When I was a kid, I was probably about 5 or 6, Grandma came to visit. We were living at the Marble Ct or Circle, can’t remember the exact name now. It was later in the afternoon, after she arrived, I went down to the large playground that was near our house. I decided to swing on the swing set, however, the swing set seats were a little too high for me at the time, and there were large at least large to me at the time, Red and Black Ant hills. These Ants were huge and they were everywhere and under every swing seat. If I wanted to swing I had to kind of run and jump onto the swing set and hope I didn’t get any ants on me. Well it just so happened that this particular time, I got stung/bit by a Red ant in between the toes on my right foot. Man that pain was something else, I started crying and then ran all the way back to the house. Grandma was inside doing something, and being the nurse she immediately asked what was wrong. I told her that I got bit by an ant, she then asked me why I didn't have any shoes on, I told her I had shoes but that I didn’t know how to tie my shoes (I guess at the time I didn’t put two and two together, that if you wear shoes you will not get stung). She then had me go get my shoes, she told me that she was going to teach me how to tie my shoes so that I could go play and not worry about the Ants. She then sat me in her lap, and spent the next 10-15 minutes teaching me how to tie my shoes. I still tie them the exact same way today. Now every time I tie them, it reminds me of her and how the smallest things can have the most impact on a persons life. My life changed that day, and Grandma, I have not been bit by an ant in between my toes since then. I love you Grandma!

Julie, loved playing the spoons and teaching my children how to do it too. One of my last visits with her was to help her get her sewing machine threaded and teach her how her new machine worked. She was making curtains. She loved sewing and we talked about it many times. She actually pierced my ears for me when she lived in Newburg, OR. She did a great job and i have enjoyed wearing my earrings for many years. She let us bottow her old green car for awhile when we lived in Tacoma because our car was on the fritz. She truly was a very giving person and loved to tell stories. She will be very missed by all who knew her. Mom, rest in peace and know you are truly loved.

Grandma Hammer, she loved me. I know where she is in the spirit world, she loves her family. This is from me Hannah and I love her. I love her very much. We can't hear her, we can't hug her now, I wish she was still in Hawaii where I could still see her.

From me and mommy.

A poem I wrote about grandma when she came to Hawaii to live with her dementia.

Remember me
When my view begins to blur
And the stars no longer shine
When my ears forget to hear
And the music fades away

Remember me,
When your touch no longer reaches
And my soul is far away
When my mind begins to wander
And the words no longer come

When the darkness comes to set
And my voice no longer speaks

When I can’t remember you,
Remember me.

I am grateful that she didn't forget us, and was able to have those she loved with her at the end.

Love you grandma.

Best Grandma in life, when I think of you, I have the feeling of love, kindness and service, you were that and more. What an example for me, always willing to help others no matter what. You show me all the love ❤️ when I came to the United States for the first time. And when I had Jazmin and Aarón I remember you help a lot with them singing and dancing because you love to do that. For me you are the best cooker in life. I will love you for ever Grandma Julie. Hasta el cielo te mando un beso y un gran abrazo !! Te amo por siempre ♥️♥️

Every time I think of Mom I think of music. We sang everywhere, doing dishes or walks everywhere we went. That habit was picked up by me and my kids and now my kids and their kids. A wonderful legacy that will continue on. We will miss you joining in. Yes, even with the spoons. So grateful to have an eternal family
