Auntie Doris was part of my family as my Aunt Angela was married to her uncle.
I came to know Auntie Doris on a personal level over 10 years ago when I relocated from Miami to NYC and we spent time together.
Auntie Doris was a very simple human being , kind, honest and with integrity. She accepted individuals as they were and saw the Goodness in each person. She always had kind words to say in her gentle voice.
She was loved by some and respected by others.
She will be dearly missed as she had touched the lives of many including myself. She was truly grateful to her dearest son Dudley Labor, whom she loved/adored.
She is gone but not forgotten and at rest and peace with her Maker.
Adios my gentle Auntie Doris.

I miss you, Mummy. The signs that you were about to leave us were there, but I refused to accept them; I turned a blind eye to them. Instead I told you to relax and sleep so you would wake up feeling better and recover your health.
Lo and behold you were to sleep forever. You have slept and taken your rest. Glory be to God!
I thank God for giving you a fulfilled life; I thank God for delivering you from the pain and suffering of the last few days and I thank God that you said your good byes.
Sleep on and take your rest, Mummy.

RIP, my class 3 teacher! I’ll never forget you. Thanks for your patience and discipline in equal measure, to us at that tender age and stage. You were a ‘safe’ pair of hands for us. Take your rest now, dear Mrs. Labour.

On this Christmas day 2020, I look back. Mummy was alive and well on this day one year ago. She danced, she ate and drank, she marveled as she always does on Christmas lights, and the Christmas tree. She was satisfied. You see it in her eyes!
A hymn came to mind today as we enter the final week of this annus horribilis 2020..words by Nahum Tate, one of our many family's favourite."Through all the changing scenes of life." Shakespeare aptly puts it "the world is a stage, we are mere players in it, they have their exits and entrances." It reminds me of her kind humility, the peace she enjoyed through Christ trusting in Him is good advice to remember, from God through the writer via my dear mother, looking forward to talking to her again in our dear Lord's presence but even more to seeing our savior!

I was literally in tears because it seemed like I just saw her not too long ago and she was looking fine and well. She was a woman of little words but when she spoke... she spoke gentle and so sweet. I never seen this lady make a frown or get upset. Thats what I really adored about her. She kept me in great prayers and offered and poured out her blessings to me when I was sick and also during the passing of my little sister. I will forever always cherish her ❤ kind words and thoughts. Im so sorry for your loss, Alan Labor. Although I had no relation to Ms. Doris, she was known to me as Grandma Labor. That goes to show you how amazing and grand her existence was to me. She will forever be in my heart and memories. Until we meet again, you will be missed & loved Ms. Doris!!

                         "god mammie"
My godmother was like a mother: Kind, loving, big bright smiles with outstretched arms for hugs that welcomes you dearly.

Yes, my godmother was gracious and brought joy and happiness to not only me but all my many cousins and my two siblings who stole her from me as soon as they were able to talk. "They all called her godmammie" and with the same love she embraced them all.

Yes, my godmother drove me to summer school in her car so I could work on my English Language and Math skills. Nervous as I was, she made me believe in myself and my place in the school even though I never attended a "private school" during regular school times. Subsequently I made good grades and got accepted into my High school of choice, MGHS without a hitch, yes she was an educator.

My godmother was like a mother: Embracing my now spouse of 25 years, when I introduced him to her and told her we were planning on getting married in less than a year.
Oh, what great advice she gave us with honesty and love.
Oh, what a party she had for us;
Yes, my godmother continued to call on anniversaries, and birthdays, not only for me, but my children as well.

It was a blessing to let her meet my younger daughter in person this very year in January. I never thought we would be saying goodbye to her in December.

I will never forget the screams from myself and all my cousins every time she visits-"godmammie don cam" as we run towards her, We always get her arms stretched out for sweet, tight genuine hugs and bright smiles.
I will never forget her.

Rest in perfect peace Mrs. Doris Labor.

Gra' ma D,
I'm very much grateful for your life! Yes, it is sad things ended they way it did: Your death was unexpected, gra'ma, it was! But it goes on to show that despite the illness, you were a very strong woman! and one that loved and credited the Lord for everything you were and possessed. Moreover, when I look back at the things God showered you with, I'm more than grateful and forever will be!You just did not keep those blessings to yourself, but you sincerely and generously shared them with others regardless of who they were.- your life definitely was not a waste, but was full and quite rich! All this and more I'm thoroughly thankful for- it makes your passing a little less sour. I'm glad for everything you were gra'ma. You'd be missed, but definitely not forgotten. Rest on, gra'ma.

How do I describe my mother ?:
She was a loving, caring, devoted child, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother with a quiet disposition, lover of peace and tranquility, humble with an ever present sweet smile.
A hard working, conscientious and reliable teacher, head teacher and principal, strict, big on discipline but all with a soft touch.
A philanthropist, who will give to others and deprive herself.
A selfless person, who took nothing for granted and appreciated everything
A Christian believer who firmly put her trust in God in all that she did
Goodness, Mercy and Peace surrounded her all through her years.
She was adventurous, travelled, always willing to learn new things, tried different cuisines, embrace other cultures and enjoyed the presence of other people.
Meticulous about her health, and being an educator, she would ask about basic health practices and practice them, read magazines, "google" and research health conditions.
A track and field enthusiast, even in her old age she would engage in basic exercises.
She lived a long, healthy life full of joy, always grateful for her children, grand children, great grandchildren even at her last days on this earth.
Mummy lived a good, healthy, long life until she finally slept away into the bosom of almighty God. She proclaimed she was JOYFUL, and so she entered just as she lived, joyfully, peacefully and quietly without a fuss!
There is so much more!!
Rest in Peace Mummy, If Love would have saved you, you would not have died!

Her Life

We will tell her life's story

December 9, 2020
She was born in Barthurst, the Gambia on May 6th 1937 to the late Lidall and Clarice Tregson-Roberts. Her father was a Pitman's Shorthand/Typist in the colonial office and private sector, her mother was a homemaker and at a time boarding home matron at the Annie Walsh Memorial School. She was the third of three siblings; Egerton and Franklin predeceased her in 2011 and 2019 respectively. She emigrated along with her family to Sierra Leone in 1939. During most of her childhood she grew up at Rawdon Street in Central Freetown.
Her maternal lineage hails from Nigeria, her great grandfather Andrew Shanu was the earliest Christian convert of Yewa, Yorubaland Nigeria, being baptized by Sir. Samuel Adjayi Crowther in Igbehin, Abeokuta in 1840. Until her passing she was the oldest surviving descendant of Hezekiah Andrew Shanu (Africa's earliest Human Right's Activist on record) of colonial Belgian Congo. Her maternal uncle was Edward Blyden III Sierra Leone renowned Political scientist and Diplomat.
Her paternal lineage was the Aku/Nova Scotia Krio settlers of Bathurst, Gambia and Freetown Sierra Leone. Her paternal great grandmother, Amelia Lake was among the Maroon Settlers of Freetown who played a role in the establishment of St. John's Maroon Church (among the first established churches in the crown colony of Freetown.)
She was educated at the Cathedral Girl's School and the Annie Walsh Memorial School where she received her primary and secondary education. At the Annie Walsh she was a star athlete in the 100m dash, (with the likes of Jestina Ashwood) winning trophies for the school in inter secondary school sports.
In 1957 she attended the University of Sierra Leone at Fourah Bay College and graduated with a Teacher's Certificate. She started her teaching career in the Freetown Municipality schools, excelled in her profession, winning a scholarship to further her studies at the University of Dundee, UK in childhood education and administration.
On 26th September 1962, she married her husband, the late Mr. Dudley Labor at the Wesley Methodist church in Freetown, Serra Leone. Their holy matrimony was blessed with three children. Her late husband predeceased her in 1990.
In 1969 she joined the International School Freetown where she taught for nineteen years and became Head Teacher. In 1988 she was appointed inaugural Principal of the newly reformed Herman Gmeiner SOS Kindercare International School, a position she held until her retirement in 2002. A sports club in the name of Labor house was formed in her honor.
After her retirement she relocated to the Gambia and New York, USA where she spent her latter years until her demise.
She is survived by her children Ms. Vera Labor, Dr. Dudley Labor and Mr. Lorenzo Labor, stepson Roy Thomas-Labor. Grandchildren: Clarice, Alex, Dudley, Chinua. Great grandchildren: Ingadi, Geneinde, and Kimani.
Several relatives and many friends at home and in the diaspora including the Labor, Tregson-Roberts, Taylor, Shanu-Taylor, Blyden, Kaye, Shanu's of Lagos, Europa Garber of Banjul, Spring, Angela Williams of London, Yomi Elliot, Christy Akhigbade, and Samuel Taylor families of New York, USA. Members of Christ Church, Gambia; Christ Church Riverdale, NY, USA. Blessing Oladejo of Lagos.
She was a devoted wife and mother, reliable, conscientious and hard working. She lived a Christian Life, trusted in God in all that she did and accomplished. She was humble, loved solitude, appreciated quietness and peace. At her last days she loudly proclaimed how joyful she was and how blest she was having caring children and a family that love her.
We will end by saying gifts or money is important, but motherly love and bond was of paramount importance! If love could have saved her, she would not have died!
Rest On Mummy! Rest in Perfect Peace.

By her children, grand and greatgrandchildren

Grandma a name she said I gave to her. Before she passed  I told her to please get well because I needed her. I needed her love, her counsel, her prayers, I needed her assurance and smile, I needed her to see her great grand children grow and to teach them how to love.
She was wonderful, She was Godly, beautiful, patient, kind, tolerant (she was kind to all irrespective of spiritual financial or academic status or age )she knew how to embrace people and make them feel loved. She was sweet, warm, peace loving - She was deliberate in not being petty, she was deliberate in how she lived her life, she made personal problems look trivial, extremely generous but prudent, pleasant but took no nonsense , she disciplined in a way you just had to do better, she was strong and easy to cry all at the same time. she was not judgemental. She was a friend to the most unlikely people, she loved looking good but was not vain, she taught me psalms by heart even before I could read.  No matter how hard I smiled she was one to ask me what's wrong with you because she knew me well
In her last moments she had no regrets, she said she was joyful, she told us she loved us, she said she would pray for us, she said thanks, she appreciated God  because with all she had experienced in life she didn't imagine she would live this long.
I honor her, I celebrate her, she was a phenomenal woman, a lady, daughter, wife, mother, grand mother, great grand mother, friend, a leader, a source of help, a source of joy she was special she was victorious by the grace of God, she was Doris Rose Elizabeth Labor nee Tregson-Robert all in Golden letters.
I will miss you greatly, we all will.
Rest in God's perfect peace.
