسة في دار المعلّمين يوم أصدر كتيبيًا فكريًّا حمل عنوان الناصرية ثورة قوى الشعب العامل في سبيل الحرية والاشتراكية والوحدة، وتضمن ان الثورة تقاس بمدى شعبيتها وتقدميتها.
انتسب الى التنظيم الناصري – اتحاد قوى الشعب العامل، وكان أصغر أعضاء مكتبه السياسي (في الخامسة عشر من العمر). استوعب باكرًا وعميقًا نظرية الثورة العربية للمفكر الكبير الدكتور عصمت سيف الدولة، وكان مسؤولًا عن لجان العمل الثانوي الناصري، ولجان العمل التعليمي الناصري، ثم في مرحلةٍ لاحقة كان مشرفًا على اتّحاد الشباب الوطني إحدى مؤسّسات المؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني الذي كان يرأسه الأخ كمال شاتيلا.
سهر على إصدار مجلة الموقف وتطويرها من نشرة تٌطبع على آلة بدائية تسمى"الستناسل" الى مجلة أسبوعية مرخّصة تصدر بالألوان، وتعالج قضايا فكرية وسياسية واجتماعية، وكان رئيس تحريرها ومديرها المسؤول، وعلى يديه تدرّب صحافيون وإعلاميّون ومخرجون فنيون ورسامّو كا ريكاتور، انتشروا في بلادٍ عربيّة واغترابية، وبعضهم تبوأ مراكز إعلاميّة متقدّمة في صحفٍ كبيرة. وكان عضوًا في نقابة المحرّرين اللبنانيين.
بعد العدوان الصهيوني الغاشم على لبنان عام 1982، وبعد أن عايش هذا العدوان ونتائجه على مدى سنتين متتاليتين تنامت فيها بشكل كبير المشاعر الطائفية، ترسّخت لديه قناعة ان الدفاع عن القضية العربية لا يمكن أن يبقى داخل جدران الأمّة، فذهب في منتصف عام 1984 الى الولايات المتّحدة الأميركية، الى ولاية نيو جرسي بداية، حيث أشرف لمدّة على صدور صحيفة "الاعتدال" التي كان يخطط لإصدارها لفترةٍ طويلة رجل الأعمال السوري المرحوم عبد الله طحان، ثم انتقل بعد فترة وجيزة إلى ميتشيغن حيث عمل على إصدار جريدة "صدى الوطن" كأوّل صحيفة عربية أسبوعية تصدر باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية وتُنشَر في عدّة ولايات على مستوى أميركا الشمالية، بتمويل من صديق قديم له هو المهندس اللبناني أسامة السبلاني.
عاد إلى لبنان لفترة ثم عاد من جديد في العام 1987 إلى واشنطن وكان المرحوم ملحم كرم قد اشترى مجلة "الحوادث" التي كانت تصدر في لندن، فأشرف الأخ صبحي على إدارة أعمال مكتبها ومراسلتها الأسبوعية من العاصمة الأميركية .
في ربيع العام 1989 أنشأ مجلة "الحوار" الشهرية التي كانت تصدر باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية، وكانت أوّل مطبوعة عربية تصدر في العاصمة الأميركية، وكانت مدماكًا فكريًّا لكلّ العروبيّين لغِنى المقالات والدراسات والأبحاث والمواضيع التي تناولتها طيلة فترة إصدارها ورقيًا ثم إلكترونيًّا.
وفي الذكرى الخامسة لتأسيس مجلة الحوار، وبعد سنوات شهدث لقاءات فكرية، بناءً لمبادرة منه، مع شخصيات وهامات فكرية وعلمية ودينية في واشنطن، اختمرت لديه فكرة إطلاق "مركز الحوار العربي"، الذي كان يقيم ثلاث ندوات أسبوعية باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية، وقد أتاح هذا المركز منذ نشأته المجال للمفكّرين العرب للالتقاء والتحاور وتبادل الأفكار.
عمل "مركز الحوار العربي" دفاعًا عن قضايا عربية هامّة داخل المجتمع الأميركي لحوالي ثلاثة عقود، وكانت مطبوعاته ومنشوراته الإلكترونية تصل إلى أعداد كبيرة من المؤسّسات الأميركية والناشطين الأميركيين والعرب في مجالاتٍ وأمكنة مختلفة.
ساهم "مركز الحوار" كذلك، في الجانب الفكري والثقافي والإعلامي، بالعرض السليم للثقافة العربية وللهُوية العربية ولمضامين الحضارة الإسلامية التي يشترك بها كل العرب، وبالردّ على الحملات العنصرية ضدّ العرب والمسلمين داخل المجتمع الأميركي، والإسهام في خدمة القضايا العربية المشتركة، وفي مقدّمتها القضية الفلسطينية، داخل المجتمع الأميركي والغرب عمومًا، من خلال الندوات والنشرات الدورية باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية عبر الإنترنت ووسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.
ولقد حمل "مركز الحوار" منذ تأسيسه دعوة عربية توحيدية تدعو للتكامل بين العرب بدلًا من التفرّق، وإلى صون التراث الحضاري والاعتزاز بالانتماء العروبي بدلًا من العصبيات الإقليمية والطائفية والإثنية، وأحدثت هذه الدعوة على مرِّ السنوات الماضية تأثيرًا ايجابيًّا واضحًا في أكثر من مجال ومع أكثر من شخص ومؤسّسة في أمكنة وبلدان مختلفة.
وحافظ "مركز الحوار العربي" طيلة 28 عاماً، منذ تأسيسه في 18/12/1994، على منطلقه كمنتدى فكري ثقافي عربي مستقل، دون تمييز على أساس خصوصياتٍ وطنية أو دينية أو إثنية. كما حافظ على أسلوبه كساحة حوار عربي تتفاعل فيها الآراء وتختلف دون خلاف بين الأشخاص، وحافظ على هدفه المتجسد في تعزيز الهويّة العربية وفي تحسين المشاركة العربية في الحياة السياسية - فكراً وأسلوباً - داخل المجتمع الأميركي وخارجه. ومن يدخل الى موقع مركز الحوار العربي على الإنترنت يكتشف الكنز الفكري الذي أنتجه الأخ صبحي ووضعه ذخيرةً لكلّ الشباب القومي العربي.
تميّز الأخ صبحي بحواره الهادئ والمقنع، والبعيد عن الغوغائية والاستفزاز الرخيص، وبتحليلاته السياسية التي كانت تستبق أحيانًا الأحداث، سواء في مقالاته أم في إطلالاته الإعلامية على العديد من شاشات التلفزة. وكان محاورًا بارعًا بأسلوب هادئ مقنع،يحترم آراء من يخالفونه بالرأي ويطبّق على نفسه المبادئ التي وضعها بنفسه للتحاور في مركز الحوار.
تميَّز أيضًا بالوفاء الكبير والإخلاص لتجربة الزعيم الراحل جمال عبد الناصر وأفكاره ومبادئه، ولذكراه، وذكرى كل الراحلين الذين عرفهم الأخ صبحي خلال مسيرته الفكرية والنضالية. وتميّز كذلك بطيب الخلق والمعشر وبدفء اللسان، وبالمرح، والتواضع، والبعد عن الأنانية والانتهازية، وكان يمقت بشدة النميمة والطعن في الظهر. اهتم اهتمامًا كبيرًا بهموم عائلته وأصحابه ومعارفه وعمل دومًا على حلّ مشاكلهم وكأنه موجودٌ أبدًا معهم. تميز بالكرم والإحسان رغم ضيق ذات اليد، وبالتفاني في العطاء من أجل الوطن والأمّة، ودومّا على حساب عائلته وراحته الشخصية.
سهر الأخ صبحي على مركز الحوار العربي وأداره بإبداع وديمقراطية في اختيار المواضيع والمتحدّثين، ونظّم مئات الندوات الإسبوعية حضوريًّا، ثم عبر تطبيق برنامج زوم بعد انتشار جائحة كورونا.
وقام هذا المركز على جهد الأخ صبحي الشخصي والدؤوب دون تمويل من أي جهة عربية كانت أم أجنبية. كان الاعتماد فقط على الاشتراك الشخصي، والاشتراكات كما يعلم كل من يتعاطى الشأن الإعلامي لا تؤمّن سوى الحدّ الأدنى من متطلّبات الاستمرار.
تجاوز عدد ندوات مركز الحوار العربي الحضورية في منطقة واشنطن الألف، وكذا عدد مقالاته التي كانت تنشر في كبريات الصحف العربية. . ووصل عدد الندوات الإلكترونية التي أقامها بعد جائحة كورونا إلى 267 ندوة أون لاين. وكان آخرها حول الأوضاع في فلسطين، التي أحب وناصر قضيتها بصدق وإخلاص طيلة مسيرة حياته، وكان دومًا يرى المقاومة السبيل الوحيد للتحرير، فسجّل التقدير والفخر والاعتزاز بالمقاومة وأبطالها. وقد أصرّ على إجراء هذه الندوة من على سريره بالمستشفى، ولمّا حالت صعوبات تقنية دون ذلك أصرّ على العودة إلى البيت لإقامتها في اليوم التالي لتاريخها أي في 14 أكتوبر 2023 بدلًا من يوم 13.
كان دائم الحضور الإعلامي عبر شاشات التلفزة وأثير الإذاعات العربية والدولية، وكان موضوعيًّا في حواراته ونقاشاته، وكان المدافع الشرس عن القضايا العربية، والناقد الموضوعي والعلمي للتوجّهات الأميركية والأطلسية. ولم يتوقّف عن تنظيم الحوارات بين مفكّرين عرب على الرغم من الأوجاع التي سببها المرض الخبيث الذي أصابه.
لم يتسلّل اليأس يومًا الى نفسه، ولم تغب قضية وطنه لبنان عن باله، فبقي مدافعًا شرسًا عن وحدته وحرّيته وعروبته واستقلاله، وكان صوت المقاومة بكل حرّية ومن دون تبعية لأيٍّ كان.
كان داعية بكلّ ما للكلمة من معنى. وكان جسرًا بين العروبيّين المقيمن والعروبيّين المغتربين. وكان صلة الوصل بين مناضلين تعرّفوا الى بعضهم البعض من خلال ندواته الهادفة دائمًا.
خسارته لا تعوّض بشخص ولا بمجموعة، لقد كان مؤسّسة قائمة بذاتها، وقلما يجنّد إنسان نفسه لخدمةٍ عامّة ويستمرّ طيلة حياته على هذا المنوال بكل عزّة نفس وكرامة وإباء.
سنذكره بقلوبنا، وبعقولنا، فله عندنا ذكرٌ لا يُمحى إلا بانقضاء آجالنا، ويبقى الذكر بعد ذلك لكل من قرأ له واستمع إليه واشترك معه في ندوةٍ أو لقاء أو حوار، وكل من عرفه وتعرّف إلى مبادئه الأصيلة طيلة مسيرته النضالية على مدار خمسة عقود من الزمن.

نعى نقيب المحررين جوزف القصيفي الصحفي صبحي غندور قائلا: قامة وطنية، عربية، فكرية واعلامية رحلت وهي في غربة جسدية عن لبنان الذي ظل نابضا في وجدانها، ماثلا في قلبها وعقلها وجعا لا يستكين .
وتابع القصيفي ، صبحي غندور، الصحافي والباحث الذي عرفته وسائل الإعلام كاتبا ملتزما، مؤمنا بالحوار والحرية، والمعاهد الأكاديمية في الولايات المتحدة باحثا موثوقا لم تغب عنه الرصانة يوما. انتسب إلى نقابة محرري وكان صديقا ودودا لكل من عرفه، ولو خالفه الرأي.
وختم نقيب المحررين ، تفتقد الصحافة اللبنانية والعربية برحيل غندور وجها من وجوه الزمن الاجمل، زمن النقاء النضالي، والأحلام الكبيرة التي اجهضتها المصالح الدولية والاقليمية المتعارضة والمناضلة. لقد كان على خلق رفيع، وعلى قدر عال من التواضع والادب والتعاطي الودود مع كل الذين عرفوه.
كما نعت قيادة «المؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني»، الصحافي صبحي محمد غندور، وجاء في بيان النعي: «الاخ الحبيب الغالي الأخ صبحي غندور فارس من فرسان العروبة الحضارية الجامعة، حمل قضية الأمة في عقله وقلبه منذ ان تفتح وعيه السياسي، وكان لا يزال فتى يافعا على مقاعد الدراسة في دار المعلمين يوم أصدر كتيبا فكريا بعنوان «الناصرية ثورة قوى الشعب العامل في سبيل الحرية والاشتراكية والوحدة».
وختم البيان: «سنذكره بقلوبنا، وبعقولنا، اننا اذ ننعى الاخ المناضل والمفكر والداعية العروبي صبحي غندور، نتقدم من عائلته الكريمة ومن كل الاتحاديين والعروبيين والناصريين على امتداد لبنان والامة والعالم، بكل مشاعر العزاء سائلين الله سبحانه وتعالى أن يتغمده بواسع رحمته ويسكنه فسيح جناته».

I am saddened by the news of Dr. Sobhi's passing. I extend my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to you all.
I never had the honor of meeting Dr. Sobhi in person, despite him being my father's first cousin, but I always felt that I knew him well. I had great respect and admiration for him and his work that i followed closely. Always felt very proud whenever I watched him or listened to him talk.
I am so sorry for your/our loss. May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace.

لقد عرفت الاستاذ العلامة منذ سنوات قليلة وكنت اتابع مقالاته الصادرة من مركز الحوار العربي.
اعجبت بكتابات المرحوم فتشجعت وراسلته مباشرة ولم يخيب ظني به واصبحنا أصدقاء
فكر ونهج مشترك. وكنت قد وعدت نفسي ان القاه في واشنطن ولكن لم تسمح الاقدار لنا. 
الدكتور صبحي فقيدة كبيرة ليس لاهله ولذويه فقط ولكن لامة ألعرب قاطبة وما احوجنا له
ولامثاله في هذه الأيام الحالية العصيبة.

Sobhi's Eulogy by Adnan Burji -October 29
أخي الحبيب صبحي غندور
جئنا صغارًا نحملُ آمالًا كبارًا، جمعتنا عقيدة قائدٍ خالد، لخّص دروس التاريخ، وقرأ في أبعاد المخطّطات الدوليّة والإقليميّة، وحمل رسالة العروبة الحضاريّة الجامعة، وتعاهدنا ضمن مدرسة اتحاديّة غرست فينا أكثر فأكثر جميل القيم، وجمال النضال المُبرّأ من كلّ غاية دنيئة.
كنتَ أكثرَنا نشاطًا، وأعمقَنا فكرًا، ومتقدّمًا علينا في حركتك النضاليّة التي زاوجت بين الفكر والعمل، بين الدعوة والممارسة، بين القيادة بما تعني من مسؤوليّة، وبين الإخوّة بما تعني من تقارب عفويّ دون تكليف ودون تصنّع.
تميزّتَ بإصرارٍ عنيد على أن لا مستحيل أمام إرادة الإنسان حين يقدر على دفع ضريبة التضحيات. وإصرارك هذا لم يكن مجرّد تشبّثٍ بالرأي، فزاوجت بين الإصرار والمبادرة الطليقة، وعملتَ بجهدٍ انسانيّ استثنائيّ، لتحقيق ما أقدمت عليه. هكذا كنتَ في دار المعلّمين واحدًا من فتيةٍ متقدّمٍ على غيره بالقدرة على الحوار، والإقناع، والمتابعة، وبناء العلاقات، فكنتَ خيرَ من يوصل الفكرة وخيرَ من يؤثّر في الآخرين، وهكذا انتشرت الفكرةُ بين معلّمي الأجيال الذين كانوا ينتشرون في المناطق الّلبنانيّة كافة ما أن يتخرّجوا من الدار.
كتابُك الأول أصدرتُه في 15 كانون الثاني( يناير) 1971 وأنت على مقاعد الدراسة في دار المعلّمين الإبتدائية، وعمرُك حينَها لا يتجاوز الخمسة عشر عامًا، اعطيتُه عنوان : "الناصريّةُ ثورة قوى الشعب العامل في سبيل الحريّة والاشتراكيّة والوحدة". قلتَ فيه:" إن الطريق الثوريّ هو الجسر الوحيد الذي تتمكن به الأمّة العربيّة من الانتقال بين ما كانت عليه وما تتطلّع اليه..... وأضفتَ: ان الثورة العربيّة تحتاج الى أن تسلّح نفسها بقدراتٍ ثلاث، تستطيعُ بواسطتها ان تصمدَ لمعركة المصير التي تخوضها اليوم...... وهذه القدرات الثلاث هي:
1- الوعي القائم على الاقتناع العلمي النابع من الفكر المستنير والناتج عن المناقشة الحرّة التي تتمرّد على سياط التعصّب أو الإرهاب.
2- الحركةُ السريعة الطليقة التي تستجيب للظروف المتغيّرة التي يُجابهها النضال العربي، على أن تلتزم هذه الحركة بأهداف النضال وبمثله الأخلاقيّة.
3- الوضوح في رؤية الأهداف ومتابعتها باستمرار، وتجنب الانسياق الانفعالي الى الدروب الفرعيّة التي تبتعد بالنضال الوطني عن طريقه وتهدر جزءًا كبيرًا من طاقته".
ولعَمري فما رأيتُك يومًا بعيدًا عن الالتزام بهذه القدرات الثلاث، وكأنّها أصبحت جزءًا من شخصيتك، او لكأنّ شخصيتك هي التي تحملُ في جيناتها هذه القدرات وغيرها.
بدأتَ مسيرتَك الإعلاميّة بإشراف الأخ المؤسّس المغفور له كمال شاتيلا وأخوانه في القيادة، وأنت أصغرُهم، بإصدار نشرة الناصريّة بخطّ اليد مسحوبة على آلة بدائيّة هي "الستناسل"، ثم طوّرت طباعتها على " الدكتيلو"، ثم أخرجتها باللونين الأخضر والأسود، وسريعًا أصدرتها مجلّة اسبوعيّة بالألوان.
لقد كنتَ في الحقيقة أكثر من مدير مسؤول ورئيس تحرير لمجلة أسبوعية. لقد كنتَ مؤسسة تدريبيّة لجيل الشباب من الإعلاميين، مُحرّرين ومُخرجين وفنيّين وموزّعين ومسوّقين لجلب الإعلانات أو لجلب الاشتراكات.
وكم كنتُ أراك فرحًا بعد إقفال " العدد" اي إعداده فنيًا وإرساله الى المطبعة التي كانت تعمل بصفّ الأحرف، وكنتُ أنا واحدًا من الذين شاركوا أحيانًا في تصحيح الأخطاء المطبعية في المطبعة. كانت فرحتُك وفرحتُنا، بعد يوم نضالي طويل في أكثر من موقع ومجال، نترجمُها عشاءً متأخّرًا بل ترويقةً مبكرةً في مطعم مرّوش قبالة الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، حيث كان يفتح أبوابه ليل نهار على الرغم من الحرب الأهلية المريرة.
لم تكن مجلّة "الموقف" هي إنتاجُك الإعلاميّ الوحيد، بل كنت المكتب الإعلامي لاتّحاد قوى الشعب العامل، ثم للمؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني، وكنتَ دار النشر الذي أصبح لاحقًا المركز الوطني للدراسات فكنتَ تشرفُ على إصدار الكتيّبات والكراريس والبيانات والمذكّرات، وهي ثروة إعلاميّة تشكلُّ مرجعيةً للعمل المؤسّساتي الشعبي الحر والمستقل.
قيمُك النضاليّة والأخلاقية حملتَها أمانة في عنقك، فكنت الوفيّ الصادق، المخلص، المُضحّي المعطاء، المبادر، المترفّع عن كلّ صغيرة، حتّى أنّ إحدى الصحف عنونت يوم رحيلك: " رحل رجل الحوار فمن يحمل الرسالة بعده".
أعذرني ، أخي وصديقي ورفيق نضالي على مدى أكثر من خمسة عقود، فقد كتبتُ عن مرحلة قد تكون معروفة لقلّة لكنها مجهولة لكثير من أصدقائك وإخوانك الذين اكتسبتهم بدماثة خلقك ونبل تعاطيك، بل ربّما كسبوا هم، وأنا منهم، أكثر مما اكتسبت منهم.
تجربُتك في مركز الحوار على مدى ثلاثة عقود، تتكلّم عن نفسها، فيكفي لمن لا يعلم أن يزورَ موقع الحوار على الإنترنت ليُدرك كم هو إرثك الفكري والنضالي غنيّ الى أبعد الحدود.
في جنّات الخلد يإذن الله. وجهك غيّبُه الموتَ لكن صوتُك لا زال يرنُّ في ذهني وانت تحثَّني على استنباط أفكار تتيح للشباب الصاعد أن ينخرط في العمل العروبي الصادق والجامع، ففي ذلك ضمانة لتواصل مسيرة العمل الثوري الذي بدأتَه وبدأناه في مقتبل العمر.
أخيرًا لا بدّ من رسالة إعلاميّة لك وللإخوة الذين سبقوك الرحيل ، من أنّ مسيرة تحرير فلسطين تتقدّم خطواتٍ كبيرة الى الأمام فدمُ الشهداء، من الأطفال والشيوخ والنساء والمقاتلين الأشاوس، سوف ينتصرُ على السيف في غزّة كما انتصر في لبنان، وسيأتي يوم التحرير قريبًا بإذن الله.
لسنا على فراقٍ يا اخي، وسنواتُ البعدِ لن تكون طويلة، حتّى نجتمع في رحاب الخالق العظيم وفي رحمته، وعسى أن تكون ونكون مع الأتقياء والأنقياء من عباده. إنّا لله وانّا اليه راجعون ولا حول ولا قوّة إلا بالله.

Almighty Allah Speaketh Truth
We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return
On Friday, the 20th of October 2023, we received the unfortunate news of the loss of our late friend Sobhi Ghandour, director of the Center for Arab Dialogue in Washington. I have known Sobhi for more than thirty years as a brother, friend, fighter, thinker, pioneer and a renown Arab patriot, who devoted all his life to the sake of truth, principles, values, morals and patriotism based on justice and conscience. His brilliance shined like a candle that burnt to illuminate the paths of truth, values, principles and justice. He was exalted with all magnanimity and valor from all the ambitions and luster of the world and stood steadfast, solid and glowed as a torch of truth. And despite all the difficult circumstances and tragedies that the Arab nation has gone through, and is going through, from injustice And setbacks and calamities, whether internal or external, embodying the saying:
"Instead of cursing the darkness, remain steadfast by raising the flame of truth and enlightenment against falsehood."
Yes, my dear late friend, Sobhi, my brother and my companion along the path of life, indeed you did not lose the bet, as you had taken through this journey hundreds of honorable and bright positions informed by intellectual, patriotic, and national awakening while maintaining strong ties between the honorable and patriotic sons of this Arab nation and the wider humanity. Yet, Sobhi stayed away from the quagmire of escaping from national and moral responsibility and never surrendered to the swamp of sectarianism and narrow nation-state concerns, nor did h succumb to the slave mentality or fear of the tyrannical other. Sobhi had truly embodied the true essence of understanding true faith, which is our duty to do good and be constructive, not to do evil, destruction, and to never surrender, submit to falsehood. For this is the true jihad that Allah commanded us to carry out, per the teachings of all monotheistic religions, messengers and prophets.
Dear brothers:
We meet today with all of you who are fans and friends of the late Sobhi, whether you knew him at the Dialogue Center during his weekly seminars that were held in Virginia, or through his weekly portal via online dialogues after he and his family moved to Florida, the latest of which was about the human tragedy that our Palestinian people are suffering in Gaza. Sobhi did this despite his pain and health challenges and from his hospital bed while receiving treatment for a grave condition. His was concerned about the Palestinians at a moment when he was fighting for his life! Despite his personal battle against a most dangerous tumor in the lung, Sobhi insisted on being discharged from the hospital in order to hold a special seminar on the tragedy of our Palestinian people in Gaza and the human tragedies that millions are going through.
To say the least, what is happening in Gaza is a stain on humanity, civilization, all international laws and norms, and the principles and resolutions of the United Nations. Not to mention the unjust double standards of staring with one eye at the bitter truth. The world has not seen such a tragedy for hundreds of years. Before accepting the alleged civilization of nations and of man, or that lessons were learned from the experiences of wars and catastrophes, the most recent of which were the First and Second World Wars, which brought us the United Nations with its supposed humanitarian and civilized laws, and its various organizations, including the Human Rights Organization, all of which emphasize the freedom and humanity of man and not to allow them to be violated under any circumstances. But, with great regret, all of them stand and freeze when they concern the Arabs, and the Palestinian people in particular. They freeze from double standards. But to be fair, there were a few honest and noble voices from all the unjust countries of the world, as well as from all the followers of the monotheistic religions, who stood with the truth and against the injustice meted by their rulers.
However, in fact, despite the pain of suffering from all this, while I am disgusted and sickened by the claims of the s-called developed world countries and the pretenders of civilization when they deal with the rights of Arabs and the Palestinian cause with utmost disrespect and supremacist attitude.
I put all the responsibility on the Arab rulers, kings and politicians, and those who dance and sing to them, including the Arab media and clerics. I hold them guilty for not bearing the responsibility of defending their peoples and their rights and surrendering to the other unconditionally, despite the availability of immense aggregate resources: economic, human, geographic, and military.
Few other people command such huge resources! Alas, these resources are not used optimally, not for the benefit of their own people nor against their enemies and those who enslave and humiliate them. Given this, how can we demand anything from the other, no matter what values and principles they espouse? How can we ask the other to be just with us and be more royal than the king! Or to demand they speak out the truth and be just to us when they see the state of the Arab and Islamic nations and witness how their rulers have made their peoples lifeless corpses and slaves? Why would outsiders do justice to the Arabs while the Arab rulers do not do justice to their own people, whom they transformed into inanimate stones and slaves without agency, incapable of action or deed?
Why would they lose the other oppressor and aggressor when they do not fear any reaction from the Arabs and their rulers about the abuse of their rights? Especially, when their rulers have made them dead and motionless! Yes, the solution, the sole solution, starts from us, Arabs and Muslims, by defending our rights and dealing with the other, whoever that other might be. We must deal with each nation according to its deed and its political, economic, media, and military stance towards us. Only then will others (all others) think a thousand times before aligning with the injustice of the enemies of the Arab and Muslim nations. The others will then calculate with economic reason: how much they will gain and how much they will lose if they display hostility to the rights of the Arab! Yes, we must wake up the Arab rulers from their sleep and slumber, and the Arab nation and its honorable people must exert pressure and send tremors under their rulers to wake them up from this slumber. Only then we will see a new dawn, better hope for future Arab generations, and a prosperous future without injustice and tragedy of killing, poverty, displacement and humiliation. The Arab nation will once again return to being the best nation among humans, enjoining good and forbidding falsehood and evil. Thus, we will be, and not has been, when we return to the true origins of faith, including the origin and principle of justice, which was abolished and absented by politics from the principles of divine faith. This is because justice is the criterion and the balance of the other three tenets, by which we have corrected our compass towards the right and supreme goal in our worldly life.
Finally, my dearest esteemed brothers: On my behalf and on your behalf, I extend my deep sorrow and sincere condolences to our sister, Laura, wife of the late Sobhi and his companion throughout his life, who was the best loyal wife and the twin of his soul. She was like the unknown soldier in supporting the deceased in all areas of life and sharing with him its burdens. May God grant her patience and resilience as she deals with her great loss, the passing of her husband, Sobhi. I also reiterate my condolences to all the family of the deceased, whether in Lebanon or elsewhere, including brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.
And may Allah help us all endure this great loss. What comforts us is our belief that he won the bet of the hereafter, which is the more lasting. He won Allah’s promise of His paradise because he was a martyr of the truth against falsehood, a fight for which Sobhi had dedicated his whole life.
My beloved brother, the late Sobhi: Rest in peace my dearest. You had opened more springs and irrigation channels of fresh water to spray the flowers of truth against falsehood and evil. My dear brother Sobhi, may Allah have mercy on you in the hereafter and may your place in His paradise, as Allah promised and He forever speaketh the truth. And because you had exchanged the worldly life and its ambitions and instead opted for the hereafter and its everlasting day. You went ahead, and Allah willing, we are to follow.

إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
تلقينا والجالية العربية والإسلامية في أمريكا والعالم الخبر المؤسف في يوم الجمعة العشرين من تشرين الأول عام 2023م بفقدان المرحوم صبحي غندور مدير مركز الحوار العربي بمنطقة واشنطن. ولقد عرفته منذ أكثر من ثلاثون عاما كأخ وصديق ورجل ومناضل ومفكر ورائد وعلم عروبي وطني سخر كل حياته من أجل الحق والمبادئ والقيم والأخلاق والوطنية المبنية على العدالة والضمير الحي. وكان رغم تألقه كالشمعة التي تحترق لتنير الضوء الى دروب الحق والقيم والمبادئ والعدالة. وكان مترفعا بكل شهامة ورجولة عن كل مطامع الدنيا وبريقها ووقف صامدا صلدا ومتألقا كشعلة للحق وبالرغم من كل الظروف الصعبة والمآسي التي مرت وتمر بالأمة العربية من ظلم وانكسارات ونكبات سواء كانت داخليا أو خارجيا مجسدا مقولة:
" بدلا من لعن الظلام أبقى صامدا برفع شعلة الحق والتنوير ضد الباطل"
نعم يا أخي وصديق الدرب المرحوم العزيز صبحي أنك لم تخسر الرهان فقد صنعت عبر هذه الرحلة. المئات من المواقف المشرفة والمشرقة بصحوة فكرية وقومية ووطنية بروابط قوية بين الشرفاء والوطنيين من أبناء هذه الأمة العربية والإنسانية بعيدا عن مستنقع الهروب من المسؤولية القومية والوطنية والأخلاقية والاستسلام بعيدا عن مستنقع الطائفية والقطرية وعقد العبودية والخوف من الآخر المستبد.. ولقد جسدت بحق الجوهر الحقيقي لفهم الأيمان الصحيح وهو واجبنا في عمل الخير والبناء وليس الشر والهدم وعدم الاستسلام والخنوع والخضوع للباطل ولأنه هو الجهاد الحقيقي الذي أمرنا به الله ووفق كل الأديان السماوية والرسل والأنبياء.
إخوتي الأحبة:
نلتقي اليوم وكلكم من محبي وأصدقاء المرحوم صبحي، سواء عرفتموه في مركز الحوار عندما كانت تنعقد ندواته الأسبوعية في فرجينا (A٧) أو عبر نافذته الأسبوعية بحواراتها عبر الإنترنت بعد انتقاله وعائلته للسكن في فلوريدا (FL)؛ والتي كانت أخرها بشأن المأساة الإنسانية التي يشهدها شعبنا الفلسطيني في غزه. حيث وبرغم من وجعه وألمه الصحي وتواجده في المستشفى للعلاج بسببها من أخطر ما يمر به إنسان وهو يصارع الحياة والموت من أخطر ورم في الرئة، ولكنه أصر على الخروج من المستشفى لكي يقيم ندوة خاصة عن مأساة شعبنا الفلسطيني في غزه وما تمر به الملايين من ماسي إنسانية. اقل ما نقول عنها أنها وصمة عار في وجه الإنسانية والحضارة وكل القوانين والأعراف الدولية ومبادئ وقرارات الأمم المتحدة ومن ازدواجية المعايير الظالمة بالنظر بعين واحدة الى الحقيقة المرة والتي لم يشهدها العالم منذ مئات السنين. وقبل ادعاءات تحضر الأمم والإنسان وما استفادوه من تجارب الحروب والماسي، والتي أخرها الحربين العالمية الأولى والثانية والتي أخرجت لنا الأمم المتحدة بقوانينها الإنسانية والحضارية المفترضة، ومنظماتها ومنها منظمة حقوق الإنسان والتي تؤكد كلها على حرية وآدمية الإنسان وعدم السماح بالمساس بها مهما كانت الظروف. ولكن، ومع شديد الأسف، كلها تقف وتتجمد عندما تتعلق بالإنسان العربي والفلسطيني بشكل خاص من ازدواجية المعايير ولكي نكون عادلين كانت هنالك أصوت قليله شريفة ونبيلة ومن كل بلدان العالم الظالمة، وكذلك من كل منتسبي الأديان السماوية، كانت مع الحق وضد الظلم الصادر من حكامهم.
ومع ذلك، في الحقيقة، وبرغم من الم المعاناة من كل ذلك، إلا أنى وفي الوقت الذي أقرف واشمأز من ادعاءات دول العالم المتقدم والمدعية الحضارة عندما تتعامل مع حقوق العرب والقضية الفلسطينية بكل دونيه وعدم احترام، إلا أنى أحمل كل المسؤولية للحكام والملوك والسياسيين العرب، ومن يرقص ويغني لهم من رجال إعلام ودين، في عدم تحملهم مسؤولية الدفاع عن شعوبهم وحقوقهم والاستسلام للآخر دون قيد أو شرط رغم توفر كل الإمكانيات - من قوى اقتصادية و بشرية وجغرافية وعسكرية مجتمعة - والتي لا يملكها أي شعب آخر في الكرة الأرضية، وبعدم استخدامها بشكل أمثل، ليس مع شعوبهم فقط، بل مع أعداهم والذين يعملون على استعبادهم وإذلالهم. فكيف نطالب الآخر مهما كانت القيم والمبادئ التي يجب أن يتمتع بها أصحابها وكيف نطلب من الآخر العدل معنا وان يكونوا ملكيين أكثر من الملك! وان يقولوا كلمة الحق والعدل معنا وهم يرون الأمة العربية والإسلامية وقد جعلوهم حكامها جثث هامدة وعبيد؟ ولماذا ينصفون العرب وحكامهم لا ينصفون شعوبهم، وجعلوهم أحجار وعبيد بلا حراك ولا فعل ولا عمل!
ولماذا يخسروا الآخر الظالم والمعتدي وهم لا يخشوا من أي ردة فعل من قبل العرب وحكامهم بشأن حقوقهم؟ ولأن حكامهم جعلوهم أموات بلا حراك. نعم الحل كل الحل يبدأ من عندنا نحن العرب والمسلمين في الدفاع عن حقوقنا والتعامل مع الآخر أي كان. وكل حسب عمله وموقفه منا سياسياً واقتصادياً وإعلاميا وعسكرياً. وعندها فقط سيفكر الآخرين (كل الآخرين) ألف مرة قبل الاصطفاف مع أعداء الأمه العربية والمسلمة الظلمة -- وسوف يحسبونها بالعقل الاقتصادي: كم سوف يربحون وكم سوف يخسرون في معاداة الحق العربي! نعم يجب أن نفیق حكام العرب من نومهم وسباتهم، ويجب أن تمارس الأمه العربية وشرفاءها الضغط والهزات على حكامهم ليوقظوهم من هذا السبات. وبالتالي سوف نرى فجراً جديداً، وأمل أفضل للأجيال العربية القادمة، ومستقبل زاهر بدون ظلم وماسي من قتل وفقر وتهجير وإذلال. وستعود الأمه العربية مره أخرى خير أمة أخرجت للناس، تأمر بالمعروف وتنهي عن الباطل والمنكر. وبالتالي سنكون وليس كنتم عندما نعود إلى أصول الإيمان، ومنها أصل ومبدأ العدل الذي ألغته وغيبته السياسة عن اصول الإيمان الإلهي لأنه المعيار والميزان للأصول الثلاثة الأخرى، والتي بها نكون قد صححنا بوصلتنا نحو الهدف الصحيح والأسمى في حياتنا الدنيا.
إخوتي الأفاضل الأعزاء - أتقدم بإسمي ونيابة عنكم ببالغ الحزن والأسى وخالص التعازي الى الأخت لورا زوجة المرحوم صبحي ورفيقة عمره. وكانت كالجندي المجهول في تعضيد وسند المرحوم بكافة مجالات الحياة وأعباءها. صبرها الله على ما فقدت بوفاة المرحوم صبيحي. كما أكرر التعازي الى كافة أهل الفقيد، سواء في لبنان أو غيره، من أخوة وأخوات وأقارب وأصدقاء وأحباء المرحوم.
وصبرنا الله جميعا على هذه الخسارة. ولكن يواسينا أيماننا بانه كسب رهان الآخرة، وهي الأبقى. وفاز بوعد الله بفسيح جناته لأنه شهيد كلمة الحق ضد الباطل، والتي أفنى كل حياته من أجل ذلك.
أخي الحبيب المرحوم صبحي: نم قرير العين فقد فتحت المزيد من الينابيع وقنوات الري للمياه العذبة ولسقي زهور الحق ضد الباطل والشر. أخي العزيز صبحي رحمك الله في الدار الآخرة ومكانك فيها كما وعدنا الله وهو الحق بالجنة. ولأنك بعت الحياة الدنيا ومطامعها واشتريت بها الآخرة ويومها الأبقى. فأنتم السابقون ونحن اللاحقون إن شاء الله.

Dear Madam Laura

The news of the passing of our brother Sobhi GHANDOUR has struck us like lightning. We were unaware of his illness and often followed his fascinating lectures.

It is still difficult for us to come to terms with his departure. His absence will leave a great void among all his friends around the world, especially in his native country, Lebanon.

Our thoughts are with you, who faithfully accompanied him in his work and allowed us to meet you in our home several years ago.

We stand by your side and support you in this painful ordeal with all our friendship and compassion. Please accept our sincere condolences, and we hope to see you again in France or Lebanon.

We are so saddened by this news. We had great respect for him and how you helped him. Condolences to you, Laura, Allah Yerhamo. He will be missed.

Words can't express the sorrow and the sadness of losing someone dear. It was a big loss to the arab community and to all who knew him, I admire his commitment and the great financial sacrifices he made to keep the AlHewar Center to continue and to passionately defend the Arabs' causes. He was humble, modest, generous, highly respected, and loved by all around him.

My deep condolences and sympathies.
It was very painful for me to learn of the passing of Sobhi. Sobhi was a great friend of mine, and I have known him for the last 35 years. I loved him and respected him. I loved him because of his generosity of heart, his goodness, his simplicity, and his humility. I respected him because of his strong and steadfast support for all the just Arab causes and in particular the Palestinian cause. It must have been very painful to him in the last two weeks to see what is happening in Palestine. Neither he nor we ever dreamt of seeing the atrocities that have been recently committed there. Also, I respected him because of his ability to remain objective and to respect others who had different opinions than his. He was indeed the par excellence man of dialogue. Though he was very entrenched in his beliefs, he was also very entrenched in the power and courage to understand those who had different opinions and to appreciate these opinions. In his defense for the causes he espoused, he was always calm, peaceful, respectful, and very civilized. He was the ideal picture of the Arab intellectual who committed to the causes of his homeland and who at the same time understood and appreciated the Western mind. 
Sobhi’s loss is not only a loss for those who loved him, but for all the people who believe in the power of dialogue, the power of justice, and the power of the word.
I extend my condolences and sympathies to his family, to his friends, and to all of those who admired him. My prayer is for God to embrace his soul with all His love.
We will certainly cherish his friendship and the beautiful memories that we shared. We will certainly keep him alive in our hearts.

It is with great sadness that I learned about the passing of Sobhi Ghandur who animated Al Hewar Centers for years through think and thin and across so many crises and phases - the indefatigable Ghandur that I remember when I was stil living in Washington DC until I left in 2008. I continued the subscription with Al Heward till today! May Allah receives him kindly. My sincerest condolences to his family. It is truly a loss for many of us, Arab-Americans, Muslim-Americans or Americans who seek rapprochement, understanding and coexistence.

How saddened I was to hear of such a big loss. Sobhi was a very valuable friend in our community. May God shower him with his vast mercy and compensate him with a high rank in heaven and bestow upon his wife & family enough forbearing & solace

It was shocking to me to hear of the sudden death of our great friend Sobhi Ghandour. I enjoyed very much the weekly discussions about the Arab affairs led by him and presented by many scholars from the Arab world. His Alhewar Center was one of the longest running centers in the Washington Metro area. It was by all measure very enriching and educational. I will miss these discussions.
May Allah forgive his sins and accept him to the highest places in Ganna. Amin.

ستبقى روحها تعيش في ذكرى احبابها ، زوجته لورا دورن غندور وأشقاؤه عدنان وفوزي ، وشقيقته رباب ونجوى ومنى وعفاف ، الأقرباء ، والأصدقاء ، والأطفال ، ومن هم على اتصال بها. يامن رحلت عنا لدار الخلود. اسال الله (سبحانه تعالى) أن يرضى عنها وان يكون رحيما بها على الأفعال الخيرة بأن يكفيها – الجنة ، آمين. وَيُبَشِّرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا (الكهف/٢) وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ نُورُهُمْ يَسْعَى بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَتْمِمْ وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ (التحريم/٨).
المرحوم ، وأسرته يقدمون خدمات الخير للآخرين حيث. "يبشرهم ربهم برحمة منه ورضوان وجنات لهم فيها نعيم مقيم." (سورة التوبة/٢١).
نرجو من الجميع للانضمام معنا وتلاوة سورة الفاتحة على تلك الروح الطاهرة وأن يعطي أسرته الصبر والقوة لقبول إرادته ، آمين. الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ (العنكبوت/٥٩).

I was shocked knowing that Dr. Sobhi passed away. Last friday, I talked to him while he was at the hospital; he was trying to conduct the webinar, and we rejected. My deep cordial condolences to his family. May Allah bless his soul.

Sobhi and I met during the mid-eighties when he first arrived in Washington. I was serving as Consul in the Embassy of Lebanon. We immediately struck a close rapport. He became a dear friend and confidant. I remember when he first met Laura. And I always wondered how two such wonderful and kindred spirits would eventually somehow or somewhere meet. But God surely works in mysterious ways. I remember when he struggled to establish Hiwar magazine and later Hiwar Center. I never thought he would succeed. But he plodded on and he pulled them through. When I left Washington in 1989, we remained in touch and close contact. He would eventually visit me when he journeyed to Lebanon. And I was keen to participate in the Hiwar zoom meetings whenever an interesting topic specifically geared to my specialization came up. I am truly saddened by his loss. God have mercy on him. رحمك الله يا صديقي العزيز وأسكنك فسيح جنانه. إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

Sobhi was a great man and a relentless advocate for the truth, opressed and justice. He did that with courage and by spreading awarness , The Arab American community will miss his advocacy and his presence. May god bless his kind soul.

I had plans to be in Lebanon by now, but now it looks like I will not make it there anytime soon, certainly not in time to see any funeral services. Someday, gods willing, I will see whatever is left of Lebanon, and be able to visit the gravesite.

كان الإعلامي اللبناني الكبير صبحي غندور في سباق مرير مع الزمن على صهوة العمر.
كم يحزنني هؤلاء القامات الذين يغادرون وطنهم عاصفين عملاً وفعلاً وحواراً ولا يعودون إليه إلا إلى مثاويهم الأخيرة في أحسن الحظوظ.
الرحمة لروحك. العزاء لقلوب أسرتك وأصدقائك، ورفاقك في المؤتمر الشعبي اللبناني، قيادة وأعضاء، ولمعاونيك في أسرة الحوار العربي. البقاء للعمل النبيل. البقاء للحوار العربي بيننا لغة ونمطاً وآلية بناء الإنسان الفرد والإنسان المجتمع.

محمد غندور، أبرز كتاب الموقع وأهم الكتاب الصحفيين بالوطن العربي، وصاحب المواقف العروبية والدفاع عن الحقوق والحريات، حيث كان مدافعاً شرساً عن الثقافة والهوية العربية، ومنتقداً موضوعياً للاتجاهات السياسية الغربية والشرق
أوسطية، كما كان أحد المناصرين الحقيقيين عن الفلسطينيين.

وتوفى «غندور» في أمريكا صباح يوم الجمعة 20 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر الجاري، وسوف ينقل جثمانه إلى بيروت في وقتٍ لاحق ليدفن في روضة الشهيدين- الغبيري/بيروت.

عشنا معا سنين وسنين وحين تباعدنا كنا على تواصل دائم
من أمريكا إلى السعودية حين كانت زيارته لي بمثابة العيد.
كنا نلتقي عبر ندوات مركز الحوار وقبل شهر أخبرني عن معاناته، وقال لي بأنه إختزل التدخين نسبة 5% وكان آخر حوار قبل وفاته بـ 5 أيام وكأنه كان يودعني... من مكاتب التنظيم لدار المعلمين لمجلة الموقف للعمل الطلابي النضالي والإجتماعي والسياسي,
 .. آه يا أخي كم هو مؤلم فراقك ولكن إيماننا بالله كبير وبمشيئته.. إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

I am very sad about the early departure of Sobhi. I have known Sobhi for years and supported Alhewar wholeheartedly. When he informed me a couple of months ago about his diagnosis, I listened to his enthusiastic phrases and was happy that he was coping. I sent him flowers when he was visiting a relative in Florida recently. He was kind to call back and thank me. He continued to respond to his emails and the last email I received from him was last Thursday. He was very occupied with the recent escalation in Gaza.
Sobhi was visionary, articulate, and passionate. His departure is a big loss and he has left a vacuum that will not be filled for a while, at least in the USA. May his soul rest in peace.

تلقيت ببالغ الاسى والحزن خبر وفاة الاستاذ الكبير صبحي محمد غندور.. كان المرحوم من الرجال المحترمين الذين حملوا هموم امتهم العربية وقضاياها والتحديات الكبيرة التي تواجهها دون انقطاع ، والتي تأتي القضية الفلسطينية في مقدمتها ، وقد كان المرحوم مدافعا صلبا عن قضية العرب الاولى . شكل رحيله خسارة كبيرة للأمة العربية ، وسيبقى مكانه شاغرا إلى الابد وسلوانا الكبيرة على غيابه في تراه الكبير الذي تركه لنا ومجهوداته التي لاتحصى في العمل القومي. تغمد الله فقيدنا بواسع رحمته ولروحه السكينة والأطمئنان وله طيب الذكر. اخوكم زكي منصور أبوالسعود.. العربية ذالسعودية

من الصعب تصديق ما أقرأ عن وفاة واحد من أهم أعمدة الجالية العربية في أمريكا. وطني ومخلص لشعبه ولأمته، كم سنفتقدك يا أحينا الغالي. فقد كنت سنداً لنا كعرب في أمريكا وكنت قائداً إجتماعياً وستترك فراغاً كبيراً برحيك المفاجئ

خبر جلل وحزين وصادم، ما هكذا تغادر الاخ الحبيب صبحي، ابهذه البساطة؟ وما هذا التوقيت الذي يتراكم فيه القهر.
قرأت النعي مرات ومرات، ربما كان من الخطأ وربما لم اقرأ النص صحيحيا، تمنيت لو كان ذلك.

درجت أتابع تحليلاتك وأقرأ مقالاتك. كان يشدني المعنى والرؤية، لكن كانت قيمة اضافية تميزك وهي روحك العربية والدمقراطية المنفتحة وذات الوقت صاحب الثوابت وانت تسعى للنهوض بواقع الأمة والشعب، وانت المجتهد بلا كلل وانت تسير المسافات الطويلة بنفس طويل مشحونا بالتفاؤل الناتج عن الثقة بما تملكه الامة العربية من مواطن قوة.
تواصلنا في العامين الاخيرين حين دعوتني لالقاء مداخلة عبر الزوم في منصة الحوار العربي، وأذكر كيف قدّمتني للمشاركين والمشاركات، ثم بدأت اتابع الحلقات وتقديماتك بصوتك الهاديء الواضح والناضح بالمعنى، وفي كل يوم جمعة لم تسنح لي ظروفي المشاركة كنت انتظر تسجيل الورشة والذي دأبت على تعميمه بعد ساعات قليلة، كنت اشعر بالخجل وانت تتفهم عذري . لم نلتق يوما وجاهيا، لكنا التقينا وستبقى في الوجدان وطيب الذكريات.
خالص العزاء للأسرة والعائلة الكريمتين، وخالص العزاء للحوار ولشعبنا العربي الذي يفقد قامة متنورة نهضوية ومثقفا مكافحا من خيرة ابنائه.

That was the last I would expect to hear today, the unexpected sudden death, it was so sad, and painful.
I'm terribly sorry about your loss. Sobhi was a great person to have around, a wise, sincere caring individual, who always treated his colleagues with respect and dignity.

Our condolences and prayers go to the family, may Rabona reward him in Paradise, and give the family patience and strength.

The departure of Subhi Ghandour, our friend, colleague, and partner in the fight for justice and peace is sad and painful. It is a great loss for our community in Northern Virginia and USA in general. His dedication to dialogue and sustaining al Hiwar for so many years reflect his commitment to serve the community and allow us to grow in many ways. May his soul rest in peace and be granted the mercy he deserves.

My condolences, prayers and heartfelt pain for your and our loss.
Friday will never be the same without Brother Sobhi. We all looked forward all week to his analysis, his selection of speakers, and his dedication to the Arab Cause, especially Palestine. Even his death had to coincide with the War On Palestine, as he wished to join the thousands of "Shuhada's" in Paradise.

May Allah give you patience, faith, and comfort in these sad times. We will miss you, ya Zalami. Why?! You left so fast, not even a warning or a goodbye.
