We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear and long-time friend David. David was a principled intellectual, an avid defender of human rights and justice, and had an outrage against corruption. David loved poetry and he always amazed us when he produced the appropriate poem at the appropriate moment, whether it was classical poetry or “zagal”. In 1994, we asked David to introduce the poet Nizar Kabbani at the AUB Alumni Association of North America National Convention in Washington, DC. Although we did not give him ample time to prepare, his introduction was a masterpiece. David, you shall be dearly missed. May God rest your soul in peace.
Lois, may God give you strength and patience. Our heartfelt condolences.

what a great lose to have this wonderful “ big man” leave us behind without much of pride of having men remaining of his stature amongst us here in the American-Arab diaspora. Professor Khairallah had exemplified the ultimate principal thinker and philosophical man who fearlessly spoke his conscious in defense of what he believed it was humanly, legally and politically right.. May God Bless His Soul and make his memory his memory among us, and others, an eternal one.

Dear Lois, and Eric and Ghilaine
I share in your sadness and feel the pain. My most treasured memory is Thanksgiving spent with you all at Lois and David and my boys at your home. Warmth, love and profound intellect is what I remember. Lois, I know you will endure the pain ahead but know that I am a phone call away. May his soul rest in peace and who knows? May be cross path with my Christopher. Much love and deep respect.

I spoke to you on the phone for two hours in 2010. It was enough to convince me to have full trust in you... in your rock solid, impeccable, moral system and your commitment to justice and peace. It is always sad when our world loses a distinguished soul like yours.

"The greatest problem with communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished" -
"Courage is the first of all virtues because if you haven't courage you may not have the opportunity to use any of the others."

My wish is to live without disliking anyone,
To love without being jealous of anyone,
To rise without being elevated over anyone, and
To advance without stepping on anyone or becoming envious of those above me.

Lois & Family, We are sorry for your (our) loss. Dawood's departure is a loss to all who fought for human rights and justice. May his soul rest in peace and may the Lord give you the fortitude to sustain this gigantic loss. Zeinab & Victor Shalhoub

The sadness of losing an exemplary mentor, friend, brother, and a confident – all wrapped in one person - is impossible to describe in words or actions.

Daoud was always there and available – ready to share his thoughts, argue his passion for human justice and human rights, his outrage against corruption and tyranny, and his continuous promotion of critical thinking and intellectual reasoning.

Daoud’s love and appreciation of life was equally evident; he thrived on being around friends and colleagues to share a meal, tell a joke, or talk about the music of the Rahbanis and Fairouz, cite some classic Arabic poetry, describe our unique history and struggles, and the uniqueness of our culture as Arabs.

I am so going to miss you my dear Daoud. The last time you called me and said let’s have lunch and chat, I told you that I needed to run an errand and I asked if we could meet the following week. Well, that “following” week never happened and I am now in a state of endless regret. You just left us too soon.

Well, until we meet again my dear Daoud, may you rest in peace. You will be missed, immensely.

The beacon that lit the way of dignity, sound governance and transparency in the Arab world, is slightly dimmer tonight Dawood. Your departure has exhausted much of its glitter. Our causes lost most of their prose. But, as the favorite theme of the times spells it, I can tell you that ‘we’ll get through it’, albeit alone, without your stewardship.

Farewell Dawood. Prepare that Valhalla for us, that where human dignity is a given, but most importantly, that where Sushi & piles of pickled ginger is ........... for free.
