Dr. Leonard Kufeji was an enigma of the medical profession, an astute administrator and a lion-hearted professional par-excellence. This is indeed a sad loss to the Past President's Forum, Faculty of Surgery and indeed the College especially those of us that worked very closely with the revered Dr. Leonard Kufeji, on the Governing Board of the College when he was the President of the College (Jan 2010-Dec 2011). He was humane and his leadership style was one of all-inclusive.

May the Lord comfort his family and may his gentle soul rest in perdect peace. Amen.

I pray that the Lord will grant Mowunmi, Tayo, Dapo and the entire Kufeji family the fortitude to bear this loss.
Since my Dad (Akinkunmi Kufeji) passed away in 1993, Doctor-Kufeji (as fondly called by many) was always there as a father to my siblings and I. His care, generosity and kindness was immeasurable. 
Daddy, you were unique both professionally and academically. You played a great role in the Kufeji family. We have lost a legend!!
Daddy, we will miss you and will never forget you.
Rest in peace.

Good night Baba, i always look at you in life as a helper, kind hearted, gentle and a humble achiever. Standing by to watch the way my examiners were at it with me in LUTH during my trying hours facing my long case, is a picture that cannot erase in my memory. The success i had in that exam automatically bound you to my heart forever( even though no direct input). Your presence gave me confidence and brought out the best in me. You carry yourself as a father free of any intimidation. You will be remembered forever for your contributions to medical education in Nigeria. Rest well in the bossom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I was so sad to hear about Dr's passing. He had been my doctor for a good portion of my life, from primary school until I left Nigeria. He was my entire family's doctor. When I was sick, he had the most calming and reassuring demeanor. I always felt better after he would see and treat me. The last time I saw him was when I came home some years ago, and I stopped by his clinic to see him and say hello. We talked and he cracked some jokes. He was a great man and will be missed. Rest in Peace Dr. Kufeji. Yours was a life well-lived.

TRIBUTE TO "OUR BROTHER "

Sir (Dr) L.I.D. Kufeji was our in-law and we affectionately called him "My brother".
He was a cool, calm, collected and grateful man. From the very first day that he visited us in 2002, he showed what a friendly and responsible man he was.
He demonstrated how loving he was when Tayo and Folake's first child- Olubanke stayed with us by visiting regularly and always bringing her favourite cereal then - Quaker Oats and Peak Milk.
He was committed to the Oyewumi family by attending and participating fully in all events celebrated, be it weddings, birthdays and burials of members of the family.
A particular one in reference was the burial of late Capt. Oyewumi's senior brother at our home town in Erin-Osun, Osun State where he accompanied us and spent three days. I can still remember him getting up early in the morning to help in arrangement of chairs under the canopies for guests before the church service. When we objected, his answer was that, this was what in-laws were supposed to do - what an act of humility!
He was a loving father and not father-in law to our daughter. He gave her no hassle whatsoever - just peace in her marriage!
He was a very devout Christian who served his God dutifully. Wherever he went, he would always look for a Catholic Church to worship no matter what.

"Grandpa K" we will miss you sorely, but we are consoled by the fact that you are resting peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty God!

I got to know Dr Kufeji as a close friend of my maternal uncle , one of the first set of the College of Medicine and a surgeon, Dr Adeoye Oladipo.
He attended my Uncle’ s funeral 13 years ago in Omu Aran Kwara state . He stayed back playing the role of a faithful friend.
Since he knew I was Adeoye Oladipo ‘s nephew , he adopted me . He always looked out for me at various faculty or College functions.
I saw him as loyal and faithful.
My prayer is that the Lord will comfort his family and continue to make his memory to be sweet , amen

GOODNIGHT MY OGA, DR. L. I. D. KUFEJI, FMCS, PNMC, DFMC, FNAMed.

My Oga, I find it difficult to accept that we shall not see you again in this world. Although you looked frail when last I saw you in Lagos attending the meeting of the Past Presidents’ Forum of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), I was hoping you would bounce back to your usual genial self. I became uneasy when I called your daughter to speak with you about 4 weeks to your exit and you simply greeted me on phone without cracking any of your usual jokes with me. I was afraid that it might be getting nearer the time to say FAREWELL!

Dr. Kufeji was a real gentleman by the very meaning of the word. While insisting on what is right, he would never utter an unkind word that might hurt anybody’s ego. As a meticulous Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, he always ensured precision in all he did. He was always ready to contribute his own quota for the general good of the society without any personal aggrandizement. Within the Faculty of Surgery, he did not put himself up for any elective position but he just continued working hard as Faculty Lecture Convener for years.

As the Faculty Secretary, I led a delegation that included Dr. Wahab Yinusa and Dr. Jibola Jeje to meet him in his Clinic to convince him to contest for the position of Surgical Faculty Chairman that was about to be vacant. He told us that he did not think about it but accepted gladly. As the Faculty Secretary at the time, I can attest to the fact that he performed excellently well. He brought about a good number of innovations and his sagacity made him a Star within the Governing Board. He was loved by most members of the Board that at the completion of the Rotational Presidency in NPMCN, he was the undisputed choice to start the second round of the Rotational Presidency. Quietly pursing his ideas, he ensured that during his College Presidency, the Fellows Register was published, the History of the College was published and all activities went as scheduled. I really loved working with him because he was so dedicated that he gave me all the support that I needed when I succeeded him as Chairman of the Faculty of Surgery. Under his Presidency, we were able to create the Faculty of Orthopaedics from our Faculty after 10 years of the matter being on the drawing Board.

I had thought that my charismatic ‘OGA’ would live long to take his rightful position as a certified Foundation Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine (NAMed) which was conceived while he was Chairman of Past Presidents’ Forum. As Secretary, Nigerian Academy of Medicine, his untimely death has robbed me of his contributions. I am however consoled that he has left indelible footprints in the sands of time. Goodnight, Sir Dr. Kufeji. Rest in peace in the bosom of the Lord that made you. May the Almighty God bless the Family you left behind.

This tribute is to my friend and professional colleague, Dr Leonard ldowu Dovi Kufeji.
l first met Dovi in the sixties, in 1964, at St Gregory's College when l went for the Higher School Course in Science. We became friebds instantly because of his high sense of humour. He was fond of cracking funny jokes and would keep a straight face while everybody around him is roaring with laughter.
After College, we both went in different directions to study medicine and re-united at Lagos University Teaching Hospital for our Pre Registration House job. On the completion of House Job we parted again for Post Graduate Training in Surgery. Despite the frequent separation, our friendship remained intact and Dovi never changed, still jovial as usual.
Dovi is a great friend who values relationships and little wonder that we've been friends for over 60years.
Dovi was a hardworking and dedicated doctor and excelled in his chosen field of Surgery. He was a teacher and administrator as attested to by his students and colleagues. He was very religious and was a great family man.
Its a pity Dovi left us a bit early but God loves him more.
Dovi, may you find perfect peace in the blossom of your Creator, great joy in your re-union with Lapo.

We are highly elated at this recorded joyful history that our passing Brother, Dr. Leonard Idols Dovi KUFEJI, KSM, KSGG enjoyed the infinite grace of the Almighty God by sojourning on this plane for 76 years – the period in which he lived a happy prosperous and successful Christian life. May he continue to enjoy the mercy of God as he enters his home in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

The glorious attributes which our Brother, Dr. L.I.D. Kufeji, amassed from his spiritual endeavours were elaborately utilized in building his home and family as well as extolling the lives of the societies in which he found himself – the Youngmen Relief Society hereby attest to these facts. Our late Brother is highly endowed in wisdom, firmness and details. His moral and financial forthrightness immensely contributed to shaping policies and practices that rightly aligns the future direction of our Society.

The pang of death is not unexpected but the time! We join your family to thank God for his life of fulfilment and now his being called to eternal rest. Our dear Worthy Bro Dr. Kufeji has gone to rest with God, his Creator.

The entire membership of Youngmen Relief Society and the Ladies wing once again express our profound condolences to the siblings, friends and other relations on the irreparable loss of the life of Brother, Dr. L I D Kufeji. 

We also humbly beseech the Omnipotent God to spare the lives of all the surviving children, grand and great grandchildren and that you may live long, prosperous and peaceful life like your passing father in Jesus name. Amen.

I have so many good memories with him that I will cherish forever. In the seventies he was "Uncle Doctor" as we called him. He was one uncle we all loved to have around. I recall the few times he took my brother and I to makoko.
Later we called him "Baba Mowunmi" He was pleasant to be with. You always did what ever you wanted with passion once you were convinced it was right.
One of the things I did inculcate from him was from his medical practice. I asked him once why his practice was in Mushin area and not in exclusive areas of Lagos. His reply was simple "The poor and the lowly in the society needed access to good health care and that was his calling" I won't forget that and I still hold on to this in my practice. I did visit him a few times in Lagos but for me and for many people but I feel I could have visited  him more often but I just felt you'd always be there. You will be much missed. You've done your bit and made your mark.

My Worthy Brother,LID Kufeji, I made efforts to see or even to speak to you again before your departure to your Creator but all failed.
You were a true physician to the poor and widows. Despite your açlaimed position in the society, you were extremely humble.
Your were my good friend and consultant. You sponsored me into our Honoured Order of the Knight Saint Mulumba, Nigeria. Thank you.

I was your daughter, Mimi’s roommate at Medical School. You were so kind, caring and always encouraging. When you visited her then, you brought goodies enough to go round her room mates. You opened your doors of hospitality to your children’s friends. We had so many joyous moments celebrating their birthdays in your home. As a most senior, fatherly colleague we looked up to your diligence, passion and dedication to the noble profession of medicine. Daddy, you left your giant footprints on the sands of time. Rest in the bosom of the Lord and may He comfort your entire family.

He had made immense contributions to medicine and Nigeria, aside his many other outstanding tasks. I shall miss this long time teacher - A man of vision, action, insight and bravity, and a great profound professionalism in medicine

I have known Dr Kufeji since 1965 when we got into medical school.
In this tribute I will list out his qualities that struck me

1.his love for God,he demonstrated this in the way he treated people with love , empathy, humility and service

2. Love for his family, he had his family uppermost in his mind at all times , and you could see the love with his late wife Lapo and together they raise Omowunmi Tayo and Dapo. Who have raised their families in Similar fashion

3. A brilliant scholar, Dovi thoroughly demonstrated an astute and brilliant mind
ending with distinction in surgery, he will go on to sub Specialise in cardio thoracic surgery

4. Service to human kind , He demonstrated it in the way he practised the profession, he choose to practise medicine in mushin because as he told me that is the place where he is most needed. This earned him the name "BABA OLOMO WEWE"

5. Loyalty to friends and relations, Dovi will stand by you no matter the situation you are in , but this does not rule out his criticism which he will give with love and boldness.

6. He was the excellent and complete team player, this was demonstrated very well in the faculty of surgery of the NATIONAL POST GRADUATE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF NIGERIA and later as the president of the college, as well as in general Practice

7. The Quintenssential leader, he showed this effectively in all the areas he was involved in the lions club, the church,the professional and academic area as well as the estate where he lived

We shall all miss him, but we know he has gone to meet with his LORD AND MAKER

The Congregation of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, the Board, Management and Staff of Ancilla Catholic Hospital Iju and Ifako Agege Lagos wish to express our condolences to the Kufeji family over the death of your father Dr Leonard Idowu Dovi Kufeji.
He was the pioneer Chairman of Ancilla Catholic Hospital Advisory Board. He was so committed to the progress of the hospital that even during his failing health in Benin he kept asking about events and progress of the then ongoing building construction in the hospital.

The News of the sudden demise of our revered Dr. Leonard Idowu Dovi Kufeji, MBBS, FMCS, PNMC, DFMC, FWACS, KSM, KSG, one of our most distinguished Fellow and a meticulous surgeon, was received with shock and grief by the Faculty of Surgery, of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. (NPMCN).

On behalf of the Board of the Faculty of Surgery, I wish to commiserate with all members of the Family as the demise of our past Chairman is also a great loss to all of us in Faculty of Surgery because he was an outstanding scholar, a great administrator and an astute manager of men and materials.

While accepting this inevitable end to all mortals, we give gratitude to God for a life well spent in selfless service to humanity. We also take solace in the fact that he left behind a legacy as our longest serving Faculty Lecture convener, a diligent Examiner in all tiers of examination, a respectable Past Chairman, and the Faculty’s flag bearer as the first Fellow by examination to be College President. His tenure witnessed innumerable achievements including the creation of the Faculty of Orthopaedic Surgery from his own Faculty.

We pray that the good Lord will grant his soul eternal rest and grant the nuclear family and his surgical family the fortitude to bear this irrevocable loss.

On behalf of the Past Presidents of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, of which Forum the Late Sir (Dr) L.I.D. Kufeji was a member, I hereby register our deep sorrow and sympathy with the family.

Sir (Dr) L.I.D. Kufeji was a well respected Foundation Fellow of our College in the Faculty of Surgery, for which he served as Faculty Chairman, Trainer and Examiner for many years. He was a mentor to numerous resident doctors both within and outside Surgery discipline, many of who benefited immensely from his wealth of academic knowledge.

He became the Vice President of the College from January 2008 to December 2009 and subsequently elected to serve as the College President from January 2010 to December 2011. He was conferred with the Distinguished Fellowship (DFMC) award for meritorious service to the College.

Sir (Dr) L.I.D. Kufeji will be fondly remembered for his immense contributions to the growth of our College and Postgraduate Medical Education in Nigeria.
May God almighty give the entire family and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

A Tribute To My Dear Uncle,

I remember my first memories of my dear uncle- if memory serves me correctly you lived in Adebisi Street, Surulere and we came round to your place in the holidays to spend time with our cousins- Mowunmi, Tayo and Dapo. This was the late seventies/early eighties and those were really good times.

You used to drive an Opel Rekord and played some really cool music whenever you took us out in your car. You had curly hair and with your dance moves at the 1st January Yaba parties you lit up the stage.

Also, with your practical jokes and sense of humour, you made us laugh a lot. It was evident also that you had great knowledge as you also left us nuggets of wisdom. You had a deep font of knowledge as well as humour- a winning combination.

You were our really cool uncle and very special to us... In our hearts you still are as you still live in our hearts.

You have left a great void in the family that can never be filled. We all miss you dearly, but God knows best. Your passing has made me really reflect on the legacy you have left- a great dad and family man, I look at your successful children- Mowunmi, Tayo and Dapo and you bringing them up singlehandedly for some periods.

Now being a dad myself, I have come to respect even more the hard work, knowledge, perseverance and resilience you had.

Also looking at these tributes both professional and personal, it has reinforced what a special uncle we had and what a special person we have all lost.

Once again; Mowunmi, Tayo and Dapo and family, please accept my deepest condolences- You have lost a great father, we have lost a great uncle, and collectively we have all lost a great inspiration, but God in his infinite wisdom knows best and God will give you strength to bear this loss.

Rest in Peace my Dear Uncle and sleep peacefully in the bosom of the creator.

Sir (Dr.) Leonard Dovi Idowu Kufeji bid no one farewell, he was gone before we knew it. How has the mighty fallen?
We believe since death is an indispensable prelude to immortality, he has completed his divine ordained task here on earth and has been liberated into the glory of God in his everlasting kingdom. Praise God! Halleluyah.
Looking back at his lifetime, one would say that Sir (Dr.) Leonard Dovi Idowu Kufeji had an excellent and very fulfilled life. He was blessed by God in multiple aspects, with long, happy, prosperous life with children and grandchildren.
Professionally, he was an academic, intellectual icon, an accomplished surgeon, a fine gentleman of our time and he has been used by God as an instrument to bless many people. He was a living testimony of God’s grace, love, goodness and mercy.
Within the Kufeji/Akinosho family, he established himself as a dependable pillar to reckon with, a worthy son and an ambassador of the illustrious Kufeji/Akinosho family of Federal Republic of Nigeria and Kufedji and Akincho family of Republic Du Benin. Sir (Dr.) Kufeji’s goodness to humanity and reference to God coupled with his services in God’s Vineyard endeared the Roman Catholic Church to honour him with knighthood titles of knight of St. Mulumba and knight of St. Gregory and coincidentally he was a product of Saint Gregory’s college, Lagos.
We join voices with other members of the Kufeji/Akinosho families in the Federation of Nigeria and in Republic Du Benin to bid him farewell.
We extend our deeply felt condolences to his children Omowunmi, Tayo and Dapo, his siblings, Mr. Damion Kehinde Kufeji (brother) and Mrs. Cosma Taiwo Williams (sister) and the Grandchildren.
We pray that the Almighty God will comfort them and grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

You understood and realised at an early age that mundane materials were temporary and rubbish and now you went away with nothing.
God be praised for you are blessed with kind and benevolent three children who cared for you when your illness started. May God reward them abundantly.

Tribute to our Father / Family Doctor and Counselor
We do not know where we can get such a caring Father,Family Doctor and Counselor from. The passing unto glory of our Father came as a shock to the whole family.
Dr LID Kufeji was there for the family during our travails and his fatherly advice was incomparable. As our family physician ,his referral letters were given prompt attention when tendered. Infact he was Doctor of the People.
Only God Almighty will reward him for his Financial and Moral Contributions to the Board of Church Warden.

TRIBUTE TO DR. IDOWU.L.KUFEJI
    Our relationship started dates back to 35 years. He was my senior colleague and family friend. A surgeon by excellence in his field. He was the chairman at my wedding in 1989 and my daughter’s wedding in 2015. A consultant surgeon for my hospital for years till he retired two years ago due to health challenges. It is sad we have to say goodbye to him, he would be dearly missed. He was the one who invited me to the lion’s club in 1989, a prestigious club in which I am still a member of till date. He was a very amiable person, seeked for counselling, wisdom and support. A very close and good friend for years. I asked about his health when he was at Benin, he said he was fine and recovering, never knew it would come down to this. Dr. Kufeji, one of the best specialist Surgeon this nation has ever produced, very hardworking, dedicated to his duty as a surgeon. He has saved thousands of lives through his work, he has given his best to humanity. His legacy will forever be remembered.
  He was a role model to some of us in the medical field, he sometimes operated freely to help the community, he also built a foundation named SILK foundation which was coined from his name SIR IDOWU LEONARD KUFEJI. We at Fafolu medical center are grateful for the 35yrs of help and support he has given to us. What a big loss, but only God knows best. May the lord protect the rest of his family. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

I knew Dr Dovi Kufeji in 1986 when I transferred my membership of Lions Club to ILUPEJU LIONS CLUB from AJAOKUTA LIONS CLUB. It was his amiable disposition that instantly prompted me to start patronising him as our family doctor.
He sincerely served humanity as a Lion club member and as doctor very caring. May God grant his soul perfect peace. Amen

May God give Omowunmi, Tayo and Dapo the strength to bear this loss. May God continue to guide their steps and grant them peace.

Uncle, rest in peace.

You inspired me to study medicine. Your devotion to your patients, calm demeanour, cordial interaction was always reassuring when my twin brother and I are afflicted with one ailment or another in childhood in Lagos. We dreaded those injections, though. We will cry all the way to the clinic because we knew a ‘sore bum’ was coming. I am blessed to have met you, been treated by you and followed in your wake as a general practitioner. We will miss you but we know you are in a better place. Rest In Peace, My Mentor.

The board of Church Warden, St. Cyprian' s Catholic Church Oko Oba Agege, commiserate with the family of our pioneer Chairman Dr LID Kufeji of the Board of Church Warden.While he was with us he taught us the good tenets of Life; Punctuality to duty post, Honesty, Charity and Contentment with what you have.
These exemplary qualities our father and late Chairman also exhibited. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace- Amen.

TRIBUTE to Dr Leonard Idowu Dovi Kufeji, FMCS, PMCN, DFMC, FNAMed.
Dovi and I became very close friends while at the College of Medicine University of Lagos/ LUTH in the late 60s and 70s. Over the years our friendship and respect for one another waxed stronger. Dr Dovi Kufeji proved himself a very good and loyal friend.
Although our professional lives differed in that Dovi went into private practice to assist the weak and the poor and I remained in academia at UNILAG, we were supportive of each other’s endeavours and achievements. Dovi was extremely humorous with his characteristic baritone voice and deep, prolonged but soft laughter.

His calmness is one of the things I remember about him, I recall as young doctors we had to attend wedding ceremony of a common friend at Osogbo. We decided to drive down in my Volkswagen beetle 1300. I was behind the steering at a speed of about 140km/hour when on a narrow road close to Osogbo, another oncoming vehicle lost control and headed towards our vehicle. Dovi and I miraculously escaped the head-on collision (God moves in mysterious ways!). It was remarkable that Dovi was very unperturbed and unruffled, in his very gentle voice, I just heard ‘Akọgun rọ ra o'. We both smiled and thanked God for saving us from unknown danger.

As a professional, he was a hard working and excellent doctor/surgeon. As a man of faith he was a devout Catholic knight and as a man he was a loyal, straightforward and very honest, yes... an amazing friend.

A tribute to a dear Uncle,
No words can capture the essence of my heart but I will simply say “Uncle is forever special”.

I recall, all the incredibly great memories from the 70/80s - you made us laugh, the practical jokes, sense of humour - with all the fantastic dance steps in the Yaba parties (Ist of Jan). Your rendition of the "MJ Newspaper" dance was my favourite, Aunty [Mowunmi’s mum] and all of us [the grandchildren] roared in laughter, when you took to the dance floor…

As time passed, it was evident that you were also a rock in the family. Uncle was incredibly open, honest, smart with a wealth of advice - the family looked up to him.
A great professional - yet Humble, Great Dad and family man, in every sense of the word and indeed a true Kufeji, who made exceedingly good cakes too!

Oh Uncle, you have left a void in the family that can never be filled. We are entirely grateful and treasure having you in our lives - the legacy, special memories, too many to mention...
God saw you were getting tired and called you to rest. We did not expect this now but God in his infinite wisdom knows best.
We know you are in the arms of your creator and that you are looking out for Mowunmi, Tayo, Dapo and your entirely family.

Oh what a huge void in our lives!

LID Kufeji was a compassionate Teacher of medical students.
When we were medical students in LUTH-during our Intermediate posting in surgery in 1976, if there was a case for emergency surgery, Dr Kufeji will put a call across to the Porter’s lodge asking to speak to any Medical student around and he will ask the student to call the 4th year students in Surgery to meet him in theater immediately.
He was a fine surgeon and soft spoken.
May his gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Lord, and may God grant those he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss.

My very dear friend Dovi.
Dovi and I met and became friends.He remained a very good friend with honesty, integrity, dedicated and very reliable.
Dovi lived a life of service and love to humanity.His good deeds leads him on.Rest in the bossom of the Lord while the Lord take good care of your caring children.
I am missing you and you will always be forever in my heart.
Eternal peace till we meet again at the Father's feet.
