Dear Andy,
I was so fortunate when you decided to come work in my research group at UC Davis, to pursue your Ph.D. Not only were you clearly highly intelligent, but you were always so motivated, ambitious, and driven, yet you were happy and excited by your work, especially each and every challenge that came your way.
I always appreciated your independence and your motivation, and enjoyed seeing you learn, grow, and succeed in your career. And all along the way, you helped others to push themselves to also do more and do better, and you excelled in educating young students and making sure they had opportunities to learn. Your leadership within our professional community was highly valued and greatly appreciated.
Beyond your wonderful professional accomplishments and contributions, you relished life. Your smile would spread happiness to all around you. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to know you, and your smile! I will remember it always.
Thank you for staying in touch over the years, and sharing your news and achievements with me along the way. I am and will always be very proud of you. And I will miss you.
My deepest sympathies to your family.
Julie
