Tribute to Papa Chief Christopher Ogunbanjo
(Dec 14, 1923 - October 7, 2023)

Chief Papa Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo was a profound family man, who was not only interested in his immediate family but also in his extended family, and even strangers. Thank you Papa for being my angel. Say hello to your beautiful late wife, Mama Hilda, who during her visit to Maryland chatted with me on the phone a few times and encouraged me to return back to Nigeria after many decades in the US, and she said “even, if it’s only for short visits.” Thank you for the warm welcome you gave me during my numerous visits to you. Thank you for sharing good knowledge and understanding of modern technology especially the features on your iPhone that you proudly showed me and the need to always learn a new word daily. Thank you for the love and warmth you gave to my husband at your house in Ikoyi during his first visit to Nigeria and when I brought our eldest son to meet you in Erunwon during his first visit to Nigeria. He still talks about the memorable time he had and the feasts that you provided for the occasion.
We shall miss you Papa Chris until we meet again in Glory, but we rest in the knowledge that all that you stood for, and all of your greatness will be carried on by your family and passed down through the generations to come.

Adieu Our Grand Cousin

Tribute to Late Pa Chris Oladipo Ogunbanjo.

I join family and friends to celebrate a life well spent by late Pa Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo. Papa had early life opportunity to be the son of an Anglican cleric. He seized such rare opportunity at his early age to listen to parental advise to become a good Christian, well educated and notable person in life. He depicted Christian life, leadership, a giver and role model for someone like me to emulate. His life style, coupled with the Grace of God made him to have lived long for almost a century. I personally emulate his life style and wish to live long like Papa. Your legacy will live for ever. Adieu Papa Chris, Omo Eleruwon Sodimeso. May Papa’s soul Rest In Perfect Peace.

In loving memory of my dearest Papa Chris Oladipo Ogunbanjo, who recently left us at the remarkable age of 99, just a few months shy of his 100th birthday. His passing reminds us that God's plans are always best.

Papa was an incredible icon, a grandfather figure who blessed my life with his presence and wisdom. His influence has made me wiser beyond my years, and I can't help but smile at how much more foolish I might have been without his guidance.

If I've ever wished you "Wealth of Health" on your birthday, it was because of Papa. He taught me that health is the most important wealth of all. Even at 90 and beyond, he was active and could still be seen shopping at the mall. His mental acuity was astonishing; he could recall dates, phone numbers, and home addresses effortlessly.

I remember a time when I lived in the UK and visited Nigeria to launch Afriproducts.com, the first online payment portal. During a strategy meeting with colleagues, I mentioned knowing Papa. Their excitement was palpable, but I assured them we could see him right away. They couldn't believe it, knowing how busy he was, but when I called him, he welcomed us immediately. That connection led to Chief Subomi Balogun becoming the Chairman of our project.

Papa's generosity knew no bounds. He was always ready to help, urging me not to be shy about asking for more. He was tech-savvy, using iPads and iPods and sharing his music playlists with enthusiasm. He achieved remarkable success as the Chairman of over 14 top-notch companies, yet his humility remained intact, always crediting his accomplishments to God's ordination, not his own power.

He was a giver in every sense, building a legacy of humility and kindness. Though I hadn't seen Papa in a while, I had hoped to visit him again in Nigeria. Regrettably, it never came to be. But I'm profoundly grateful to have known him and shared so many precious moments. I'll miss him, but his memories will forever remind me of his impactful presence in our lives.

His Life

Chief Dr. Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo OFR, CON

October 11, 2023
Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo (14 December 1923 – 7 October 2023) was a Nigerian corporate lawyer and philanthropist from Ogun State. He was an early advocate of domiciliary accounts in Nigeria which later came to existence through the promulgation of the Foreign Currency Decree 18 of 1985. In the late 1960s, he was among the group of businessmen who supported local equity participation in foreign firms operating in Nigeria.

Ogunbanjo was born on 14 December 1923, to the family of Daniel Ajayi Ogunbanjo, a catechist from Erunwon, Ijebu, Ogun State. He was educated at St Phillips Primary School, Aiyetoro, Ile-Ife before proceeding to Oduduwa College, Ife for his secondary education in 1936. Two years later, he transferred to Igbobi College in Lagos. He began work in 1942 as a junior clerk in the Judicial Dept in Enugu and was subsequently transferred to Port Harcourt. He left the civil service in 1946 to study law at the University of London, Ogunbanjo obtained a law degree in 1949 and was called to the bar in 1950. On his return from London, he worked briefly for the law firm of H.O. Davies before establishing his own private practice; his firm added two more partners, Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Michael Odesanya in 1952 to become Samuel, Chris and Michael Solicitors. The partnership was dissolved in 1960 and his practice became Chris Ogunbanjo & Co. The new practice specialized in corporate law. Ogunbanjo's familiarity with corporate law led him to be a significant shareholder in various Nigerian companies like: West African Batteries, Metal Box Toyo, Union Securities, 3M Nigeria, ABB Nigeria, Roche Nigeria and Chemical and Allied Products Ltd.
Ogunbanjo married Hilda Ladipo in 1953. His wife was editor of AMBER, a women's lifestyle magazine established in the 1960s but later acquired by Daily Times. Chris Ogunbanjo died on 7 October 2023, at the age of 99

GOOD NIGHT PAPA

October 23, 2023

It is with a deep sense of grief that I convey to the entire family our condolences on the passing of your beloved patriarch - Chief Chris Ogunbanjo who passed away peacefully two months before his 100th birthday on Saturday, October 7 2023.

Papa's achievements have been sufficiently published. From afar, a person can have a fair idea of who he is. For me, I have been permitted the honour and privilege of crossing his path and learning at his feet. Anyone who has been granted the privilege of knowing him this closely would realize that his death is not only a great loss to his children but to the less fortunate ones that he added much value to their lives and by extension, the entire society.
He lived an outstanding life so selfless that every one that came across him was touched with his love and generosity. How I wish I had met him much earlier in my life to learn to learn more at his feet.
I remember him for the great love and affection he showed me and my family since his friend and my late Uncle Chief Olu Akinfosile introduced me to him after my MSc programme in 1994. He restored to me and many Nigerians the honour, confidence and courage to face the future. He was a father in a million NOT a boss. In his magnanimity without any strings attached to it, he sponsored the education of my children from Nursery schools to the University.
On account of his charitable disposition, my son also whistled his way through his Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy) and certification to practice pharmacy in the United Kingdom. Indeed, Papa was my greatest benefactor of all time.
Papa did similar things to make life less irksome to many other weary, helpless and underprivileged. His compassion transcends gender and social class and his kindness to humanity was spontaneous and knew no bounds.
He assisted  many indigent Nigerians that inundated him with appeals to offset their medical and educational bills on a 'daily' basis. He was also saddled with the herculean task of addressing appeals from many unemployed Nigerians for letters of introduction, which he addressed by giving them letters of introduction to the C.E.O of his companies and other prominent Nigerians. My younger brother, who was a prodigy of his benevolence in this regard is now a professor of petroleum Geology and sedimentology at the University of Lagos.

During his lifetime, I was tempted to pray to God to allow him to live forever. It has just dawned on me that, this prayer has been answered by God, as what he did with his life is a testimony of one who will live forever
Papa's life will remain a great inspiration to the coming generation who will endeavour to live by the highest ethical and moral standards demonstrated by him. To be well born, well bred, successful, yet humble and invariably polite, yet direct were blessings given to him, but not given to many. No wonder he lived a fulfilled life and died peacefully.
For the remainder of my life, I shall remember his values and legacies of honesty, integrity, hard work and his unparalleled care of his family and humanity.
I pray God to forgive his mistakes and reward his good deeds with a befitting peace in heaven. May God give the children the fortitude to bear this painful loss
