Dear Lois,

We were very sad to hear the news and so sorry we couldn’t be with you. A big loss to all of us - family, friends & the Lebanese community in the US. David's memory will forever be with us.

May his soul rest in Heaven. David is surely in a better place...

With all our love,

I lost in David a lifetime friend and guide. We first met in the early seventies when we were teaching at the law school of the Lebanese University in Beirut. Then we met again in 1978 when I joined IFC of the World Bank Group. Since then, our friendship kept growing until we retired and beyond.

I always admired David's integrity and loyalty to the many causes that he fiercely fought for, including his fights against corruption and injustice.

I will certainly miss him every minute of every day. But my consolation shall always be and remain that he went to a better place. God bless his soul and May it rest in peace. Allah yerhamo.

Dearest David,
You were larger than life. Apart from your intellectual might, you were full of passion, energy, curiosity, and an amazing lust for life. Your absence will be a huge void for our family. You were so generous and loving. I never forget the summer you and Lois hosted me at your house while I was still a student. You taught me how to make “mnazleh”. I continued learning from you throughout my life. Especially your determination and always pushing us to become our better selves. I am sorry I ended up moving far away and did not get to see you as often as I wished. I will miss you very much but you will remain in my heart. Rest in peace Davido and keep good company to dad for me.
Love, your Badrieh

Davido, Hard to find words. Your image is etched in me. “Heydeh benteh “. You said it, you felt it, and you practiced it.
You were simply a cut above. If I were a painter, I would paint a knight on a white horse charging at ignorance, corruption and indolence.
Over the last few months, I saw you totally fearless of death, but terribly impatient with your physical containment. Even during excruciating physical discomfort, you would perk up and listen to your dear friends relating news about your dear Lebanon. And you would get instantly animated and involved and passionate.

Your appetite for life - well your appetite for everything!- was so amazing.. You never refused my special hospital yogurt and honey concoction. We laughed through every hardship you had. We laughed at the aversion you had for the unattractive nurses, your burst of energy with cuter ones..
Your humor perfused even during extreme physical conditions. I remember you saying :” Heydeh el hmara” , referring to your limp handicapped right arm or leg. I also remember your famous “ Ya 3eyn!!” when you had a bad hair day.
I remember the hearty laughter during the grooming “competitions” we had to keep you handsome.

You showed an immeasurable love for my little family of four. You felt such pride that your godson William wanted to be a lawyer. The four of us felt that you and Lois had our backs.

When a nurse asked your wife once how tall u were, Lois replied : “Oh, he may be 5’10 “, but he’s a giant “. Unrehearsed, spontaneous, indisputable.

So our giant has left us. And a giant vacuum is felt around him.
Our only consolation is that his greatness has somehow elevated every person he touched.
If I say good bye , would it stop you from communicating with me?
Find a way davido. Find a way. I know you can.
Miss u davido.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear and long-time friend David. David was a principled intellectual, an avid defender of human rights and justice, and had an outrage against corruption. David loved poetry and he always amazed us when he produced the appropriate poem at the appropriate moment, whether it was classical poetry or “zagal”. In 1994, we asked David to introduce the poet Nizar Kabbani at the AUB Alumni Association of North America National Convention in Washington, DC. Although we did not give him ample time to prepare, his introduction was a masterpiece. David, you shall be dearly missed. May God rest your soul in peace.
Lois, may God give you strength and patience. Our heartfelt condolences.

what a great lose to have this wonderful “ big man” leave us behind without much of pride of having men remaining of his stature amongst us here in the American-Arab diaspora. Professor Khairallah had exemplified the ultimate principal thinker and philosophical man who fearlessly spoke his conscious in defense of what he believed it was humanly, legally and politically right.. May God Bless His Soul and make his memory his memory among us, and others, an eternal one.

Dear Lois, and Eric and Ghilaine
I share in your sadness and feel the pain. My most treasured memory is Thanksgiving spent with you all at Lois and David and my boys at your home. Warmth, love and profound intellect is what I remember. Lois, I know you will endure the pain ahead but know that I am a phone call away. May his soul rest in peace and who knows? May be cross path with my Christopher. Much love and deep respect.

I spoke to you on the phone for two hours in 2010. It was enough to convince me to have full trust in you... in your rock solid, impeccable, moral system and your commitment to justice and peace. It is always sad when our world loses a distinguished soul like yours.

"The greatest problem with communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished" -
"Courage is the first of all virtues because if you haven't courage you may not have the opportunity to use any of the others."

My wish is to live without disliking anyone,
To love without being jealous of anyone,
To rise without being elevated over anyone, and
To advance without stepping on anyone or becoming envious of those above me.

The sadness of losing an exemplary mentor, friend, brother, and a confident – all wrapped in one person - is impossible to describe in words or actions.

Daoud was always there and available – ready to share his thoughts, argue his passion for human justice and human rights, his outrage against corruption and tyranny, and his continuous promotion of critical thinking and intellectual reasoning.

Daoud’s love and appreciation of life was equally evident; he thrived on being around friends and colleagues to share a meal, tell a joke, or talk about the music of the Rahbanis and Fairouz, cite some classic Arabic poetry, describe our unique history and struggles, and the uniqueness of our culture as Arabs.

I am so going to miss you my dear Daoud. The last time you called me and said let’s have lunch and chat, I told you that I needed to run an errand and I asked if we could meet the following week. Well, that “following” week never happened and I am now in a state of endless regret. You just left us too soon.

Well, until we meet again my dear Daoud, may you rest in peace. You will be missed, immensely.

The beacon that lit the way of dignity, sound governance and transparency in the Arab world, is slightly dimmer tonight Dawood. Your departure has exhausted much of its glitter. Our causes lost most of their prose. But, as the favorite theme of the times spells it, I can tell you that ‘we’ll get through it’, albeit alone, without your stewardship.

Farewell Dawood. Prepare that Valhalla for us, that where human dignity is a given, but most importantly, that where Sushi & piles of pickled ginger is ........... for free.
