While I’m still in shock and saddened about the loss of Pat, I would like to share some stories that I will forever remember and cherish. Like Pat, he always liked to tell stories.
My first OSIsoft Users Conference was in 2002 in Monterey, CA, as a customer. I was so impressed and inspired by all the happy and smiling faces. Before I knew it, I was on stage sharing the good stories of PI. After my talk at 2004 UC, Pat came to me saying “I really like your talk”. I asked, “what do you like about”? Pat said one word, “enthusiasm.” I said “how can we not love PI? In 2006, I joined OSIsoft and became part of the OSI-family and Pat called me an “evangelist”. My passion and belief, the love of the product, our customers, and the company, have been growing even stronger since. Pat created an amazing product and an amazing company, with loyal and appreciative customers all over the world.
Some of the conversations/talks with Pat throughout the years that I still remember clearly as if it were yesterday…just a few examples…
- I need to have the right direction and vision for the company, because so many people (employees and their families, customers and their families, partners and their families, etc.) will be affected by any decision I make.
- "We sell what we make.” - Be honest, don’t lie or cheat to get the deal. I don’t want that money; I would rather you walk away. Don’t jeopardize your job.
- One time at a customer event, customers asked Pat, why not making PI as a SCADA, all you need is control. Pat said, why do I compete with all the SCADA vendors? Now I’m working with all of them.
- When a lot of electric utility customers started implementing PI-based CBM (Condition-based Maintenance) about 15+ years ago, we wrote a step-by-step blueprint as an implementation guideline. Customers asked Pat, why not packaging CBM as an “Application” (at that time, we all tried to avoid this “A” word). Pat said, I have eight different industries, every industry has different requirements, why should I develop eight solutions? Now I offer one product and every industry can use it to develop it.
- One day Pat saw me in San Leandro office and asked, “why are you not traveling?” I said “Pat, it’s the end of the year, most customers are off for the holidays.” Pat said, “Then go to sell in China or in India.” I said, “Pat, I am not in sales.” Pat said, “Either you make, or you sell. Everyone here sells.”
- Pat never used PowerPoint slides for his talks. He said, “If you don’t use slides, people focus on what you say, with slides they focus on what you show on the slides.”
- Pat remembered every customer’s presentation down to details, especially from the electric grid. On many occasions including recently, he mentioned the story about when Hurricanes Gustav hitting Louisiana, how Entergy using PI and PMU synchrophasor data to detect and manage the islanding in New Orleans and seamlessly restore and resynchronize the system. The islanding event happened in 2008! It's because Pat cared!
It’s still shocking and heartbreaking to me of Pat's passing. I am very thankful for all the support from Pat and family.
My deepest condolences to Patty, Jenny, Kathy, Mike and the family.
