For Liz and her children

September 12, 2022

  • So lively persit the souvenirs of the Parisian epoch of Liz, Bernard, Charles and Doddy ; the pilgrimages to Notre Dame de Chartres in the steps of Charles Péguy.
  • The wedding of Liz and Bernard in the family house, the ‘Sun Trap’  at Storington, where I was dubbed best man ;
  • From Queens NY, the exploration and discovery by car of the beauty of Long Island, which was to become the retreat of the family ;
  • My numerous stays in Bellport welcoming home during my fellowships first at Harvard in the seventies, then at BU in the nineties. Evelyne and Liz were offering their best to make of these, havens of peace and regeneration.
  • The visits of Liz and Bernard to Courcelles, Chevreuse, and even Couffinal en Lauragais when Ali and James were still babies.

We will meet again one day.
I cannot believe that all these ‘lot of loves’
With their fancy touch of art’s grace are for ever gone.
They were for us on Earth the icon of the Divine.

An Inimitable Wit

We always looked forward to reading Liz's stories in the Brookhaven Bulletin. Her writing was lively, her wit sublime, sharp, but never mean-spirited. She could joke in English and French. Her spontaneous puns had us all in stitches at French Club and other social gatherings. Wish we'd written them down! That twinkle in her eye in all these wonderful photos conveys her beautiful spirit. She was always fun, no matter what the circumstances, and brave in adversity. Our condolences to her family, to whom she was devoted. Liz will be missed by many.

I only knew Liz for 8 or 9 years but miss her warmth, her generosity, and her trove of stories, recounted with her succulent British accent. She was so caring, gracious and funny! We corresponded by email during the last year and I am sharing excerpts of her answers here to illustrate her inimitable sense of humor, and the brave front she put up during her painful ordeal. Thanks for all the pictures. I can't believe she is no longer with us.

Liz was my neighbor and coworker for over 30 years. She was a lady of uncommon kindness and intellect a quiet ‘Lady’ in all ways. Some of my fondest memories of her were in the PA lunchroom where a group of us would attempt to dove the daily NY Times crossword puzzle. Liz was our literary specialist drawing on her ‘public’ school background. She will be missed.  We mourn her passing along with her family and friends.  Elaine & Derek
