This past Thanksgiving, I used one of Dad's favorite holiday toasts: "To those who, in service to our country, cannot be with family and friends this holiday season." Dad especially remembered what it felt like to be on duty abroad on Christmas day. More than once he described to us a Christmas Eve in Vietnam during which he assembled a government-issued aluminum Christmas tree. Sometimes he would add that it looked just enough like a real Christmas tree to make him miss home even more.

I have such special memories of Al and Janie over many years, including crashing their honeymoon in Carmel in (I think) December of 1960. Mom and Dad took Rory and me to Carmel after Christmas, and we visited Mim Godwin. Janie and Al, who had just gotten married, were staying with Mim, so we all had a picnic on the beach.
I lived in Washington D.C. for seven years in the 1970's, and I was often invited to Janie and Al's for dinner. They were both the best surrogate parents--generous with their time and advice. (Al and I did not always see eye to eye politically, but he was patient with me and always a good listener.)
I am saddened by Al (and Janie's) passing, but as I look at the wonderful photos that have been posted, I realize they had a very good life. None of us can ask for more than that.
Happy Trails Al,

To my friend, mentor, and fellow Marine tanker: Al, you were an inspiration to me from the first time I met you in May of 1960 at my home in Walnut Creek. Your help in the Marine Corps and friendship in all the intervening years has meant so much to me.
Semper Fi,
Jim Moore
