김연재 목사님은 1936년 3월 5일에 부친 김동식과 모친 정영덕의 1남 2녀 중 장남으로 태어났습니다. 땅끝마을 해남에서 어린 시절을 보내던 중 일찌기 아버지를 여의고 홀어머니 밑에서 자랐습니다. 경제적으로 어려웠기 때문에 고등학교를 다닐때부터 가정교사로 일을 하면서 학업을 병행했습니다. 마을 서당 선생님이었던 아버지의 영향을 받아 국민학교 입학하기 전에 천자문을 다 떼고 4학년으로 월반을 할 정도로 공부에 열중했고 광주고등학교시절에는 독일 철학과 신학자의 책들을 원서로 읽을정도로 문학과 철학에 심취했습니다.

신학에 대한 관심은 결국 당시 학교 선생님들의 의대진학 권유를 뿌리치고 한국신학대학에 입하하게 된 동기가 되었습니다. 한신대와 신학대학원, 그리고 연세대학원을 졸업하고 문익환 목사님 지도하에 목회를 시작했습니다. 통역장교로 군생활을 마쳤고  1971년에 한국 기독교 장로회 경기노회에서 목사안수를 받은 후 미국 펜실베니아 알렌타운, 메인주 뱅골 신학교에서 유학생활을 했습니다. 유학을 마치고 돌아오자마자 목포남부교회로부터 청빙을 받아 첫 담임목사로 사역을 시작했습니다.

목회를 시작하면서 40일 금식기도를 하는 중에 경험했던 성령체험은 성령중심의 목회로 방향을 전환하게 된 계기가 되었습니다. 그 후 광주 무돌교회, 캐나다 에드먼튼 한인 장로교회, 광주 아름다운 교회를 거쳐 마지막으로 개척한 캐나다 에드먼튼 안디옥교회에서 보람된 사역을 마치고 은퇴를 하였습니다. 늘 말씀과 기도 중심의 목회를 하면서 부흥을 체험했고 수 많은 성도들에게 목회자로서 최선을 다했습니다.가장 가까운 곳에서 지켜본 가족들의 존경과 사랑을 듬뿍 받았던 참 목회자였습니다.

50여년을 사랑하는 배우자로 기도의 동역자로 함께 삶을 나눴던 아내 김경숙 사모님과 함께 하나님께서 주신3남 1녀를 믿음안에서 훌륭하게 양육했습니다. 큰 아들 김진혁 목사는 아내 배상민 목사, 세 딸 조이, 제인, 주빌리와 함께 캐나다 밴쿠버 인근에 있는 캐나다 장로교회의 담임목사로 캐나다인 목회를 하고 있고 둘째 아들 김진석 집사는 아내 윤은지와, 외동딸 한나와 함께 신앙생활을 하면서 한국 대전에 있는 치과병원 원장으로 일하고 있습니다. 피아노 전공을 한 세째인 딸 김진아 집사는 남편인 연세대 교수인 전용관 안수집사와 두 아들, 데이비드, 다니엘과 함께 열심히 교회 봉사를 하고 있고 캐나다 캘거리에 살고있는 막내아들인 김요셉 장로는 감염내과 전문의로서 같은 의사인 아내 질리안과  두 딸 아비가일, 미카일라와 같이 주님의 일을 열심히 하고 있습니다.

김연재 목사님은 김경숙 사모님의 헌신적인 사랑으로 자녀들이 다 믿음생활을 잘 하고 있어서 정말 감사하다고 자주 말하곤 했습니다. 하늘나라에 가시기전 마지막 말씀도 “믿음이 제일 중요하다. 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑해라” 였습니다. “나는 주님앞에 그저 한송이 꽃이 되고 싶다. 그것으로 나는 만족한다” 라는 고백을 통해서 자녀들을 축복하였습니다.

이제 가족과 성도들은 김연재 목사님이 베푸신 사랑과 축복을 기억하고 남기신 믿음의 유산을 고이 간직하면서 생활 할 것입니다. 목사님 가족의 가훈인 데살로니가 전서 5장 16-18 말씀을 나눕니다. “ 항상 기뻐하라. 쉬지말고 기도하라. 범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라”

The Reverend Yon Jae Kim was born in Haenam, South Korea on March 5, 1936 to his father Dong Shik Kim and mother Young Duk Jung. He was the first born son with two younger sisters. Shaped by his father, who was a school teacher, he showed outstanding intellectual abilities early and excelled in school. In his high school years, the Rev. Kim was deeply into German philosophers and theologians, even reading their original manuscripts. Having lost his father at a young age, he was raised by his mother. There were economic hardships and he worked as a tutor while attending high school.

Despite the urging of his teachers who suggested that he pursue Medicine, he enrolled at the Korean Theological University to further deepen his passion for Theology. He obtained a Masters of Divinity at the same school and a Masters of Theology at Yonsei University. After graduating, he became an associate pastor under the tutelage of the Rev. Ik Hwan Moon. He then completed his military training as a military officer. After he was ordained as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church of Korea in 1971, he pursued further education at the Bangor Seminary in Maine, U.S. After his return to Korea, he was called to Namboo Church in Mokpo to become their lead pastor.

As he began his ministry, he experienced the power of the Holy Spirit during his 40-day fast. That experience shaped the direction of his ministry at various churches including Moodol Church in Kwangju, Korean Presbyterian Church in Edmonton, Beautiful Church in Kwangju and finally Antioch Church in Edmonton before his retirement. He was a faithful minister of the Word and a beloved pastor to many congregants. He was deeply respected and loved by his family and those close to him.

He is survived by his faithful partner and wife of 50 years Kyoung Sook Kim and their 3 sons and 1 daughter. The eldest son Jin Hyuk (wife Lydia, daughters Joy, Jane, Jubilee) is also a pastor in the Presbyterian Church in Canada serving in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Jin Suk (wife Eun Ji, daughter Hannah) is a dentist in Daejun, Korea. His only daughter Jina, a pianist, resides in Seoul, Korea (husband Yong Kwan Jeon, sons David, Daniel). The youngest son Joseph works as a physician in Calgary, Alberta (wife Gilian, daughters Abigail and Mikayla). All of his children and grandchildren are the fruit of their upbringing and now serve the Lord faithfully.

Often the Rev. Kim and his wife would express their gratitude at how their children are living a life of faith. Before passing, his last words of blessing were “faith in Jesus is the most important, love the Lord and love your neighbours.. I just want to be a flower for the Lord… and now I am satisfied.”

For the rest of us, we will remember his love and blessing for us. We will cherish the great inheritance of faith and live accordingly. In closing, we would like to share a Scripture passage that is our family motto:
