The non-hip THS Group

April 8, 2014

The guys in the group and Margie were juniors and Ruth and Britta were seniors. Margie dated Rich Delahanty, who now lives in New Orleans. We did everything together as a group, not being in with the 'popular' ones in our classes. Ruth drove and we had lots of fun. No drinking or drugs, just dancing and joking. Chuck and I got to go to two senior proms, onced with Ruth and Britta, and again at our own senior prom. Chuck Spring lives near me (David) in the Washington DC area. Ruth lives in the Denver area and runs a day-care center. I think Britta lives in San Diego, but I haven't seen her since college.

I kept in touch with everyone except Britta, and enjoyed many visits with Margie and Herb at their various U.S. base asssignments, and most recently (10 years or so back) several times when they lived in San Antonio.  I will miss the Christmas letters and news about Volks marching. I still have the wooden tubes that Turkish mothers inserted in baby diapers to drain off the waste that they brought me when stationed in Turkey.

We first met when Margery had a summer job while still in college. It was a technical library for Bell Labs in New York. We both worked there & quickly became friends along with another woman. Something simply clicked yet it's impossible for me to define or describe why. All 3 of of us had lunch together & we certainly heard all about Herb (then only dating). We remained friendly after her summer job ended &   sometime later, we attended their wedding. Margery was always so enthusiastic and upbeat about everything. You heard it in her voice.
I will always remember her peeling and eating an orange every day once she found out that a manager none of us liked, hated the smell of an orange. She sat right outside of his office and thoroughly enjoyed her afternoon snack (much to our delight).
Time went on and most of our contact was through her Christmas cards but I'm so happy Margery was a part of my life.

It's funny what you think of first when you find out someone's passed away - the first thing I thought of was how Mom used to help me make these Christmas Tree crafts when I was little - we'd take ice cream cones and turn them upside down, then frost them with green icing and stick M&Ms all over them to look like ornaments. Then I remembered watching her favorite Soaps, General Hospital and All My Children, with her while I was in High School and College. In the days before TiVo and DVRs she faithfully recorded the shows on VHS tapes, and we'd watch them in the evening. After about 8:30pm or so we'd start joking around and laughing and would carry on so much that Dad would get exasperated, come out of the bedroom and give us "The Look" down over the railing from the second floor. She was really funny - I don't know if people knew that about her.
