Vote of Thanks Memorial for the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, former Director-DPC and Programme Mana

February 23, 2021
Good afternoon all,

On behalf of Management and Staff of NMCP and the RBM Partnership, I want to thank God Almighty for His mercy and grace over us and for making it possible for us to actualise this memorial in honour of the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, former Director-DPC and Programme Manager-NMCP, MoHS.

To all Sympathisers and Partners, we are grateful you are able to make it this ceremony despite your busy schedules coupled with COVID-19 pandemic fight. Some sympathisers would have loved to be physically present, but could not due to circumstances beyond their control but rather joined through virtual connection. This demonstrates the high level of partnership between you as individuals or organisations/institutions, the NMCP and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

This partnership has been strengthened over the years by the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith through his management and leadership with the hope of eliminating and finally eradicating malaria in Sierra Leone. He always emphasized to us that the fight against malaria cannot be won without stronger partnership.

On behalf of the MoHS, NMCP and the RBM Partnership, I thank you very much and may God richly bless you abundantly.

To the NMCP staff and RBM Partnership, I will be remiss in my duty if I fail to appreciate and thank you all. Thank you for all your efforts in putting this activity together.

The late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith believed in team work and capacity building. He usually advised and encouraged us on team work and to think out of the box focusing on achievement of set targets. To promote team work, some of his exact words he usually told us was, “do it the Arsenal way”. I will go on and on, on and on but time could not permit me.

I want to thank the leadership and the entire MoHS. A special thanks to the NMCP staff for standing by him to ensure that we achieve our set targets as a team and move malaria fight from grass to an admirable level.

Finally, I want to thank myself for taking this bold step to stand here and give this vote of thanks.

May the soul of Dr. Samuel Juana Smith and souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace. Amen. God bless us all.

Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, a brother that will ever stay in my memory!!!

February 11, 2021
I have lost an eternal brother: Dr. Samuel Juana Smith on Sunday 7th February 2021. It was a very late cold morning, when I visited him. He smiled at me and I gave him a tug at the shoulder. Few minutes when I left him I got a distressing call that he has passed. I told Allah: "Alhamdulilaihi but why Dr. Samuel Juana Smith"? And Allah whispered in my heart: "Inna Lilahi Wa Inna Lilahi Rajion" (From Me you come and unto Me you shall return). The Lord Almighty Allah shall never be questioned. I have wiped away my tears with a heavy heart. I will meet Samuel one day in Ajanna and forever be happy with him. Rest my brother rest forever!

Dear Dr Smith  my mentor, supervisor  and lecturer at COMAHS.  You have been a beacon of support to my success as an undergraduate which has continued up till this moment as my director for which you have always been the person I have relied on for solid advice.  I still can't believe that you are gone too soon .
May  God continue to open doors of blessings to all of your family as we mourn you now. May they always have someone to support them and may the angels of heaven receive you under their wings. Indeed you have gone too soon . May your soul rest in perfect peace.

Dr. Smith -May your memories be a blessing

"Praise we the wise and brave and strong,
Who graced their generation,
Who helped the right, and fought the wrong,
And made our folk a nation."
Your great work on earth will always be remembered as a contribution to humanity.
You left us too soon. May your soul rest in perfect peace and may your memories be blest.

Dr Smith, the community of Bombali will forever miss you so much. You were the first DMO I worked with in Bombali. You were a mentor, you touched the lives of so many of us and laid the foundation from which we sprank to be what we are today. The sad news of your death was the deepest regret in our hearts, so devastating to say the least. Your memories will forever lingers in our hearts. Take your rest brother. May the Good Lord have mercy upon you and raise you amongst the Saints in heaven.RIP

Painfully Shared

Oh death...who would believe that such a beacon of hope, a source of determination and a loving father would depart this world at such a time. I type this in deep tears but with belief that you're in heaven watching over your loving family as they sorely mourn you. I remember working closely with you towards the fight against Malaria in Sierra Leone. When you gave your presentation in Dakar about the introduction of Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Infants (IPTi) in the fight against malaria in SierraLeone. You were so passionate about it and ended up attracting attention from all. You had plans to see that Malaria is eliminated in Sierra Leone. Today, we are mourning you. We are pained by the feeling that you'll never be with us again in person but are consoled by the belief that Heaven is your place. You've left a huge vacuum and we pray that God will see us through. May Muelda, your beloved wife; Victoria and the other kids reap the fruits of your labor as they painfully come to terms with your sudden departure. Rest well in Heaven and see you when the day comes.
