The Well went Sour for Baker Hughes
St. John's, NL - For those of you in the oil and gas field the well went sour for Baker Hughes(BH) in their opening match up against Maverick Sports in Division III semifinal action. BH led by fifteen points at the half but the Mavericks showed poise and dicipline and came back to take the lead by eight and finally secured the victory with a score of 72-71. The thirty day layoff for BH did not seem to hamper their performance early in the game but certainly played a factor in the final minutes. Maverick Sports were enthusiastic by the return of their guard, Corey Carew who was on a leave of absence from the team as he spent the last 4 months skiing at Whistler. Team spokesperson Aaron Beaton was tracked down in sunny Conception Bay South sipping on a cold Canadian Light,"...I have a bruised hand as a result of the physical play of that game....At one point I think I was boxing out 3 players on the opposing team....When your as strong and masculine as I am then sometimes you have to do what you have to do....I had 300 rebounds and managed to sink 6 points for the team. We play game two on Wednesday night and it should be interesting...."

Public Service Strike Over...B-Ball Playoffs Begin.
St. John's, NL - The one positive coming out of the Public Service Strike is that the Newfoundland Basketball Association can finally regain access to the local basketball facilities across the province. After a one month layoff, Maverick Sports hit to the court friday night for a brief team meeting and practice to get ready for their best of three series against the oil and gas thugs, Baker Hughes. The team was able to regain their chemistry and physically they look to be in good shape despite the 30 day layoff. Team spokeperson Aaron Beaton was able to chat briefly despite the Spring clean up and basement renovations occuring at his estate,"...We are ready....the layoff was dissappointing as we could not gain access to any of the gyms across the province....we contacted Mile One Stadium ( Home of the Baby Leafs) and the Cornerbrook Canada Games Complex but neither suited our teams needs....and we had some difficulty with the sponsership side of things ...(smell...smell...sniff ...warning BS ahead) ...anyway....Baker Hughes will be a tough series as they have the size but our speed and ability has overcome this factor throughout the season......Our Team has been watching the Classic Hoops station and the old Celtic vs Lakers games from the '87 playoffs....it has been enlightening as my knees are starting to look like Keven McHale's and my speed like Robert Parrish....oh ya .....and my nose like Larry Bird's!..." For those of you who are interested you can pick up the Mavericks playoff games on only four local networks.....BBC ( Blake Beatons NASA Satelite Dish) , A&L (Ale & Lager House Community Cable), WCBN ( Wolfville Cable Broadcasting Network), and finally it is available on ABTR Radio ( Annoying Buffalo Sports Talk Radio ).

Someone Call a Lawyer....
St. John's, NL - ....'cause it should be illegal to have a record this good. Maverick Sports have taken the game of Basketball to the next level with a 16W-1L record in Molson Metro Division III action. The team has a streamlined roster of 8 players that have shown they are in control of this division. However their final three matches of the season involve Steers & Sleeves (15W-2L), East Side Mario's ( 5W-11L) and Baker Hughes (6W-9L) all of which are the stronger teams in the league. Only the top four teams in the division move to the playoffs but for the Mavs its only a matter of who they are playing and not whether they will be there or not. Team spokeperson Aaron Beaton invited the press to the teams annual social held at the Molson Brewery and this to say..." We are on roll.....our last couple of games have been lazy but we just need to come out hard and not take any team lightly...all teams are out to beat us.....Playoffs should be interesting......We recognize that our fans and subscribers to METRO REPORT will have a difficult time trying to focus on our teams run for the finals especially with NCAA March Madness and all.....However we promise that Metro March Madness will be worth the watch......We hope TSN will pick up exclusive rights for the playoffs...." Once again Beaton's bullshit gets worse and worse so we must close this edition ....Happy St. Patty's Day!

Lazy Mavs Squeek Victory
St. John's, NL - Maverick Sports squeeked out a victory in MOLSON Canadian Light Division III action at Brother Rice Gym last night to solidify their first place spot in the league. Instant Replay had the ball in the dying seconds but could not score and the Mavs went home with a 70-69 victory. It was a sluggish game for the Mavs and their first game without Coach Al after his termination last month. Poor rebounding, and turnovers forced the Mavs into playing catch up ball most of the game but they were able to maintain dicipline in the final minutes to secure the win. We were able to catch up with team spokesperson Beaton at Tim Hortons - Manuals on his way to work "....we were lazy...no intensity ....we had lead in our shoes and butter on our fingers... we could not keep control of the ball...I can't believe we won.....We even put a full court press on and my man got free and slam dunked on my head!....I came back and scored the next two hoops but it was hard to disturb their momentum.....We had tremendous dicipline and character in the final minutes...." Asked if the team missed the direction of Coach Al,.........Beaton had no comment.

Mavs fire head Coach...
St. John's, NL - Sporting a 14W-1L record and a 13 game winning streak, Maverick Sports has ended their relationship with coach Allan. The shocking news came to light after one of the Mavs team practices at which coach Allan's style became too much for the players too handle. Team spokesperson Aaron Beaton was tracked down at his estate and was able to comment,"...enough was enough....we were on a 12 game winning streak and were being coached like we were in the cellar...some of us guys just want to go out and play a game of ball and relax.....we felt like we were being coached in preparation for NCAA March Madness....We have five games left in regular season and we are confident that we can finish on top and execute in the playoffs....we wish Coach Al all the best ...." The big question will be if the Mavs can keep it together for the balance of the season under player coach Brian Butler. Beaton also explained that he would be unavailable for comment for the next few weeks as he prepares for his trip to the First Round of March Madness in the Eastern Round of NCAA B-Ball....Buffalo, NY......Look for the Judique A-1 sign in the bleachers! PS: Shannon and I are Pregnant!

The Well Went Dry for Baker Hughes
St. John's, NL - Down by twelve points through most of the first half, Maverick Sports managed to come back and beat Baker Hughes 74-63 and improve their record to 12W-1L. The size of the Oil and Gas team took its tole on the Mavericks but a team effort took place to capture the win. ".....our forwards took a beating..." commented Beaton as we caught him at a St. John's Maple Leafs hockey game the day after,"...we had comparable height but they had 30 pounds on most of us.....we never let ourselves get down and slowly picked away at the lead until we finsihed them off in the fourth quarter.....it reminded me of my high school days of when I carried our team through the battlefields of Margaree and Mabou or even my church ball days on Barrington Street in Halifax ....ahh the memories!....." It seems Beaton may have had a few too many Molson Canadians as the bullshit is getting worse. Stay tuned for next weeks results as the Mavericks take on Instant Replay as part of the ECMA celebration week here in St. John's.

Mavericks Dominate....again!
St. John's, NL - College of North Atlantic (CONA) suffered their first loss in 2004 to Maverick Sports by a score of 78-40 . The Mavs (12W-1L) only had six players dressed for the game (Carew moving away, Quann working, and Squires travelling) but still managed to outplay the struggling young college team. Forwards, Beaton, Power, and d'Entremount logged 35+ minutes each and pounded the CONA backcourt to force them into foul trouble to set the tone for the rest of the game. "....Our team is playing well..." commented Beaton, "...even I banged in 10pts to help the cause which is not normal for me....with Carew out of the line up for the balance we all stepped up our game to make up his points...." Strand West Bar & Grill are next for the Mavs in late January.

Mavericks Unstoppable...
St. John's, NL - Halfway through regular season play, Maverick Sports has certainly shown the Metro Division III League that they are in charge. With a 10W -1L record starting the second half of the season, teams are shaking in their shoe's. "We are still licking our wounds..." was one comment made by an opposing team that suffered a 40 point loss to the Mavericks. The Mavericks are starting the new year without starting point guard, Cory Carew who has made a career change that forces him into the Wild West of Canada. Rumors has it he may be getting picked up in a west coast b-ball league or he could just be looking to be a ski instructor at Whistler. Team spokesperson Aaron Beaton was available for comments at his estate in NFLD, "...One word can sum it up....Talent.....We play a diciplined, patient game....and we all play our roles.....I myself never was a huge scorer in my early years.....Rebounds, Defense and hard work .....Our League only tracks offence stats but as we all know defense wins games...." This is not a suprising comment from Beaton who is averaging 2.3 PPG and a FT% of 25%, but we have to give the big bullshitter the benefit of the doubt....The Mavericks seem unstoppable! Stay tuned for the result of the Mavs January 11th game.

"Breton Boys" Sign with Mavericks
St. John's, NL - MOLSON Canadian Light Division III Basketball excitement is building as the league approaches opening night on October 19th. The big news for the league is how Maverick Sports were able to sign both Cape Breton native, Aaron Beaton, and Harbour Breton native Blair Hancock. Beaton and Hancock as you know came from the 2003 Division IV Ale & Lager Mariners who folded at the end of the 2003 season. Our news team had a chance to speak with former one of the former Mariner's at his estate in Conception Bay South, "...we played all summer with the Mavericks and were comfortable that we could make a contribution to the team....last year was dissappointing for us as we had high hopes for the Mariners but we could not get the consistentcy that we needed from all players.....We have 10 committed players with the Mavericks ...lots of speed which is where Blair will fit in and size which is where I hope to contribute....the step up to division three will be a great experience....." The Mavericks host Maanan Bakery for their home opener on Tuesday October 21st......

St. John's, NL - With the first half of the season under their belt the Mariners were left wondering whether playoff hopes were out of reach. With a 3W-6L record at Xmas the tired seamen needed the holiday break to re-group. Sitting in 7th place and one spot away from a playoff spot meant a bit of extra effort in the new year. The Mariners hit the road in the New Year to Mount Pearl and met Big Bens and West Side Charlies with the result putting the Mariners further into the basement. Coming home to their dedicated fan at Brother Rice Gymnasium was going to be tough as they prepared for their first home game in the new year. The match up was to be tough as only six players were available to play and the Parrots were stacking a full bench. 69-49 Parrots.....3W-9L for the Mariners and playoff hopes lost! Team spokesperson Aaron Beaton "....we have been struggling most of the season to establish some team chemistry and, as well , a lot of players have been asked to step up and take on a bigger role as compared to last year. This has made it difficult for us to fill the win column....I have had to break down and strap on a knee brace to help me handle the extra minutes on the floor (2002 - 15minutes/game versus 2003 - 35minutes/game) ...We will battle through the balance of the season and continue to have fun....." Beaton remined us throughtout the interview that there is no risk of the team folding or moving to a new town next season. Plans are already underway for next seasons entry draft....
