Well old friend, thinking of you today but in fact not many days pass without that happening. Special, is not an adequate way to talk about you and your music but one thing is clear. I have never known anyone quite like you. Your talent to generate beautiful lyrics with simple but glorious melodies to carry them such a rare gift. My thanks to you for allowing me to share just a little writing with you.

Happy heavenly birthday Dad x I took the kids up to Rothbury this week, we walked up to where your ashes are scattered. I’d forgotten how beautiful it was. We were thinking and talking about you and a rainbow appeared. I hope my kids will visit Rothbury when I’m long gone, and their kids, and their kids and so on. Such a beautiful place. Your legacy lives on. Lots of love x x

Hey up old son. I have often said that you are never far from my thoughts and it is as true to day as it ever was. In fact I am rehearsing for my first ever one man show: Past Imperfect -- The Journey Between the Songs. I'll be chatting about my life on the road, singing some songs, mine and some by other writers, meeting you and hearing your wonderful songs for the first time all those years ago (1975) in Sherburn-in-Elmet, I'm including Was it You and The Power: that incredible 'video-like' lyric you gave me to write a tune for. That song has carried me many a mile and I hope a good few more. Sleep on mate, all of us who write here, carry our memories of you in our hearts for sure.

A belated happy birthday to Ewen Carruthers. I heard someone sing 'Was It You' a few years and then found a Youtube clip of Ewen singing it at Morley Folk Club. I worked up my own take of it based on his DADGBD version, which I now perform solo and with the trio White Sail. I'm learning some more of Ewen's songs at the moment and look forward to doing them. Such a beautiful voice and guitar, and such wonderful songs. Thank you for the gifts, Ewen xx

I guess we all have things that we say a lot or questions we ask etc. One of mine is, have you heard any songs by Ewen Caruthers? After all these years, I still find myself asking the same question. Ewen, your songs were written with such simple and articulate beauty, they surprise me and inspire me always.
