Obituary

April 18, 2021
We mournfully announce the passing of Wayne Stevenson Key, 67, of Wilberforce, Ohio. Steve passed away at Miami Valley Hospital on April 16, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with Colon Cancer.

Steve was the 7th and last child born to Eugene and Dorothy Key on January 6th 1954 in Baldwyn Mississippi. He moved to Wilberforce along with his family at the age of five and remained there throughout the majority of his life. Steve loved sports and was an avid fan of the Central State University Marauders whose football and basketball teams influenced his lifelong interest and passion for athletics and the mentoring of young people.

Steve graduated from Xenia High School in 1972 lettering in varsity football and basketball. Steve attended Wilmington College on a football scholarship but later transferred to Michigan State University where he graduated with a major in political science.

After graduating college, Steve started his career in sales working for Honeywell in Chicago, Illinois. His interest later changed with a career move to Bank One and various financial institutions in the mortgage and corporate lending divisions.

Steve valued engaging conversations and debates with special interest in sports, movies and politics. His political aspirations were highlighted with a very competitive democratic candidate run during the Ohio 74th State District Rep 2012 election.

Steve traveled all over the USA but always relished his home in Wilberforce where he was raised and shared amazing friendships and lifelong experiences. Steve never married but took great interest in counseling and supporting family and friends. He was quick-witted and often enjoyed laughing at his own jokes and observations. And upon occasions, he might even laugh at yours.

Steve was a Christian believer and was preceded in death by parents, Eugene and Dorothy Key and brother, Burnis Key.

Steve is survived by his brothers, Jesse Key (Nancy) of Buffalo, NY., Stanley Key (Norma Jean) of Dallas, Tx. and three sisters, Dr. Dorothy Gardner-Martin of Deer Field Beach, Fl., Dr. Gwen McIntosh of Deer Field Beach, Fl., and Dr. Minnie Wheeler-Thomas (Richard) of East Lancing, MI., along with a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. A very special thanks to those trusted friends who stood with Steve and truly supported him during his trying final years.

In lieu of the Covid 19 surges, the family has decided to postpone Steve’s memorial service and celebration until late June 2021. Details for Steve’s memorial service will be posted here when finalized.
