When I arrived in San Francisco as a new graduate in the Fall of 1996 with a stack of Dartmouth Alumni names in my hand (I am a '94 grad), Ted was one of the first people that I met. He found out I was an athlete, and invited me right away to RACE in a sea kayak race as his partner in the San Francisco Bay (a 24 year old and a 68 year old!). Mind you, I had never been in a sea kayak before! Nervous as I was, I showed up at 5am in the morning in Sausalito and met Ted, put on all the gear, got into the kayak, and RACED with hundreds of other kayakers around Alcatrez!!! It was incredible. I think Ted and I came in last place, but we loved it. We paddled hard, and chatted, and I had the most fun of anyone out there on the water. I knew from that day on that I would be friends with Ted. Soon after, I met up with Ted and met his wife, and Ted guided me through the networking process of meeting several other Dartmouth alumni in the area. He was different than all the investment banking alums I met (the field I entered), and Ted always reminded me to stop and get outdoors and enjoy fresh air. I moved away from San Fransisco many years ago but always have thought fondly of Ted. I think of him still alive paddling out there on the water with me. A true Dartmouth alum...love you forever Ted. I am forever grateful.

Ted was one of the first people in the angling trade to befriend us when we launched our magazine in 2008. His freely given advice and wisdom was always available when we met him at the major trade shows around the world and we always looked forward to the pleasure of his company. His considered way of speaking, often interjected with clever and humorous stories, was so engaging. Always well dressed and with impeccable manners, he was a proper gentleman. His family often came into conversation. I remember having dinner with him in Budapest and his eyes misting up as he spoke of his wife and family. Anyone who knew him was the better for it.

For years, Ted was a generous man to our community at George Peabody Elementary School. He tutored students with care, warmth and an optimistic outlook. Ted had a way of brightening the office when he'd come in, always stopping by my room to offer a happy greeting, funny story or bit of wisdom. He was a gentleman. Ted loved life, his family, his community and his adventures. He is missed and remembered.

It's common to talk of something called the gift of friendship. Ted Bamberger brought together a group of men who would otherwise never have met and made these men friends not just to himself but to each other.

I ride the bus quite frequently, but I almost never talk to anyone while on the bus... until I sat next to Ted one day (almost 10 years ago). He was reading a book which I had previously enjoyed. I asked him what he thought of the book and his face lit up with a positive response. We were immediately engaged in conversation which lasted until we both got off the bus at the JCC (which was one stop beyond my typical stop but I didn't want to end the enjoyable conversation!). I subsequently bumped into Ted at the JCC while I was there swimming with my young boys. Ted went out of his way to say hi and remembered my name without hesitation. From that day forward, I would always stop whatever I was doing (usually chasing one of our kids around) to say hi to Ted.
I am truly sorry to hear of the loss for the Bamberger family and all those who have had the privilege of getting to know Ted. He is someone I will never forget, I truly special person.

Warm regards,
Stephen Wynne

Good morning Janet, Karen, and the rest of the Bamberger clan. I don't know you all, but I know how much you miss your Teddy because I sure do. Thinking about him a lot, very sorry not to have seen him one more time (at least!) Love from Colorado, Bar

Dear Janet and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Ted was a great man. I loved him dearly.

It was an honor for me to call him “my friend”. But, he was much more than that. He was a gentleman in the traditional sense, he respected people with different opinions, he deeply cared about those with less and he cherished his wife and family. This, we can all learn from. He was a tremendous supporter when I needed help with the soccer kids in Marin City. Ted has impacted my life and in-turn he will impact the lives of my boys. For all of this, I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to know Ted(and you). He will be missed and remembered.
All my love,
Steve

Ted befriended my wife when they both took an early-morning aerobics class at the Chinatown YMCA. We've kept in touch over the years with dinners, hikes, ice skating and art museums. Always behind those twinkling eyes and ready smile was a kind, roving, caring, and practical intelligence that was uniquely Ted. He inspired our admiration, and we're thankful to have shared his friendship.

I was a good business friend of Ted's. We both served in the knitting
industry. When I established my company in Taiwan, Floma Co. Ltd.,
Ted represented us and we always had a happy and positive relationship.

I was very sorry to hear about Ted's passing, but knowing that it happened doing something he loved, softens the pain. Ted was a JCL reading tutor in my classroom at George Peabody for a number of years. His patience and good nature helped struggling readers so much. He made a difference to those he helped.

So many of my childhood memories involve the Bamberger family - lucky me. Ted was supportive and straightforward and the kind of person who made me want to be better when in his presence - OK maybe I didn't get that when I was 10 and 11 years old but those early experiences have made a lasting impression on my life. I will be forever grateful to have known him. Love you Bambergers!

Ted was one of the first people who came to greet Stacie and me when we moved to 16th avenue. He defined what it means to be a neighbor and cared deeply about our community. Ted was a regular fixture on our block, walking the neighborhood frequently which gave us the opportunity to talk about our neighborhood and life. He was a beautiful person and he will be missed by our entire family

I've known Ted for over 60 years and what a pleasure that has been. He was always a mensch. I"m very grateful to have seen him recently: he was in fine fettle even a month ago.
The world is a sadder place without Ted among those present.

Ted was the first to welcome us to the neighborhood. Imagine finding a fellow Clevelander on the same block in San Francisco. He loved talking about Cleveland with me and always had a kind word for our children. He will truly be missed.

Soooo sad to hear about Ted's passing!! I loved meeting and talking to Ted! He was always so involved with his community, with our block parties and the political life in the city and neighborhood. He was soooo generous with his time and put a lot of effort into making our block the best it could be. I will really really miss him!

My earliest memory of him is on a bicycle-built-for-two at a family get-together.
When I was a child, he left me a thank you note when I vacated my bedroom for his visit. It said "Thank you for the bed; it works!"
Such love and humor, handsome and generous. What a man!

Ted was always an enthusiastic, patient and dedicated JCL tutor. I enjoyed watching Ted read with his students here at George Peabody. I had the pleasure of having many wonderful conversations with Ted over they years about our school, his students, his travels, his business and life here in SF. These talks happened here and at the JCC. I have great memories of Ted and will miss him.

16th Avenue will always be grateful to Ted for turning our street into a community. His warmth, enthusiasm and persistence opened doors and led to friendships that would not have happened without him. Ted always had a smile and a kind word when he stopped to chat on his walks. I will truly miss him!

Ted always greeted me with a smile on his face and a kind word. I will never forget the day when I was updating him on my family. At one point, he smiled, looked through me and calmly said, “you are on the right path”. Seems simple but it meant a lot to me coming from him. He will be missed.

When we were Pixley Street neighbors, Ted came out to dinner with Madeline, Jason and me at a Vietnamese place around the corner. Ted ordered the whole fish prepared - somehow or other. When the platter arrived with its imposing contents, Ted gave it one of his profoundly serious looks and said, "that's not a meal. That's an experience!"

Ted was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was a great American and showed such kindness. Ted was instrumental in growing our business in Europe and he will be greatly missed by all who worked with him. We didn't get to see him often but his presence was always felt.  The staff of Big Bite Baits, Dennis and Joyce Montgomery, Scott Montgomery, Tammy Foshee, Mike Valster
