Kenny was born to Johnny & Judith (deceased) Penland; along with four other brothers and sisters, Candice Smith, Carl Penland, Kevin Penland (deceased), and Cathie Moore.  He leaves behind three daughters: Teah Hughes, Samantha Bixby, and Kendra Penland; as well as two grandchildren, Zoey Fariole and Archer Bixby.  He will forever be remembered as a faja, a loving grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all.

We invite you to share your stories and memories about Kenny via the Tribute section or the Stories tab located on this page.  Also, Kenny was like a mythical creature and was rarely caught in photographs.  If you are one of the lucky ones to have a caught an image of Kenny, we ask you to please share it for all to see.

Teah, Samantha, and Kendra invite you to join them for a Memorial Service in honor of Kenny on July 24, 2021 at 2 p.m. at the Clay County Recreation Park in Hayesville, North Carolina.

Kenny was a lover of books and the written word. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of the following charities:

1) United Through Reading: https://www.classy.org/give/130757/#!/donation/che...
United Through Reading’s mission is to connect military families through the read-aloud experience, and we are able to deliver many of these stories each year. In fact, in 2016 we delivered more than eight million. But there are still millions of stories left to send home. This year we are working to close the gap and ensure that every military child can reap the benefits of storytime with their far-away parent. After all, we believe that every child deserves a bedtime story.

2) Pajama Program: https://give.pajamaprogram.org/give/247710/#!/dona...
Pajama Program starts with the tools for a comforting bedtime routine for children from infancy through age 18: cozy pajamas and an inspiring storybook. Our Sleep Health Education programming provides children, educators, parents and caregivers with resources and strategies to develop and maintain comforting bedtime routines.

3) Project Night Night: http://www.projectnightnight.org/donate-money/
The mission of Project Night Night is to provide free Night Night Packages to homeless children from birth to pre-teen who need our childhood essentials to have a concrete and predictable source of security and increased exposure to high-quality literacy materials during this time of upheaval. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children’s book, and a stuffed animal — all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag.

Woof Woof Woof

June 30, 2021
A funny story about Ken that I forgot about and Elaine reminded me of a week ago

A couple years ago we had to evict one of our tenant's about two weeks before Christmas.  His baby mama (they were always on again off again and at this point they were off) got really upset with us to the point that I had to call the law.  Then she kept blowing up Elaine's phone with nasty text.

I was running on about three days with zero sleep and about 8 pm I finally laid down and went SOUND asleep.  About three hours later Elaine is shaking me away and trying to tell me the alarm is going off and the dog is going "woof woof woof" (the control screen for our alarm system is set to make different sounds depending on which door get's opened, and the carport door is rottweiler's barking).

When I finally realized what Elaine was saying I went storming out of my room toward the kitchen yelling at Elaine to call 911.  I was ready to kick that dumb bimbo's butt (I truly thought she had been stupid enough to break into our house).  Rounding the corner of the fridge I found Ken standing there trying to get the chair that we always put in front of the door to remind us that the alarm is set, out of his way so he could then try and figure out how to turn off the alarm.

From that point onward, if the carport door was closed when he got here he would walk around to the office and ring the buzzer, for fear of setting off the "woof woof woof" again.....I would give anything to have him cause the dogs to bark again!!!!!!

On our couch

June 8, 2021
Ken used to show up unannounced and then spend any were from 1 day to as long as a week camped out on our couch watching what ever he wanted (we have every channel Comcast offer's and about every streaming service there is).  If I talked to him and he said he would be at the yard the next day all I had to say was "I'll make my Alfredo sauce" and we were guaranteed that he would show up.  We have an alarm system on our house but us three old biddies felt safer with him here then with him on the road and the alarm set.  We could never get enough of his visits and right now the place on the couch that we always called "Ken's seat" is not allowed to be sat in, and it will take me a long, Long, LONG time to stop looking for his red pick up to be parked in the drive when I return from town.  He LOVED showing us photos of Archer and funny post from Facebook.  In the past week I've had to stop making my coffee to sit and cry because it dawned on me that never again will I get to ask him "you ready for a cup?".  Today I made my first trip to Walmart since learning of his passing and it dawned on me that I won't need to keep as much coffee on hand any longer.  Everytime he came to visit I always told him that I need one of his special hugs.  My heart is broken in a trillion pieces and I can only imagine how his family is feeling.  Just know that y'all are in our thoughts and Prayers!!!!!!
