I surfed Del Mar this morning in honor of Uncle Ben. He bought me a longboard and named it "Precious," so that I wouldn't mess up the board. He introduced me to surfing, and I am forever grateful. I will always be reminded of him when I'm in the ocean. He would call me up and say he was in San Diego and that we should go surfing. Those are good memories. I am so thankful I could see him this summer. We all went camping together, and it was so fun. He was such a charger surfing when the fires were in Oregon. We had to be careful and social distanced because of COVID-19 when I came to visit over the summer, but when I left, he gave me a hug to say goodbye. That hug means everything to me right now <3 Uncle Ben, you are an amazing uncle and person. You will be so greatly missed. I am so sad for my cousins and Auntie. They are an amazing family, and I know they need our thoughts and prayers as much as possible. I love you guys.

I’ll miss seeing you in the water Ben! Always wore a smile and a positive attitude and wouldn’t hesitate to give out a compliment. You could tell how proud he was of Travis whenever he got a good one. My thoughts are with the entire Cockcroft family.

I am in shock with this news... I am so sorry for the pain the family is in and bless you all. I do have to smile, however, when I think of what a great family Doc he was... so caring and professional while also being a friend. Peace and Light.

You were my doctor for 16 years. You always listened to my concerns, never dismissing them and always following up with appropriate tests or procedures. I wish I would have sent you a note when you were alive telling you how much I appreciated you. May God wrap his comforting arms around your family and give them his peace. You will be greatly missed.

Dr. Cockcroft was an amazing person to work with and a doctor. He took such good care of my family. My daughter had me get her a pair of scrubs to wear to her appointments with him so she could be a doctor like “Dr.CaCraw”

I had the honor of collaborating with Dr. Cockcroft on some of his patients as a nurse. I remember that he always worked hard to ensure his patients received the best care possible. He truly cared about each and every one of them.

I don’t know what came before or after this family moment that Ben shared with me, but it made a special memory for me to see into a good man’s life –

At a routine medical check-up, Ben told me of studying with his daughter who was in medical school. I don’t have kids and a parent doing school work with their child happens in millions of families daily, but in Ben’s case, the image of imparting his medical craft on a next generation, seemed like a magical bonding image to me.

Good-bye Ben

You helped me save my life almost 10 years ago.
So many things happened those first few years. They were dark, and devastating and you never let me give up! Not once!
And now. Well now, I'm a totally different person. A mentor, a business owner, a good stable parent, a stable wife, a giving member of my community!!!
So much has changed, I guess it only makes sense this part changes, too...
You will always be a pillar of my life, especially my new one.
Thank you for everything.
You will be truly missed in this community.

My Dr for 17 years! Been through so much along the way, the day my mom brought me in to get help and they had one Dr there that could help me, it was him! I allways knew he would be there as a constant. He is gone way to soon! Thank you for helping through these years and whenever I had a problem you did whatever you could to try and fix it. You were a good Dr who helped me with so much! Especially being the one provider in the area for so long and first to prescribe life changing medicine for addiction. It changed my life. Who knows where I would be without Your help! And the help you have to so many! Thank you!

Dr. Ben Cockcroft's Obituary

March 24, 2021
Seaside
Sept. 22, 1958 — Feb. 15, 2021
Dr. Ben Cockcroft, beloved husband, father, brother, physician and friend to many, died Feb. 15, 2021, while snowboarding in Washington state.

For nearly 32 years, Dr. Cockcroft has been a primary care provider in north Oregon coastal communities. He served thousands of people and multiple generations, from grandparents to babies.
He was a skilled diagnostician committed to whole person care, and dedicated his skills to serving those most marginalized. Many of Ben’s patients speak of his non-judgmental nature, endearing honesty and caring heart as he went above and beyond to serve their health care needs. He loved his patients and community.
Ben and his wife, Lindy, have been at the heart of activities in the North Coast communities. They have three adult children, April, Lucas and Travis (and his wife, Janet). Ben was also a proud “dog grandpa” to both Travis’ and April’s dogs.

Together, the Cockcroft family had many adventures traveling, surfing and being outdoors. More than anything, Ben loved surfing, studying with April and Travis and canoeing and playing chess with Lucas. Ben spent lots of time coaching his children to victory in soccer over the years, and also played keeper for many seasons in a local league.
Those who know Ben know of his deep love of surfing and of the local surf community. Ben placed first in many surfing competitions up and down the coast.
Of the memories being shared, so many speak of Dr. Cockcroft’s dedication to serving his community and sharing his spirit so generously. In his local community, he created a path at the Cove in Seaside, moving rocks to make the beach accessible to all.
Ben inspired energy and greatness from all those around him, often exclaiming “”use it or lose it!” His quirky sense of humor always left people laughing (if they could figure out that he was joking).
Anyone who knew him would say he was truly an 18-year-old at heart, but with a work ethic that exceeded all others. At home, Ben could always be found at his computer, finishing the day’s work while analyzing the surf. He passed this work ethic on to his children, of whom he was very proud.
Ben was the pillar of the Cockcroft family near and far, always checking in and taking care of others, exhibiting bravery in the hardest of times. Ben has two brothers, Peter and Eric, whom he loved very much. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eva and James.
Dr. Cockcroft was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine and completed an internship in Fresno, California, before serving his residency in family medicine at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital in California.
He moved to Seaside 32 years ago, and has been serving his patients in Clatsop County ever since. He loved his patients and Providence team members, whom he deeply valued and enjoyed working with every day.
Additionally, he had the opportunity to serve the community of Oaxaca, Mexico, as a physician on multiple medical trips over the years. Dr. Cockcroft is the past president of the Clatsop County Medical Society and a former chief of staff at Providence Seaside Hospital.
The Cockcroft family is grateful to all who have extended care and concern, with particular appreciation to Detective Ed Christian and the team at King County Search and Rescue for their heroic efforts, as well as the team of volunteers who endured severe weather during the search and always took time to listen to and engage with the family.
The family also wants to thank KSWB and John Chapman for broadcasting the memorial service, everyone who participated, and the community, for their support.
A future paddle-out in the spring or summer, once conditions allow, is being planned for a later date.

I loved working with Dr. Cockroft. Every time we had a bad baby at seaside, he would come to the nursery and take charge. When would ask who was on call for peds and they said Ben, I could relax.
More than being an amazing Physician, he was a great person. I loved chatting with him, watching him surf and was grateful for the path to the beach he rebuilt every summer.
I remember one afternoon being at the cove section with Zarah across from our house and seeing the coast guard helicopter hovering.
I was wondering what happened and your mom rushed up there and told me that your dad went out to rescue a noob from the rip tide. I was so nervous. Then I saw your dad walking on the rocks with his helmet. He casually said that it happens and he needed some help.
Amazing! He will be truly missed. I know how proud he is of you and your brothers.

On the concrete in Vagas

February 25, 2021
We were all in Vagas for Eric's 50th birthday we walked all over town and we're hurrying back to catch the bus to get back to the Orleans when I tripped over a manhole cover sticking out of the sidewalk and down I went really bad on my face and knees. Didn't think I'd ever walk again but Dr Ben said put an ice pack on my knee and in about a hour I was back at the slots and bar all ok thanks to the Dr Bens the best ever always will be
