Tom's Life

March 19, 2011

As most of you who knew Tom well will know, his family meant the world to him and his most enjoyable times were when he was up on the dance floor with all his close family around him.

Here we have collected some of the more memorable dates and experiences in his life to share with you.

Born in 1931, the eldest of 6 children in Alloa, Tom spent the first 20 years of his life in Scotland before moving to London after he was de-mobbed in 1951.

He then trained to become a design draughtsman and worked for the General Post Office Research Department where he met Janet in 1962, also a draughtswoman and an office romance turned into a 48 year marriage.

In 1963, Tom and Janet moved to Letchworth and Tom joined the pipe-band which he really enjoyed.

They moved to Dorset in 1965 and soon after in 1966, Douglas was born. Tom was a very hard worker and had three jobs at the same time to make sure he provided for his family in those early years.

He was also a keen badminton player and soon became a player for Dorset County as well as teaching badminton at adult education classes.

In 1969 Heather was born followed in 1971 by Gregory then Michael and Angela in 1976.

Tom continued to work as a draughtsman and was employed at Winfrith until , at 55 he moved to Cooknells Electronics in Weymouth where he was very happy until his retirement at 65. In more recent years he still hadn't given up that work ethic and worked as a delivery driver for the local village shop - despite being 'retired'!

He loved spending time watching the birds from his chair in the lounge whilst finishing the latest challenging crossword and also loved listening to some of the musicals he had been to see.

He was incredibly proud of all his children and grand-children and will be very much missed by all of us.
