Although it is very painful to say goodbye to my father, I am comforted that this is not a final farewell because I will see him again. He lived a life I can only hope to emulate- my family stands strong due to the personal sacifices he made.
-He was a Christian, and not in the nominal sense. He lived a Christ-like life. The virtues of grace, forgiveness, mercy, love, patience, and faithfulness were present in his life. He served the Lord, not just on Sundays, but at work, and when no one was looking.
-He was a teacher in every sense of the word, and sought every opportunity to not just teach but to also learn. He taught me to be comfortable with who I am and to be content with what I have, balancing this with the motivation to become better, and to only measure myself and successes against the person I was yesterday.
-We shared literary minds- my voracious reading appetite was fueled by his constant supply of books and magazines he bought me from the world over. What African man reads his daughter bedtime stories? My dad did- I had hoped that my children would one day enjoy his bedtime stories and African stories.
-He was a romantic man- a balance of gentleness and strength. He truly loved our mother, and would do anything within his power to provide, protect and care for her. He planned her birthdays months in advance, bought her cards and flowers, and served his legendary french toast breakfasts on saturdays.
Like a dedicated teacher and scientist, he looked for every opportunity to learn and also to teach. He taught me how to forgive even when the offender has not apologized, afterall I hear him saying " Christ died for even them- no exceptions."
My challenge now is to celebrate his life and not let his sacrifices go to waste. Being the professor's daughter, I can't resist the opportunity to give pointers so I would like to convey the high lights of what I culled from my life experience with my father:
-Be honest and without guile
- Be hardworking and reliable
- Give without expectations
- Appreciate who and what you have
- Be comfortable with who you are
- Hone your talents
- Let your daily existence be in service to God
I like the New English Translation of Psalm 90:12 "So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely."
See you later, Daddy. We will meet again. I love you.
