A TRIBUTE TO OUR BROTHER
“My name is Mr. R. R. Davis!” As a child, this is how he would respond when anyone asked him his name - of which he was very proud. Ruel Radcliffe Davis was “a little gentleman,” respected and loved by his family and the community at large. Affectionately called “Clevey,” our brother was adored and cherished, by his siblings, other family members, and friends. After our father and eldest brother immigrated to England, and although very young himself, he assumed the role of father which he played well, and was therefore very protective of his sisters. His role became even more distinct after the death of our mother.
We have many fond memories of our time growing up as kids together, “up a yard.” These special childhood memories will always bring smiles to our faces. Many nights we would sit together on the verandah and sing gospel songs, play games, tell stories or just give jokes, laughing so loudly like we didn’t have a care in the world. He was so jovial and always in high spirits that whenever he was around, there was never a sad moment.
We admire how knowledgeable and astute he was in his business and social interactions, and his thought process in constructing, stating, and firmly defending his opinions on any subject matter. Sometimes this firmness was construed as stubbornness, however, he was usually on target. We were so proud of “Mr. R.R. Davis” when he started working as a fireman at the Savlamar Fire Brigade Station and was even more proud when he was promoted through the ranks to District Officer. He looked so stately in his uniform, commanding the respect and love of his family and friends.
For those of us living in the United States, it was always a joy returning to Jamaica on vacations to a welcoming environment where he made provisions to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable visit. As recently as last year (2022) on our last visit, he prepared some of the best-known Jamaican dishes for us. These include Curried Goat, Manish Water and Cow’s Feet, to name a few. He was always so giving. Oh, how we’re going to miss him. Life will never be the same as another link has been taken from our chain. Yet we are comforted that one day we will all be together again where we will never say goodbye.
When family ties are broken and loved ones have to part, it leaves a wound that never heals, but looking back at the memories upon the path we walk, we bless the years we had with you and leave the rest to God.
Our brother, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure, but rest in peace, your pleasant memories will forever be in our hearts, in your own special place.
