MY SOJOURN - - “By God’s Grace, I DARED”
I was born on Wednesday the 29th of September, 1937 at Dodowa, to the late Mr. Ebenezer Yirenkyi McCarthy, an Educationist, and Madam Josephine Angeley Aba McCarthy (nee Ako Nai), of La, a business woman. They really took very good care of all five children and others. I schooled at Asamankese Methodist School and continued at Mfantsipim Secondary School, Cape Coast; obtaining my O and A levels in 1957 and 1959. At school I was a keen hockey player and captained the school hockey team.

I attended the university of Bern School of medicine in December 1967. I undertook further postgraduate training at Children’s Hospital Bern (Paediatric Surgery) and Obstetrics-Gynaecology in Zurich and Baden all in Switzerland. In 1972, I obtained the specialist qualification in Obstetrics-Gynaecology (Swiss Medical Association) and worked as Oberarzt in Women’s Hospital Baden from then until I returned home with my family in 1977. In between, I married my very loved wife Nelly Gertrud Reber in 1968. In Ghana, I worked for a period of 5 years at the Regional Hospital in Tamale. During this period, I ventured also into rice farming and thus raised some capital to help later kick-start the Sinel Specialist Hospital in Tema. The family moved down to Tema in 1982 where a 3-bedroom house and an outhouse were renovated to serve as the nucleus of Sinel Specialist Hospital (Sinel represents Silvia and Nelly). I worked very hard and we were able to move into our own private house and the new building of the hospital in 1989 and 1990 respectively. I wish to thank our financial supporters in the construction of the hospital namely, the Reber-Family (my in-laws); Mr. and Mrs. Roland Frutig; Mr. Frank Schneider and his father Prof. Rudolf Schneider; and Mr. Willi Von Dach all of Switzerland.... to be cont...
