Matthew was a dear friend to my husband and one of the few people who he could just be himself around. They hit it off the first time they met and went on to have many adventures (including bonding over their love of raw oysters!). I remember Matthew for his kind smile and nature, he always seemed to be smiling! He is such a gentle soul, very smart, honest, and curious about the world—with a great sense of humor too! He brought us a great parenting book and classical music cd’s to my daughter’s baptism as a gift, so very thoughtful and we will cherish that memento forever. We were beyond happy for him for meeting his dear Yoojin, his eyes would light up and sparkle any time he mentioned her. Matthew, may you rest in eternal peace, our prayers are with you always. Thank you for showing us what true friendship looks like.
We also express our deepest sympathy for his family and sweet Yoojin. Lord have mercy +

Matthew, you were one of the best friends I’ve ever had. I’ll never forget you, the Notre Dame/Georgia Tech game, the many dinners, you attending my children’s baptisms. You were always there for me in the most important moments of my young family. I’ll be thinking about you this year when I’m hunting. I know you were excited for this upcoming season. I want you to know that my family will be praying for you every night. You truly are one of the best friends I’ve ever had. I love you, Matthew.

Eternal rest grant unto Matthew, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Until we meet again, King.

Your loyal friend, Patrick

Matthew's Journey

May 6
For those who didn’t know Matthew, he was

Born November 2, 1989, in Lafayette, Indiana, where his parents were graduate students at Purdue University.  Matthew passed on April 29, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.

His parents are probably the only two people who call him Matthew!  He preferred Matt. He was and is deeply loved, and will be deeply missed, by his family, his fiancée Yoojin Bae, friends and colleagues.

He was a Financial Analyst at SENTA Partners in Atlanta. He graduated with honors from Samford University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, and was a Certified Public Accountant in Georgia. While at Samford, he tutored Student Athletes who were enrolled in the Business Calculus course. In high school in Vestavia Hills, he was a member of a national champion Math Team as well as a participant in the Scholars Bowl.

Matthew was a voracious reader, and he had a wide range of interests, including Spiritual, Theological, and Philosophical works.I don’t know anyone else who would request—I don’t remember, either a birthday or Christmas gift—a copy of Aquinas’ Summa Theologica. I suggested he start with Volume 1!  He was quite conservative concerning his religion. I don’t think he would disagree if I said anything past Aquinas is superfluous!  The 13th Century was fine with him!

He was also an accomplished musician, playing piano, guitar and drums. While in high school and college, he performed in marching, jazz, and a few rock bands. Some of his recent interests included Chopin's piano Nocturnes, Debussy's Reverie, and various blues guitar pieces by Eric Clapton.  He liked musical challenges!

He is survived by his parents, David and Jae Young, his brother Michael, and his fiancée, Yoojin Bae. Matthew and his parents were scheduled to fly in  August to Korea to meet Yoojin’s family.  We hope we can still say, like new in-laws, we’ve gained a daughter!

Matt, my son, be at peace!
