Jay was born in a modest home on the Hillsborough river near 40th Street belonging to close friends of his mother.  Her maiden name was Doris Smith.  His father was Eldred Carter.  His father passed away a few years later and when his mother married Jodie Stafford, Jay was adopted by him.
When I met Jay in high school he was known by many names.  His relatives called him Junior, his teachers called him Eldred, and his close friends called him Jake or Jay.  I asked him "what should I call you" and he replied "you choose".  So I chose Jay because that seemed to fit him the best.
